Creatine Position Statements

I have initiated this project in an effort to develop a consice list of current beliefs adn positions regarding the use of creatine, specifically by high school students. I did some research looking for studies on the effects of creatine supplementation. Very little good work is available. I did find this 2001 Study that did a fairly good job. I realize its a little old, but the information is good. Here is another research article (slightly newer) courtesy of the Gatorade Sports Science Institute. Read more »

Current Topic: A Second Chance

Most of the entire college football world knows LaGarret Blount, as the man who threw the infamous punch.  Here's a brief history of events that occured on September 3rd.  After the game between Oregon and Boise State was over, a Boise player (Houyt) had some words with Blount as Blount was walking off the field.  Blