Moral Values Essay
In Sports Ethics: Application for Fair Play, Lumpkin, Stoll, and Beller (2003) discusses character values that exist and are evident in sports. Of these character values, four universal moral values are identified that play a role in our lives including justice, honesty, responsibility, and beneficence. Lumpkin, Stoll, and Beller (2003) consider these as universal values because as they argue, “If we examine certain general, historical, and cultural parameters that can be found in the Bible, the Pali Cannon, the Book of Koran, and most societal ethics, we find some explicit, simple, common, and shared values.”

Lay up Video Analysis
Stage: Beginner
Stage Characteristics: Student is dribbling the ball with the correct. She is jumping off the right foot but is lacking the correct shooting technique when she releases the basketball.
What to improve/change: Slow the process down by starting closer to the hoop to insure proper footwork and emphasis on shooting the ball with her left hand not two hands. This will also help her keeping her eyes on the hoop instead of the ball.
Cue: Pull the string/ Puppet arm & leg
Throw-Catch
This is a short clip that shows a young lady throwing and catching a football. As you can see from the video, there are several things that she does well. She steps straight to her target, has a good follow through with throwing hand, and creates a good "L" shape with the throwing arm when bringing it back. There are a few things though that she could work on that would improve her balance, accuracy, and distance on throws.

10,000 Steps: Healthy or Hearsay?
Lately, I have been seeing the number 10,000 come up more and more in relation to how many steps healthy adults should be getting every day. I did a little research to determine whether this number is just an arbitrary recommendation or a significant value, and eventually decided to get a pedometer of my own. Read more »

the Science behind a baseball swing and of a Cricket.
The diference between thet two swings is that in baseball you want to keep hands together because you dont to use your elbow when batting inm baseball. In cricket the key is to have your elbow high because you use the elbow more in cricket. it is easier to hit a cricket ball and the key to that is to take your eye off the ball.

Great Treadmill for Under $1000
This review is for the NordicTrack ZS Commercial folding treadmill. I bought the treadmill from Costco 2 years ago for $899.99. It has since been replaced in their lineup with the Reebok T 12.80 Folding Treadmill, also, for $899.99. As far as I can tell, besides the name and color, there is absolutely no difference between the two. They are manufactured by the same company (Icon Health & Fitness) and have the same description, technical details, and parts including display (Icon Health and Fitness, 2010).

Jump shot grading rubric
To develop this grading rubric I looked at the critical features of a jump-shot, provided by Knudson (1993), and used those as the key items to assess when grading the skill. The rubric is split in to the different phases of the movement, preparatory, execution, and follow through and includes several teaching cues that can be used when instructing on the skill. The table/ rubric that I built does not copy in to the document super well, so I have listed out the information instead.

Critical Feature- Staggered stance/ vertical jump
Coaching Cue- Line up shooting side

Vibram five finger shoes
I recently finished reading Christopher McDougal's book Born to Run. In it, the author explains that he kept getting injuries from running, and wanted to find out why. His quest led him to study some of the best long distance runners in the world from a remote tribe in Mexico who run hundred mile races through the desert in nothing but sandals or barefeet. The book is a great read. It made me examine the reasons I run, and I am considering trying out barefoot running or the vibram five finger shoes. The video is a reporter from Park City who is trying out the vibram five finger shoes. Has anyone ever tried these? Pros or cons?

Current Topic #2: Do NBA refs give stars better treatment?
I couldn't decided if I wanted to do a current topic on corrupt NBA officials or one that dealt with preferential star treatment. Since the Tim Donaghy scandal happened a while ago I decided on the latter. Anyone who has watched NBA basketball knows that the superstars of the league always seem to have the calls go their way. I remember watching old Bulls games and yelling at the screen every time Jordan got away with a travel, a charge, or an over the back call. It seemed that the referees were afraid to call anything on him. As the years went on I noticed others getting the same treatment. It seemed that anyone who had their own shoe, their own commercial, or their own string of All-Star appearances had an official in their pocket. Read more »

Wii Fit Plus Review
I find the Wii fit to be extremely helpful in getting in the workouts I need since I am a new mom. I have two children under two and have to make myself wake up early to use this, or my toddler likes to jump on the balance board with me. I think this is an excellent invention for childhood obesity problems, because it gets kids up and playing rather than just sitting inside all day. Especially in Oregon where time outside is limited. I also have found that nap time is a good time for me to jump on the wii fit board and get in 10-20 minutes of exercises. If you have not seen it in action, it is really cool and worth checking out. I highly recommend it.
Body composition
I must say, in some cases I am very much a girl. Perhaps human is a better word. Up until now when lectures have been talking about body composition and assessments I have been absolutely fine sitting as far away from the front of the class as possible, letting other student be the ones in 'the warm chair', the teachers' ginny pigs. But today, I knew I could not get around it. 'Bring tight clothes' the email said, and with that I went to Scotland on Saturday to attend two courses (master in obesity management) from Robert Gordon University in Scotland, knowing that I was going out for an adventure to know my own body better. After watching it I am very excited about this major but I know it will take a lot of hard work to get there.
Unit plan for basketball
Here is a unit plan that I created. Its a 12 day unit. Classes are scheduled Monday, Wendsday and Friday. So the unit will last 4 weeks. I created lesson plans for all the days that new skills are introduced. For the other days of the class I could re-use the lesson plans with slight adjustments. The final day of the class will be a test day. Written test, conditioning test and skill test.
I used this book for most of the drills and fundamentals.

Offensive Drive Block Rubric - Sport Skill Grading Rubric
I made a rubric which would allow a coach to break down a drive block to evaluate an athlete. The skill is more advanced and requires a high skill level. This could be used in late high school or college athletics. Let me know what you think. I look forward to the feedback.
P.S. The grading scale is on a scale from 5 to 15. 5-8= needs improvement. 9-12= Solid fundamentals but slight adjustment 13-15= Outstanding fundaments and great understanding of the skill.

Bikram Yoga
My main form of exercise has been participation in the practice of Bikram Yoga , also known as “Hot Yoga”. Bikram Yoga is a series of yoga poses done in a deliberately over-heated area, you will sweat profusely during its practice, eliminating toxins and cleansing the body. Bikram yoga requires the room temperature to be between 95 and 105 degrees Fahrenheit. The theory is that the higher temperatures will help the muscles to loosen more quickly.
There are many benefits of Bikram Yoga to include the following:
Tones, strengthens and lengthens your muscles
Improves circulation
Reduces risk of sports injury
Reduces your weight – Lose pounds by balance your metabolism Read more »

The Great Stretching Debate
I was out on a walk recently with my friend who happens to be a pre-physical therapy student and she was telling me about a conversation her Anatomy class had had earlier that day. What it basically came down to is that the theory many of us have learned from very early on that performing slow sustained stretching before physical activity is the best way to warm-up our muscles and avoid injury is not necessarily true. I did a little research into the topic and found more and more experts agree that athletes reap more benefits from slow sustained stretching after workouts, rather than before. Read more »
Combining TRX With Yoga
After reviewing the TRX workout program and after discussing the flexibilty component in class, I did some research and found a workout that combines both TRX and yoga. This video displays a few yoga stretches that can easily be done on the TRX. This workout can be very useful to the stretching component of the workout log. Combining the TRX with Yoga would also be much more efficent and less time consuming so you could easily transfer from a muscle workout to stretching workouts. I think this video does a fairly decent job of demonstrating the multiple variations one could accomplish with a TRX suspension system.
Bowflex Hybrid Plus Heart Rate Monitor Review
When starting this class I noticed the importance of monitoring your heart rate during cardio workouts. I jog, for my main cardio activity, and found that stopping and trying to take a heart rate manually by counting my pulse caused unwanted down time. It would even get me off my rhythm. By the time I got my rhythm back it was time to stop and take a measurement again. This is probably due to the fact that I have never taken my HR while working out and decided to spend a little money for convenience and more productive workouts. Read more »
5 Best Kettlebell Ab Exercises
i was doing some research to an alternative to crunches and abdominal workouts. It is presented on the fitness that we must complete an ab workout to successfully pass the fit test. What i found from my own experience and research is kettlebells with the right workouts can contribute to a great increase in abdominal strength as well as a whole body strength you never isolate one muscle group all muscles are being used but maybe the focus is on a certain muscle group and they are getting the most work. The reason why i bring up kettlebells is if one can increase overall adominals strength from this excercise moving to a crunch test will be a walk in the park just another tool for preparation, i believe in over prepartion better safe than sorry. If they can - I can, too!
For a long time now I have had a goal. A secret goal. I have wrapped it in plastic, put it in a box and hit it in the corner of my dark closet, where nobody else can see it. Sometimes I forget I keep it there myself. If you asked me any given time of the week, I would probably say, 'People, who run Marathons are crazy! I mean, even half-Marathons are sick. I would never do that to myself or to my body...'. Though, as I am sitting here by myself in my pyjamas on this cold Saturday morning, I dream about my career. I dream of being healthier than the average, more active than the normal. Read more »

How to Bunt a Softball
I have played softball for many years and watched this video and felt it was a good video on showing how to bunt a softball. I myself am left handed so I slap hit and bunt a lot, so i can relate to this video. He also shows how to lay a bunt down on both sides of the plate whether you are left handed or right.
Kicking Drill
I have been training for a triathlon later this month. I have been most nervous about the swim, as it is a 1500 meter open water swim. This is almost double my farthest open water swim to date. In preparation for my race, I did some research on improving my efficiency in the water. I found that I wasn't kicking efficiently causing extreme fatigue in my legs. Not good when you have to follow up your swim with a forty mile bike ride and a 10K run. Here is a kicking drill that I have been doing for about six weeks. It felt very awkward at first, but with practice, I began to feel the 1-2-3 rhythm as I kick, and I have noticed my legs don't feel as "dead" after a long swim. I am planning on doing the 12 minute swim test in lieu of the run Read more »

Proposal Paper: Addition of a Golf Program
A proposal for the addition of the sport of Golf to the Athletic Program at Stone Mountain High School
Submitted by: Eric K. Johnson
Brady Hazen's Proposal: Intramurals
Our school is fortunate enough to have competitive athletics offered to our students. This gives them the opportunity to train hard, play hard, experience the benefits of teamwork, gives them a competitive outlet, and promotes community support. However, not all of our jr. high students (grades 6-8 at our school) desire to participate at the competitive level and/or their interests range outside of the sports we offer. A solution to this problem is to develop an intramurals program. Read more »

Communication
After reading the communication chapter in our book, I am going to try some new communication techniques this season. My weakness as a coach is keeping everyone’s attention during practice. For example; if anyone walks into the gym while I am instructing a new drill, all eyes will shift from me to them. Since we can’t have closed practices at our school, then what can I do to keep their attention on me? Here are five techniques that I will use this season in order to gain their full attention. Exercise Adherence
According to Weinberg and Gould, half of all exercisers drop out of their program within the first 6 months(Weinberg & Gould, 2005). Here at Gilbertson Health we have designed a plan for increasing adherence to our exercise programs. The goal of this exercise plan is to help the individual develop 100% self-efficacy in an ability to stay active for life. In order to achieve our goal, we are going to focus on two specific aspects of our exercise plans. The first change will be to get to know our participants individually so we can develop the right plan for them. Another adjustment will be to establish a youth exercise program in schools and community centers.

Performance Anxiety
PERFORMANCE ANXIETY
Most important in helping athletes to eliminate or reduce performance anxiety is recognizing the signs and symptoms of anxiety and stress. According to the Weinberg and Gould’s Foundations of Sport and Exercise Psychology text, common symptoms include:
- Negative self-talk
- Increased muscle tension
- Inability to concentrate
- Headache
- Dry mouth
- Profuse sweating
- Butterflies
In addition to those listed above, I have personally experienced an increase in heart rate and rate of breathing when stressed. Recognizing these symptoms will help a coach to be aware of when to help an athlete to relax.

Volleyball Practice Observation

Alconbury High School
Coach Susan Payne
Wednesday, August 25, 2010
This is the first practice of the season. School has not started yet. I arrive at 3:25. Four girls are with the coach setting up two nets.
The coach is hoarse and can only speak in a whisper.
The coach supervises and teaches students how to set up the net correctly. She is patient and the students seem motivated. The coach generally does not call a student by name to do something. She gives an instruction and shows how to do it, then moves on and a student steps up to complete the task.
3:40 nine girls are here now. The coach and girls are finishing putting up the nets. Read more »
Practice Observation - Boys Varsity Soccer

The practice that I observed was based upon fitness and conditioning as well as passing and of course ending with game play. This is obviously a well coached team because they begin their warm up as soon as they get onto the field. Everything is done in unison and the warm up is mixed with kinesthetic and static stretching. The boys started off on the track in which they ran their timed mile and a half run. Read more »
Coaching Philosophy

The worksheets prompt coaching students to: identify motivation for becoming a coach, how to put students first, be self-aware of coaching skills, and determine methods to communicate their coaching philosophy. Here are some of the questions/prompts and my responses:
1. Why do you want to be a coach?
I want to be a coach to help students reach their potential in developing their character and athletic skills. It's important for students to have a mentor that cares for their well-being and will encourage them to explore their possibilities and discover what they are capable of completing in and outside athletics. In his responses to the interview (interview attached), he explains his coaching philosophy. I liked how he pointed out how a coach needs to be dynamic in order to adapt to the ever-changing and growing world of scholastic athletics. I think it's also important to note that many of his responses included the cooperation of many--families, coaches, athletic directors, school personnel, etc. It was neat being able to talk about his experience and see the c Read more »
Two totally different practices
I was recently talking to an old teammate about our college softball experience from the coaching perspective. We discussed how our coaches - 2 during our four years were vastly different and for this reason I decided to watch two different practices.
The first practice was a girls fastpitch softball team - 14 and under.
The practice started with the girls coming together, the coaches gave a breakdown of the positive things that took place at the last game and things they needed to work on for the upcoming tournament.
After that, they directed the captains to begin the warm-up activities: light jog and stretch and the girls were so well prepared and directed that they all fell into place like a very well oiled machine. Read more »
A Healthier Option
In today’s world there are many concerns over food production and food safety like; genetically modified crops, pesticides, herbicides, hormones, and recalls of contaminated food.
In an effort to eat healthier I started growing my own fruits and vegetables in my backyard. Initially it was quite overwhelming but it is actually much simpler than it sounds. I started out with the easier vegetables to grow; tomatoes, radishes, peppers and carrots. After I was comfortable growing them I moved on to onions, egg plant, lettuce, spinach, strawberries, and potatoes. Read more »
PE class and health education combined?
After experiencing many PE classes in my past and thinking about how these classes and experiences could have been more beneficial, I was curious about something. It is know that many Physical Education classes do not educate, advise or instruct kids about healthy behaviors that incorporate health, nutrition and wellness principles. I am not saying every PE class is like this, but a majority of PE classes touch briefly on the topics listed about and really revolve around activity (which is great and essential). These activities involve stretching, fundamental games, sport education and fitness tests. These are all great for our youth of today. Read more »

Recommendations from “The Weight Loss Cure”
The author, Kevin Trudeau, advocates that obesity is from an abnormal hypothalamus gland creating a low metabolism. With a low metabolism, a person is unable to burn all the food one consumes during the day. Many factors contribute to an abnormal hypothalamus, such as genetics, clogged colon, food additives, parasites, “yo-yo diets”, growth hormones, lack of sun, eating microwave or genetically modified foods, and many other factors. It is important to reset the abnormal hypothalamus in order to achieve a higher metabolism and loss of weight and can be accomplished in four major phases. While the author is a natural entrepreneur, I highly recommend his website for further discussion and information: Read more »
Risk Management project
The purpose of this project was to provide an assessment for an elementary school the list compiled below is areas used for physical education. These areas also function as play grounds as well, so they are dual purpose areas. There is actual funding for these projects with three individuals assessing the areas myself and two others in order make sure all potential hazards are eliminated.

Inventory
For the inventory assignment I was lucky. I recently got a job as a PE teacher at a charter school. I inventoried the equipment on one of our first pre-service days. So I just took that list, popped it in an Excel file, and posted it on Google Docs. Our school is now going into its third year, so you should notice that most of the equipment is listed as in good or excellent condition. I only listed one set of items as poor, that would be our plastic tubing hockey goals. Who ever purchased these chose ones of very poor quality, and according to some of my students they didn't last long before they broke. That's the balance our book talked about between price and quality (p.127-128). It's a tough line to walk, especially when you have a smal Read more »
Service Learning: Athletic Director
I recently got hired on as a PE teacher at a charter school. However, my school has never had after school sports for their middle schoolers. Thought stopping concentration
Thought stopping concentration
I have started playing golf, well I have played off and on for the last 10 years. But the last two summers I have tried to improve my game and become a better golfer. In the past i didn't care if I shot well or not. My biggest problem is putting. Negative thoughts always jump into my mind. Thoughts like “ no way this goes in” or “ I am a terrible putter”. At least if I miss a long putt its expected, but with the mid to short range putts there is no excuse and those are the putts that get the best of me.
Tae Bo Workouts
One of my friends introduced Tae Bo by Billy Blanks to me years ago. Initially I thought it was a bunch of silly exercises that wouldn’t really make a difference in a fitness routine. Needless to say, I learned to enjoy Tae Bo and find the exercises really useful and motivating.
There are a variety of DVD’s available and the workouts are designed for various fitness levels. The workouts starts out with great warm-up exercises and stretches, move into cardio and strength exercises, and ends with cool-down stretches. It usually takes about 40 minutes to do workout, which includes warm-up and cool-down. Read more »
Beta Blockers and Target Heart Rate
After calculating my target heart rate, determined that I should be exercising somewhere between 146 and 158 beats a minute. You may remember that 164 was the goal established by the exercise physiologist for the treadmill stress test that I had several weeks ago. Try was we did, though, my heart rate refused to creep above 141... absolutely and completely refused.
I was at the gym yesterday and worked my butt off - I was so soaked that I had to change my shirt half-way through the workout... which is indicative, I'm sure, of my previous inactivity more than the intensity of my workout. Despite my best efforts, though, my heart rate came nowhere near my target range of 146-158... the absolute maximum was 136, with the average being about 120. Read more »

Demonstration videos
One thing that I have noticed over the passed fews in my classroom is that there is a increase of technology use amongst our students and it is becoming a necessity to use in the classroom. We all know that everyone has a different learning strategies and that you need to scaffold the way you teach in order to meet the needs of all your students. A helpful strategy that I found is to include short video clips either ones that I have made myself as a podcast or ones that i have found on the internet. The internet has become such a great resource for teachers. Before starting a new activity I found that my students do better the first time if I show them a demonstration as a video rather than telling them or even myself demonstrating. I am attaching an example, Soccer. Read more »

Running - My Arch Nemesis
I know that running is the perfect exercise. It gets your heart pumping, your body moving, helps keep your bones strong, gives you that slamming body that no other exercise can get quite right, okay I know all of this. The part that doesn't work well in my mind is the feel great about yourself, I can do it attitude. I absolutely HATE to run. I find every excuse in the book NOT to run. Every step hurts me. Well, that's because I don't do it! The times that I have run regularly I have gotten through the painful part and actually got to a point where it was mildly enjoyable, enough so that I looked forward to a daily jog. Once I am out of the running/jogging mood for a while it is like pulling teeth to get me back into it. In Read more »
Watch a Sport Psychology Movie : The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game
When I watched this movie it instantly became one of my all time favorites and therefore an easy choice for this assignment. As I pondered this predicament I decided to discuss two and tie them together. Read more »
Discipline Project
Jr. High Physical Education Discipline/Classroom Management Statement
1) My Philosophy: The goal of all education is for students to learn. For that to be possible there has to be an environment that fosters learning. My physical education class will be an environment in which safety is number one. Students should be able to participate in activities without having to worry about their safety and they should be able to try new things and give there all without fear of ridicule. Measures will be taken to create such an environment. Read more »
Intramurals Season and Tournament
I have created a double round robin season followed by a double elimnation tournament. It's on google docs:
http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0AS1ndFf7vEsxZGdqcWQzczNfNG...
Season Planning
Attached is an all season practice plan that I organized for competitive swimming, incorporating off-, pre-, and in-seasons. I included examples of strength training, conditioning, and flexibility to meet the goal of each section of the season. The outline is sport forcused, but ideally the season activities would integrate an emphasis on team unity and ethics based off the school and coaching philosophies.
San Francisco bans sugary drinks
San Fransisco has decided to ban sugary drinks on city property. I think this is a great idea. I think it would be great if more cities follow suit and ditched the sugary drinks. I just don't know about replacing it with soy and rice milk. I would love to know how that goes over with the SF workers. In case you did not catch the whole story (this part is not on the video and off subject) SF is also looking at banning all pets but fish. I don't agree with that ban.

Legendary Sports Managers - Nominate Your Favorite!
With the passing of George Steinbrenner, I decided to start a collaborative project that compiled some of the greatest team owners/managers in sports. Nominate the person who you believe had an influential effect on a team or sport and explain their major contribution to sports management. It can be any manager/owner in any sport.

Determining Cardiovascular Intensity
I chose to use the textbook's information to calculate my Heart Rate Reserve. The book says recent research indicates that the traditional equation of 220 - age overpredicts MHR in people 40 years and younger and underpredicts MHR is older individuals. However, it's really in what study you read. A study done in 2001 by Tanaka found that the formula mentioned in the textbook can also prove inaccurate.
But I digress. Using the book's formula, since I am 28 years old, my max heart rate would be 207 - (.7 x 28). This equals a MHR of 187.
I took my resting heart rate after reading Chapter 7 of the book, so I was relatively at rest for a little over a half hour. My heart rate was 52 beats per minute. Read more »
Working out can become boring... and then life gets in the way!
Staying healthy is not as easy as books and literature will have you believe. It's a chore.. especially when life happens!
Early last year I decided to go back to school full-time for a bachelors in fire administration. While doing this my department approached me about becoming a paramedic, so I began prerequisites for that (the program starts this coming January). I also was in charge of planning our department's retirement dinner. In addition I realized I graduated high school 10 years ago, and as a class officer, it was my responsibility to plan the 10-year reunion.
Then I got a new puppy so my older dog would have a friend. Big mistake! I forgot how difficult it was to raise a puppy. Read more »

Letterboxing for fitness and fun!
I have heard of letterboxing a few years ago. Letterboxing originated from England in 1854 and has been called other names, such as Questing in the United States. Besides being outside, there are potentially many variations that could be done to accommodate for: a fitness course for kids or adults; a recreation class for a city program; or a elderly outing within the care center industry. Making fitness fun is important and this is one way to accomplish this.

Sport Psychology Movies List Group Project
I’m sure you’ve all noticed that the link to the sport psychology movies in the “Watching a Sport Psychology Movie” assignment in the Apply section for this class doesn’t work. Prof. Sather says he is aware of it and has yet to find a useful list elsewhere on the web. I thought it’d be a worthwhile activity for us to work on a group project creating a sport psychology movie list. If we all contribute a couple of movies then we should have something useful for our class to use for the “Watching a Sport Psychology Movie” assignment and for future classes if Prof. Sather decides to use it. Positive and Negative Reinforecement
It takes a great person to be able to shrug off the pull of using negative reinforcement. This is something that I struggle with daily with my children at home and my crew at work. My supervisor is probably one of the best I have ever seen at keeping positive no matter what the level of adversity is. I try to take a little of his style with me every day. Positive reinforcement is the method used to cajole favorable responses and behaviors from those you are dealing with. Negative reinforcement is the process of punishing the bad with the hope of developing an aversion to the unwanted behavior. Read more »
Self Experience Story - Motivation to achieve
I wanted to share a little story that happened with me last summer. When I’m back home (Lisbon, Portugal) every summer, I do volunteer work for my district, working mainly with African foster kids that live in the projects and suburbs around the city of Lisbon. Our summer camps are based on activities like swimming, group cohesion, and mainly basketball. I had the wonderful experience of last year being able to work with 5 foster kids that were split into different activity groups. In my group two of them when first started the camp seemed to be completely out of the picture, they were not interested in learning, and they were anti-social towards the other kids on the group (each group was about 10-15 kids). Creating Group Cohesion
Many coaches and teams strive to form a cohesive whole to find success in their athletic endeavors. Cohesion deals with a team building a family-type feeling and working together, for each other. Our text book references a definition from Festinger, Schacter, and Black as cohesion being “the total field of forces which act on members to remain in the group.” These “forces” that are referenced in the definition are attractiveness to the group and means control. The first force is basically how strongly the individual wants to interact and work with the other individuals on the team in the specific activities. The second force is referring to what that person can gain from being associated with the specific group. Read more »
Exercise Adherence
One problem that arises whenever you put together a group that is supposed to meet regularly is a problem with adherence. Adherence is a term used to describe how well someone is sticking to something. Exercise adherence then specifically relates to how well a patient or client is sticking to their exercise program, gym program, or the recommendations made to them by their health professional. If I was a director of fitness at a health club, I would no doubt encounter an adherence problem, as the text book states, “about 50% of participants drop out of exercise programs within the first 6 months.” This is a huge percent of the participant population. Learned Helplessness
Taking over a sports team that only won three games in the previous season can be tough and building a program up from nothing can be daunting. Not only is the team trying to come back from a rough season last year, but is also being introduced to a new coach. A coach coming into a situation like this has a lot of challenges ahead including what many of the players could have developed, learned helplessness. Some of the athletes could have developed learned helplessness in order to psychologically deal with the losses from last season along with the potential losses for the up and coming season.
Aggression in sports
Aggression in sports
Sports aren’t necessarily there to punish your opponent physically because if that were the case everybody would just become super buffed and take on anybody. Thought Stopping at Bat
A situation I have often found myself in is batting against a pitcher I deem at good. There are a few pitchers in the conference that for some reason I never think I can hit. (Thank goodness these two pitchers were seniors and will not be around next year). I walk up to the plate, do my routine and look at the pitcher. I start to tense up and my hands go into a power grip. I feel as if I have to prove to myself that I can hit these pitchers.
Some negative thoughts that go through my mind are; I can't hit inside, she is going to hit me, I am just going to strike-out, I am failing my team. Read more »

Objective: goals that focus on "attaining a specific standard of proficiency on a task, usually within a specified times" (Locke, Shaw, Saari, & Latham, 1981, p. 145).
Subjective: general statements of intent, not measurable (Weinburg & Gould, 2007, p. 346).
Outcome: goals that focus on a result of a competitive event (Weinburg & Gould, 2007, p. 346).
Performance: goals that focus on achieving some standard, independent of other competitors (Weinburg & Gould, 2007, p. 346). Read more »

Exercise Situation: Going running after work
Describing the situation: I’m about to get off of work at 5. This is the most tiresome part of my day. All I want to do is go take a nap. I have somewhere to be every night at 6:30 and I still have homework I can get done. Aggression in Women's Basketball
Baylor’s Brittney Griner punched Texas Tech’s Jordan Barncastle, fracturing her nose.
Midway through the second half, Barncastle applied a hard shove to Griner as the two jockeyed for position. As Barncastle walked away from Griner, Griner advanced toward the Lady Raider and swung her fist, striking Barncastle in the face.
Griner received a technical foul and ejection, while the officials ruled Barncastle's actions a flagrant foul. Morghan Medlock and the Lady Raiders' bench each incurred technical fouls.
The Big 12 Conference suspended Griner one game for her "fighting act," and then her coach Kim Mulkey added another game to Griner's punishment. The Big 12 accepted Mulkey's actions and will not pursue further action against Griner. Read more »
A closer look at the transtheoretical model
I was intrigued by the transtheoretical model on pages 422 - 423 of of our book. I believe that learning this well and applying it when I become a fitness professional will allow me to understand people and help them in the best possible way.
First I will do a quick review of the six stages ...
Stage 1 - Pre-contemplation stage - The person is not working out and has no plans to begin within the next six months
Stage 2 - Contemplation stage - The person is beginning to become serious about the possibility of starting to exercise within the next six months (usually stay at this stage for about 2 years though).
Stage 3 - Preparation stage - Person is exercising some but not regularly and not enough to get any real benefits from it. Read more »
Recentering
As I finish Chapter 15 and ponder activity 15.4 I find myself challenged to list new lifestyle behaviors I have added to my life. I feel that I have had a solid exercise program in place for many years and my nutrition is quite healthy when I compare my choices to others. I decided to take a closer look at the Stress Vulnerability Questionnaire and found my score somewhat surprising. I scored 46 points and I fall in the average (somewhat vulnerable to stress) rating. I don't necessarily feel vulnerable to stress but will take the average rating into consideration and look for ways to move higher on the rating scale so that I will become more resistant to stress. Taxing to change behavior
I believe that changing "social norms" is one way to combat unhealthy lifestyle in our society. When habits become socially acceptable they become the "norm". This is true for so many unhealthy choices that people make. Tobacco being one example. In 1960 nearly 45% of the population used tobacco, it was a "social norm" of the times. Today it is less acceptable and this change in "social norm" is decreasing the prevalence of tobacco use. Today, supersizing of EVERYTHING seems to be a "social norm" we went from a day when a large soda was 12 oz. Read more »
I Am A Success!
I have planned to share my insights for the last two weeks. I kept debating how I should present my views. As I am somewhat of a perfectionist, I let my thoughts circle around in my head, until I decided I would just start writing.
Being a perfectionist, I can sometimes have a difficult time completing a task, as everything "must" be done properly. When I began this course, I was serious in my approach. I had to follow each step precisely and read each chapter in order. I structured each day to include an aerobic workout, and made sure I completed a muscle workout every other day. I felt confident in my actions and happy with myself. Read more »
Heartburn and Diet
Esophageal Motility Disorder. That was the name given to me by a specialist investigating why my esophagus was paralyzed and my LES (lower esophageal sphincter) was open. I was told my disease was extremely rare as it did not fit into the classic achalsasia category, or the more common acid reflux category. It was a combination of both, which was contradictory. Achalasia will paralyze the esophagus, and it will keep the LES from opening. Acid reflux, on the other hand, will keep the LES open, allowing the stomach acid back into the esophagus giving the symptoms of heartburn, upper abdominal discomfort, regurgitation of food or liquid especially when bending over or lying down, or the sensation that food is hanging up (University of California Thorasic Read more »

My teaching experience
This term I had the opportunity of teaching in a quite different setting than what i was expecting. As I did last term for Teaching Games and Gymnastics class, I was hoping I could go back to the elementary school where I did my project, and work with the same kids once they already knew me, and because I had a great experience. Well, such thing did not happen due to the fact that as I mentioned in earlier posts, our Physical Education programs here in Portugal (where I live) are way different. To begin with, our government doesn´t give as much emphasis on PE as the American Government, and due to this fact, our school settings are not the best to be able to teach kids with all the material and conditions we would like to. This would evaluate the skills of shot put and long jump. This skill assessment is not based on distance but rather execution of each skill. They get three jumps and three throws each to get judged on and if they do the skill 2 out of the 3 times they get credit
Shot Put-
Ball is on the fingers not palm of the hand- 0-----------1
Ball is pressed firmly against the neck 0--------------1
Elbow is up parallel to the ground and above shoulder 0------------1
Legs are shoulder width apart and knees bent 0--------------1

Rubric for Golf Swing
Here's a general skill rubric for swinging a golf club.
It can be used with whiffle balls because it does not assess the outcome (whiffle balls tend to not be very accurate), only the swing.
It is a little long/detailed and may not be ideal for one teacher to assess a large class.
Addressing the Ball ( _ /6)
- Knees Bent Slightly
- Back Flat
- Head Down
- Arms Straight
- Shoulders Relaxed
- Ball near center line of body off inside of front heel

Review of Literature on Social Physique Anxiety
Review of Literature on Social Physique Anxiety
Abstract:
Social Physique Anxiety is prevalent among women and adolescent girls as the degree to which they become anxious when others observe their physiques. Men do have Social Physique Anxiety, but noticeable behavior change is uncommon. Research from many different sources suggest that BMI, weight, age, and body-image related motives for exercising are the biggest indicators of whether or not a woman will show Social Physique Anxiety. The SPAS questionnaire is a tool used to measure Social Physique Anxiety and has been validated, but is not the most effective way to gauge the presence of Social Physique Anxiety.

Female Athletes And Body Image
Abstract
Nowadays sports are becoming more competitive than ever, but body image and an healthy body bring along other issues that most of us are not familiar with. Young female athletes are more prone with body issues according to a study of Brown University. Sports are considered great aspects of one´s life, emphasizing confidence, self-esteem, and a healthy body. However, this is not always the case. Why are females athletes enrolled in athletics? Is it a way to look for the “perfect body”? Read more »
Review of Research: Home Field Advantage
Abstract: Home field advantage is a well researched topic. In this review of research, support is found for and against the existence of psychological issues related to home field advantage. A possible difference in causes for home field advantage is inferred between professional and amateur levels. Coaches and athletes can make adjustments to account for the causes of home field advantage. Future research should look deeper into comparing professional and amateur causes of home field advantage.

Review of Literature: The Effects of Social Support on Injury Rehabilitation of Athletes
Abstract:
Social support is an important influence that has effects on athletes recovering from injury. Social support can be defined as “an exchange of resources between two individuals perceived by the provider or the recipient to be intended to enhance the well-being of the recipient” (as cited in Shumaker & Brownell, 1984, p. 11). Through process of rehabilitation and recovery, athletes have many providers of such support, these can include trainers, coaches, teammates, medical practitioners and significant others (Corbillion et al., 2008, p. 94). Reviewing current research on social support has shown that there are different types of support athletes receive by different providers, but due to the different data collecting styles comparing results is difficult. Motivation and Burn Out in Elite Athletes
Motivation and Burn Out in Elite Level Athletes
Burn out is a common problem in the sports world that is greatly studied and widely debated. It is very common for young athletes to reach the point of burn out when they have been pushed to compete in only one sport and must focus all of their attention on it. Something that is often overlooked is the problem of burn out in the elite adult athletes. Professional athletes spend all of their time working on one sport, year around, trying to improve their skills and maintain the highest level of focus and competition. Read more »

The Real Reasons Why Everyone Should Exercise
So much emphasis is placed on the fact that exercise and eating healthy makes you lose weight. I once had a store worker tell me "You don't look like you need to exercise!" when I asked if they had a certain exercie video. I honestly think that most people believe exercising and eating healthy is ONLY important for being thin and looking good. Read more »

National PE and Sport Week
I wanted to share the activities I coordinated for "National PE and Sport Week" earlier this month. I think you could easily modify the activities to fit your own site and it would be well worth it. The link at the bottom of the page will take you to my folder at Googledocs. It contains all the flyers and information to run this week at your school. If you have any questions, please email me.
Pangrazi once said that the best thing we can do for our profession is PR. He said we should use any and every opportunity to share with our community all of the wonderful things about our program. With the budget crisis in CA and PE cuts being made left and I right, I thought this event would have a positive impact at my school. It was a HUGE success. Read more »
Group cohesion techniques used to maintain #'s and attendance in exercise groups
The text defines group cohesion as "the total field of forces which act on members to remain in the group" (pg 182). The text states that cohesion is made up of two subcategories. These include attractiveness of the group- how desirable interaction with the members of the group is and participation in the activities of the group, and means of control- the benefits that an individual can expect and receives from participation in the group. Chia Seeds
Who knew that Chia pets were so healthy? My daughter’s roommate recently inquired if I have added chia seeds to my diet. I didn’t reveal to him that I had no idea what he was talking about and could only conjure up the imagine of the beloved holiday gifts. Since then I have seen them in the local health food stores and have done some researching about them. In his recent book “Born to Run”, Christopher McDougall apparently reveals secrets of the world's greatest distance runners the Tarahumara Indians of Copper Canyon, Mexico and a staple in their diet is chia seeds. From the reading that I have done, I would have to agree that these seeds do appear to be the new superfood. Some of their benefits: Read more »
Finished the motivation course with AIS
I just finished the course module on motivation that Dr. Sather told us about through the Austrialian Sports Comission. And I have to admit I am really glad I decided to do this.
The unit it game me was motivation and it really helped me look at what my sources of motivation had been and how sometimes when I am espically feeling mentally strong that I tend to look at extrensic sources of motivation. It also helped me find ways that I can fight when I am frusterated or having issues thinking I can not do something. Which helped me, because it helped me realize that I had the motivation I just needed to know how to trigger it.
I am going to keep working through these on my own time as I am getting a lot of help for my own training challenges and issues.

Communication
“You can communicate without motivating but it is impossible to motivate without communicating.” -John Thompson
Communication
Five techniques I would use as a coach to communicate with athletes are:
1. I would communicate immediatly with my athletes if I observed something that is wrong or I didn't like. Responding right away is more effective for giving feedback to the athlete (Wienburg 2007).
2. I would make sure as a coach my communication is supportive. That means avoiding sarcasm, judgements, negative comparisons, etc. I'll make sure that all my communication is positive.
3. I'll be direct with my communicatin. If I am straightforward with my athlete they will recieve and understand the message and not mistake it for another meaning.
4. I'll focus on one thing at a time when I communicate. Addressing one issue at a time and organizing my thoughts before speaking. Read more »

Plan for Change
Planning for Change
It seems as though I am always setting goals for myself and never accomplishing them. I notice the things I need to work on but ignore working on them. This class has encouraged me to focus on changing my physical and emotional wellness.
I have always lacked self-discipline. If I have a craving for ice cream, instead of eating the recommended serving portion, I eat the whole container. When I make the decision to start working out I stick with it for two weeks before I move on to something new. To better myself, I would like to change my nutrition and physical activity habits. Nordic Walking
Two years ago I had the opportunity to go to Switzerland. I spent two weeks exploring and hiking in the Swiss Alps. I was amazed at the fitness levels of the Swiss people. Their landscape dictates the need to walk most places, as their ancient road systems are not designed for vehicles. I witnessed people in their 70's and 80's still hiking on the narrow, twisting trails, miles from the nearest settlement. I was embarrassed to know our fitness levels in North America would have a hard time comparing favorably to theirs. I was extremely thankful that I'd had a month to precondition before we left, as I am certain I would have been left behind on a mountain top! Read more »

Performance Anxiety
Anxiety is something that all athletes are faced with in the sports environment. I remember watching a show a couple of weeks ago on ESPN about some of the great athletes of basketball that were now retired. The broadcast went over some of the memorable moments in basketball history with the athletes contributing by talking about what they were feeling and thinking during those times. Many of the memorable moments involved little or no time left on the clock and taking a foul shot. Some athletes cringe at the thought of having their foot on that foul line getting ready to take the shot and some athletes wish it was them standing on the line taking that shot. Coaches are faced with the challenge of helping athletes who have performance anxiety. Read more »
Reinforcement
Reinforcement can come in both a positive and negative form. In my personal experience I believe that without a doubt positive reinforcement is the most effective way to improve your athletes overall performance in practice and games, attitude, self-confidence and their willingness to become a better team player. I also think that positive reinforcement can help build a better relationship between the coach and player because the player will have a positive attitude toward the coach if the coach does to the player. By having a good player coach relationship you will be able to get through to your athletes better which will ultimately help the performance of your team. Read more »
Learned Helplessness
Last year I was the Assistant Athletic Director at a private Christian school that was not very strong athletically. With my background in tennis I decided to take on the task of building the tennis program basically from the ground up. The previous season the boy’s high school team had won 2 out of 18 matches and had always had similar results in the past. It was amazing when I started working at the school to hear the attitudes from players, parents and even coach’s, the school was surrounded by negativity towards its athletic programs. My first and most important task was to try and change the overall thinking of the tennis players and program as a whole. Bringing a positive attitude to the table was essential in order to have success, whether it came in Read more »
Reinforcement
Reinforcement is, “the use of rewards and punishments that increase or decrease the likelihood of a similar response occurring in the future” (Weinberg & Gould, 2007, p.126). People mistakenly tend to think of positive reinforcement as rewards and negative reinforcement as punishment, but that is not the case. I pulled out my old psych book from my first degree to get the following definitions. Positive reinforcement is, “a reward (or any pleasing stimulus) that follows an operant and strengthens the associated behavioral response” (Sternberg, 1997, p.176). Or, adding to reinforce; such as giving a high five to strengthen a behavior. Negative reinforcement is, “the removal or the stopping of an unpleasant stimulus, such as physical or psycholo Read more »
5 Key Communications for Head Coaching
Communication
Provide a list of 5 techniques you will (or already) use as a coach to ensure effective communication with your athletes.
I believe communication is the key to success. Communications is very important on many different levels. One important level of communication is schedules and organization. Having a well planned out schedule for the year will help you stay organized and the give the athletes a good idea of what the year will look like. Providing this schedule will help eliminate conflicts with athletes schedules because they will have a good idea of what the season looks like and can plan around that schedule. Read more »
Overcoming Performance Anxiety
If I have an athlete suffering from performance anxiety, I would help her by:
1. Trying to eliminate audiences and evaluation as much as possible in learning situations. According to the social facilitation theory, an audience inhibits performance on tasks that are complex or have not been learned thoroughly and enhances performance on tasks that are simple or have been learned well (Weinberg & Gould, 2007, p.86). Critical features of a slapshot
This can be used as a way to tell how far along or at what stage your students are at. It could also be turned in a rubric if needed.
Some of the critical features to the hockey slap shot are:
1. Bending your knees so that you have a low center of gravity, and to be in a good athletic stance.
2. Positioning yourself so that the puck is located between your legs, but about an arms distance away.
3. Bringing the stick back to get your velocity.
4. Hitting the ice about an inch before hitting the puck with the stick, so that the puck will stay low and have good trajectory and so all of the power from your swing will be transferred into the puck.
5. Shift your weight from your back leg to your front leg to maximize your power. Read more »

Different Sources of Learned Helplessness
Being a college athlete, interested in being a physical therapist and physical education teacher, I have seen learned helplessness and will have the opportunity to see more cases in my years to come. The first case of learned helplessness that I encountered was in Junior high P.E. class. This area is very susceptible for individuals having learned helplessness, because students are forced to be there. It is different in sports, it is the players choice to be there participating, however there are cases of learned helplessness however it is a slightly different kind.
Learned helplessness can stem from different areas: whether it is caused by low self-esteem, or not wanting to participate or even being so called "babied" your whole athletic career. Read more »

Learned Helplessness (Motivation)
Imagine you take over as coach of a team that only won 3 games last year. Choose a sport and then design a program to eliminate learned helplessness in the participants. Be specific with the steps you will take to remedy this problem.
If I took over a cross country team that had severe learned helplessness from a lack of previous sucess I would be very quick to start a process of mending this broken mental state of the team. In order to do this I would take several steps involving goal assessment, assesssment of their acheivement motivation, and making sure lack-of-ability attributions to failure are replaced with lack-of-effort attributions(Weinberg and Gould, 1995).

Performance Anxiety- How I would deal with my athletes with performance anxiety
If I was a coach of an athlete with performance anxiety I would do the following three things to help them overcome their anxiety:
1. The first thing I would do is try to understand where the athletes anxiety comes from. I would do this by using the anxiety tests outlined in the text to help me determine what kind of anxiety the athlete suffers from. Do they have trait anxiety or state anxiety. Once I have identified the type of anxiety that they athlete has I can move on to the next step in helping them overcome their anxiety. Read more »

Learned Helplessness
I’ve actually faced real life learned helplessness when I first worked as a PE teacher and coach at a private PreK-8 school. I coached boy’s flag football, boy’s basketball, boy’s soccer, and girl’s basketball. We were the smallest school in our sports division and historically had gotten beat on in competition. In fact, the athletic director said the toughest thing I would face was turning the culture around at the school. It was pretty bad. The kids didn’t play very hard, were discouraged easily, and dreaded playing the “big” schools. At the beginning, I often had to talk kids into joining the teams. What I did to fight this problem was to be as positive as possible, get my athletes focused on improving week to week instead of winning Read more »
EOU Classes Submit Entries for the NASPE Video Contest
Two EOU classes have submitted videos for a NASPE Video Contest which seeks to answer the following question: How do you use technology and other innovative practices to make physical education more exciting to students? We're sharing these videos projects with you here. Comments and views at YouTube are appreciated, since this will generate positive scores in the judging criteria for the videos. Here are the links:

Movie Analysis:
The movie I chose to write on is "The Blind Side". It wasn't on the suggested link, but this movie is too good not to comment on. This movie includes motivation, communication and self-confidence. The idea was based on a true story of an african american boy, who was able to join a private school, in hopes he woulde participate in athletics. Read more »
Sport Psychology to a Career
The career that I and many of you are interested in pursuing is elementary physical education. Most people have heard that a large potion of the population in the United States is overweight. There has been much talk about obesity in children who live in the State of Maine. There has been a debate heard here and there in the past few years about whether school districts need or should dedicate more time for physical activity as part of the school curriculum. Physical education teachers in the State of Maine as well as throughout the country are faced with some of the same challenges, to motivate students.
P90x
I am doing my first project on the P90x.
For the people that haven't heard of it is an extensive 90 day program that is designed to help you lose weight, build muscle, and increase cardio and flexibility in 90 days. It works! (Thus far anyways.)
I am on my 46th day of the program and the changes have been awesome! The strategy behind this program is 'muscle confusion'. Many people go to the gym and do the same routine over and over and end up at a plateau. The P90x uses a variety of moves that continually challenges different muscle groups. By the time you have mastered one move it is time to start working on another group, hence, muscle confusion, there is no plateau. Read more »
Individual and Team Motivation
When reading the suggested applications of content for this class I was reminded of a situation of when I started playing high school basketball. The year before I was a freshman, the high school women’s team won a few games, putting it nicely. My freshman year we had a new coach, and another under .500 season. After that season, we were left with, yet again, another new coach. The application for motivation was to imagine you take over as coach of a team that only won 3 games last year, and design a program to eliminate learned helplessness in the participants. This was exactly the case for the head coach who came to our team my sophomore year. Read more »

Hot Health Topic: Tanning
How safe is tanning?
A hot topic in health today is the safety of tanning beds, or tanning in general. Many however, may not know the dangers that come with this exposure to UV radiation. Read more »
Project Applying Sports Psychology in a Career
I am thinking about pursuing a career in coaching track and cross country. There are numerous psychological aspects of running that can make or break an athletes success as a runner. Being a coach it would be my responsibility to ensure that my athletes are in the best psychological condition to succeed and enjoy their experiences. There are obviously many examples of psychological aspects of running but some include motivation, anxiety, and confidence. Read more »
Safety and Risk Managment
Last quarter I developed a risk management plan for coaching. Due to the similarities between sport and the PE classroom, I have taken that plan and made adjustments to make it fit the physical education environment. Using ideas from the NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching (2009) class, the Popwarner.com Risk Management Manual (2004), and the Dynamic Physical Education for Elementary School Children (2010) book I’ve made a list of ways that I plan on limiting injury risk to the students who take part in my classes. This discipline project is designed for a Middle School PE class. It will be something which is presented to the administration and staff teams so they are aware of the policies and procedure in physical education. Proposal: Addition of a Personal Training Preparatory Class
I am proposing that EOU's Physical Activity & Health (PHYSH) program add a course that will give its students practical and hands-on experience in personal training. This class would provide students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge learned in the core Exercise Science classes, and give them experience and confidence in personal training.
See the above attachments for the written details of the proposal.
Below is a video presentation of the proposal's main ideas.
Jogo da Macaca - Portuguese traditional game

Successful Fundraiser
I have been away from the site for the last week or so because I was in the final stages of preparing for my school's TRIATHLON fundraiser. I organized this school-wide, student event and it was held on Thursday, Feb 4th. I have been a stress maniac over it, but I'm so happy to announce that we raised just over $9,000 for our school. We are donating $1,000 to the American Heart Association. It was a great day! The kids had a BLAST! (The local paper came out to take pictures and interview kids so I hope to post that next week.)
The basics: Students would train for and participate in 3 events: dancing, jumping and walking. They would spend 15 minutes involved in each activity at stations and conclude at a snack station of water and orange slices. Read more »

Creatine Position Statements
I have initiated this project in an effort to develop a consice list of current beliefs adn positions regarding the use of creatine, specifically by high school students. I did some research looking for studies on the effects of creatine supplementation. Very little good work is available. I did find this 2001 Study that did a fairly good job. Youth Baseball Drill
When researching for a youth baseball practice plan, I ran into this video on YouTube. I liked the approach from this coach because for a new player catching a ball can probably be a little scary. The coach makes learning how to catch a baseball safe and fun for the youngster.
Little League Baseball Practice
When thinking about coaching, I always find myself thinking about the elementary school student athletes. Maybe that’s because I always had a lot of fun with sports when I was younger. I guess it shouldn’t be a big surprise that I want to teach elementary physical education. I didn’t realize just how hard it is to set up one practice for a student athlete that is just trying to grasp the basic skills of a sport.

Interview with my high school track coach
For my coach interview, I chose to call up my high school track coach (who is an EOU alum). He was one of the best coaches I have ever been able to work with and someone that I will always remember when I am creating my own coaching methods.
Q: What are the main challenges you face in coaching high school track and field?
Coach B: High school track presents many challenges as their are many different levels of athletes. Some kids are out to reach a high level, while others are simply wanting to hang out with their friends. Organizing this large number of athletes and keeping them focused on their tasks to help them reach their potential is the biggest challenge.

Interview with Coach Ellis of Mount Baker High School
For this assignment I interviewed my old basketball coach at Mount Baker HS. She is still the varsity girls coach there, and is doing a wonderful job. I asked her a series of questions and she answered them wondergfully.
Q 1: What made you want to be a basketball coach, let alone a coach? Did you have anyone who inspired you, or someone who guided you?

Performance Evaluation
The performance evaluation is for a head coach for any type of sports at the high school level. The evaluation is a formal structured system which measures the coach on a rating scale basis. This particular evaluation rates the coach on excellent, good, average, below average and poor. Although there are numbers listed under each category, this evaluation does affiliate a total score with the success of the coach being evaluated. The number is a way for the evaluator to indicate which rating scale they fall under. Read more »
Trying to make a workout out of farm chores. Any suggestions???
Farm Chore Workout
This week I spoke with a friend who had a great idea for a combined cardiovascular and muscular workout using simple materials found on a farm. My friend is a wrestler at a community college, but he also works on a relative’s farm part time during the week. He asked his coach if he could use parts of his work for his weekly workout if he developed a plan and stuck to it. The trick to this kind of workout is coming up with a number of repeatable exercises that could be accomplished during the course of a day’s work without actually changing the work itself. Evaluation of an Interview Tool
Evaluation of the City of Bozeman’s Lifeguard I Interview Tool:
Currently the City of Bozeman has a different evaluation tool for each position. At the Swim Center we have three different tools for my position, which is the Lifeguard III, down to the Lifeguard I position. For this assignment I am going to review and edit the current Lifeguard I Interview Tool used during the hiring process. It has been over ten years since I went through the Lifeguard I hiring process. After looking at this I can tell that it has definitely been improved since I was hired. Some of the questions are the same, but some have been changed to reflect the change in the social environment and position.
Recent Experience in Conflict Resolution
I currently hold the low level management position of Lifeguard III in our facility. In reality I was becoming increasingly frustrated with the individuals in-which I am supposed to be supervising, due to the fact they were bypassing me with their problems and going directly to my supervisors. The tension in the air was becoming thicker by the day. It was becoming more difficult to even say, “how was your week-end?” I finally, during my break, went to my supervisor and asked what I needed to do to resolve the situation. We discussed things that were going on, and found out that part of the problem was that my superiors were not helping the situation for a couple of reasons. First, they were letting them come to them with their issues and not giving me Read more »

Referee Interview
You are missing some Flash content that should appear here! Perhaps your browser cannot display it, or maybe it did not initialise correctly.
I interviewed an interscholastic referee I've known for about 20 years now. Bill has officiated for the majority of that time, stopping not that long ago. I thought it would be useful to hear things from a ref's perspective. What I found most interesting was when I asked him what the hardest part of officiating was. I was completely expecting him to say "bad coaches" or something along that line. If you don't want me to spoil it for you before you listen, stop reading this now and continue after listening to the interview. So what he said was: parents. I never thought about the fact that it's easier to control coaches where it is normal to give warnings, technicals, and sometimes eject a coach, but there are no technicals for the crowd. Not to mention, your average parent doesn’t have the same sport IQ as a coach or ref, so they can be more likely to get on the ref and not fully understand a situation. Not to mention, parents are inherently protective of their children. I know in the future I will hold the parents of my teams to higher standards, much like they show in a "teachable moment" video for the NFHS coaching course.

Brady Hazen's Practice Plan
Using suggestions from the NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching (2009) class and various websites (which are linked in my practice plan), I have made a jr. high basketball practice plan. I designed this with the thought of developing a template that I could use for future coaching and easily adjust based on the needs of the team. One area I found difficult was giving proper time to each section (which can change anyhow depending on what the team needs), even with the NFHS time suggestions. Let me know what you think!

Risk Management
Risk management is one of the most important jobs a coach has. As a coach, you are responsible for not only your athletes’ health and safety, but possibly the other team and the spectators’ safety as well. According to the article “Psychology of Sport Injury”, “It has been reported that high school athletes account for an estimated two million injuries, a half-million doctor visits and 30,000 hospitalizations annually (Powell & Barber-Foss, 1999)” (NFHS 2009). After going through the NFHS Learning Center’s core courses, I have learned a lot about risk management including the Risk and Injury Prevention Checklist, the Emergency Care Plan, Risk Warning form for parents/guardians. Games & Activities Lesson Plan - 1st Grade
Below is a lesson plan for a Cops & Robbers, a game that I know my kids love to play in their elementary school physical ed. class. I think it's important to note that even though many of the games and activities elementary school children play are basic, they should still fulfill state physical education standards (in my case, the standards for IL). Any recommendations would be helpful. Thanks

Basketball Coaching Philosophy
Here is my Basketball Coaching Philosophy according to some principles i have learned from John Wooden.
Having the chance of being a basketball coach should be appreciated and admired by those who have the opportunity of having such a great privilege.
One of the most important things for a coach is to develop his own philosophy. This will eventually come along mostly with experience, but also based on experienced thinking.
In my opinion, basketball should be played at a fast pace, and because of that we will face higher chances of our athletes to make mistakes which we are not able to predict. As a coach, I will have to do my best to overcome and to deal with these situations, and that´s what makes Basketball such a beautiful game. Read more »

Benefits From a Vegetarian Diet
There has been much controversy over vegetarian diets since they became popular. People start thinking one thing about the diet and soon the belief spreads like the flu. There are many truths and myths out there about vegetarian diets. This is due to people not being properly informed on vegetarian diets. They just believe whatever they hear about the diet and form their opinion based solely on that, regardless of facts. Although some of the rumors are accurate, people need to be better informed on the subject. The rumor I found interesting is that people believes eating a vegetarian diet makes you more healthy. The role of a physical education teacher
I recently had the opportunity to attend a lecture by Dr. Robert Pangrazi at the Wyoming State AAHPERD Convention. Dr. Pangrazi is what I would consider an expert in the field of physical education. He has published over 50 textbooks and over 100 research articles on the subject, and now conducts training workshops for physical education teachers nationally (WAHPERD, 2009). Being involved in physical education for many years, he posed an interesting question to the teachers attending his lecture: what is your goal as a physical education teacher? Read more »
Effects of Cardiovascular Exercise on Clinical Disorders

Please note my comments on this expert stage jr. high female soccer player at http://pevideo.org/node/697#comment-827. In critiquing this video of a trial of the Mitchell Soccer test, I became curious as to how many kicks in 3 trials is considered an expert score. A google search provided the link to the norms published in the 1963 Mitchell Study, which indicate this athlete is well above the intermediate (norm) level. The athlete in the video completes 18 legal kicks in this single trial, with the norm for 3 trials at 34.8 in the Mitchell study of 192 5th & 6th grade boys. Read more »

Kettlebells
Kettlebells is a new type of exercise that I have been told can be very beneficial. I haven't used them or seen them, only heard about them. I looked online to see what they may look like but that is as far as it went. They range in expense from $14 range clear on up depending on how fancy and such you want to go.
The first website I went to gave me a little history of kettlebells, also had some exercise ideas and also happened to sell them. It was http://www.uskettlebells.com/. Kettlebells seemed to loose their popularity about 100 years ago per this website. They are gaining again though among weightlifters of all types. Read more »

When you step on a treadmill to go for a run, have you ever noticed that some treadmills seem more difficult than others when they are set at the exact same speed? Exercise Equipment Review
The exercise equipment that I am reviewing is the TRX suspension training bands. The TRX suspension bands can be used to build flexibility, balance, core stability and strength. These bands are really versatile because anywhere you can hang them that they will be sturdy is your gym. I tried four different exercises with them at the gym today. For one of the exercises I leaned back against the bands, facing the bands, elbows down, arms outstretched and then brought myself forward until my arms were bent, which works the biceps. It was somewhat difficult at first because it's hard to get used to and it requires some balance and the use of core muscles. I did three other exercises and my overall opinion is that I like this equipment. Read more »

Cardiovascular Intensity Monitor
I have been researching different monitors for quite some time. A friend of mine has Polar heart rate monitor and when we were working out together, I found it very fascinating. So today before I started my workout I asked if I could borrow hers. She showed me how to operate it and off I went. I started it at the beginning of my workout and was very impressed with how it kept up with what I was doing. A downfall of this is that I was constantly watching the monitor to see what i was doing instead of focusing on my workout. So while it gave me a good insight as to how intense my workout was, I'm not overly convinced that having one of these on is productive. Read more »

Current Topic: Alleged NCAA Sanction violations against Rodriguez and the University of Michigan football program
Background information:
In August of this year the Detroit Free Press broke the story after interviewing at least 6 former/current player of Rich Rodriguez at the U of M. The article suggested that Rodriguez exceeded practice regulation times during and pre-season. The players were asked very general questions about amount of practice time compared to last year and high school. The Univeristy of Michigan has no known history of NCAA sanction violations in football. Rodriguez went 3-7 last year.
A similar case happend in 2002 at San Diego State where they were brought up on violation charges envolving practiced and assistant coaches profitting from them. They suffered scholarship loss and placed on probation for 2-4 years. Read more »
Iron Deficiency and Anemia
Most of my adult life I have been low in iron especially when I was pregnant. I was extremely tired, absolutely no energy, bags under my eyes, etc. Iron deficiency causes anemia which impairs a person’s physical and mental performance. I have tried to give blood during blood drives but they tell me they don’t want my blood because I am anemic (P.S. this is an inexpensive way to find out if you are anemic or not). I have taken iron supplements and don’t like the side effects. At one time way-back-when, I was told to eat lots of spinach because it was high in iron. I like spinach so I ate lots of it. Years later I learned that there was a miscalculation of the amount of iron in spinach; it has iron but not what we were lead to believe. Read more »
U6 Soccer Practice Plan - Feedback Appeciated
The following is a Soccer Practice Plan for a U-6 Soccer Team. Due to the age and skill level of these new players, practices are 1 hour in duration. Prior to beginning, I would ensure all players have the proper equipment, have removed jewlery and are hydrated. I don't do a lot of stretching with young kids as research shows it is not the best use of team time as they are already flexible. I do have them stretch the muscle groups used during activity as part of the cool down to prevent soreness.

So, if you use either of these exercise equipments please fill me in with your reasons. Also, I was curious to find out what was the differences as far as training intensities were. My teaching experience
For my second teaching experience, I taught 5-7 year old boys basketball skills. Due to their level of motor development, I knew that skills would not be perfect, but they were excited to learn about the sport.
Set Up: I had each stand near a colored cone to help prevent them from moving around to different spots constantly. I had balls for each boy. The smallest boy, Zach, was five years old and the other two boys, Dillon and Peter, were seven. I knew he would not exhibit good dribbling skills yet, but I was curious as to what he would be able to do (and he was the little brother of one of the seven year olds, so he came along). Zach received a smaller sized ball so he could handle it better. Read more »

Monitoring Cardiovascular Intensity
One of the best ways to monitor cardiovascular intensity is by using a Polar heart rate monitor. Polar has been designing and creating heart rate monitors since 1982. I personally love the heart rate monitor and have all my clients using one as well. The polar system combines the watch as well as a chest strap that detects or heart rate to give you an accurate reading of what your heart is doing. The main advantages of this is you know exactly what intensity or heart rate training zone you are working in. This is because you can enter your heart rate training intensities into the watch by using the HRR formula. Peer Evaluation of Scatter Square Dance lesson
My lesson, Scatter Square Dance, was observed by the Adapted PE Specialist, Vicki Landon. I copied the rubric published in the Learning Guide and Vicki used that to criteria to evaluate me. Instead of scanning her copy, I retyped it and included it as a link to googledocs. The followup discussion that Vicki and I had is summarized below.
To view the rubric used to evaluate my lesson, please click the link below. That should ( I hope) take you to google docs where the rubric was formatted. Thank you

My Risk-Reduction Plan
In the course of a week, I teach PE to over 450 K-6th grade students in an elementary school setting. Our learning environment is primarily a partially fenced-in lawn area which is used by the public when school is not in session. When it rains, I hold PE in my classroom. I pick-up and deliver a new group of students to their classrooms every 30 minutes for a fast-paced day without breaks. This is my third year as the PE Specialist. Being a former firefighter, the health and safety of my students has real signifcance to me and is always a priority in planning and instruction. Read more »
Managing Fall Sports in hot weather
Coaching a fall sport and also doing some Athletic Directing in the past, it is very important to stress proper conditioning in hot, humid weather. The following link is an article provided by the Michigan High School Athletic Association that provides important information on this topic. Since this is a sports management class and many are coaching, I thought this could be helpful.
Darwinism and a Strategy for Survival in Business
In his essay "The origin of strategy," Henderson (2005) postulates that the key difference between Darwinian natural selection and business strategy is the deliberate and accelerated nature of the latter--a result of human imagination and logic. The analogy between business and biological fitness is based on both entities fighting for limited resources. In turn, those that distinguish themselves with unique survival characteristics continue on, while others die.
To prosper, Henderson suggests that organizations distinguish themselves through a combination of the following: Read more »

The Virtual Fitness Club Movement
The Virtual Club Movement
Health Club Management Magazine had an article on their online edition this month regarding Virtual Clubs, and how there is a growing trend for fitness clubs to offer training and nutrition services online. According to the article, at least in the UK where this article was written, their services only get to 13 percent of the population.
I have tried a couple online fitness club options when I started my weight loss and fitness journey. For some people they work, and they work beautifully, it is like distance education for college.
For the gyms it’s a win-win, they are still able to recruit members, but they cut down on the overhead of maintaining equipment or staff needs. Members can work out at their own pace. Read more »
YouTube video for exercise bands
A couple days ago I posted about the new elastic workout bands I had recently purchased ( http://www.unicommons.com/node/5453 ). In an effort to get the most out of this new exercise tool, I browsed the internet looking for some workout ideas. On YouTube yesterday I came across a video of NFL player Terrell Owens promoting elastic bands and his "personalized" workout. The video (posted below) is certainly a marketing tool, but it still displays the wide range of uses for the elastic bands. This video is great for an overview, but it is really lacking when it comes to explaining technique. This was disappointing at first, but then I found that there are accompanying videos that go in depth with each exercise. Read more »
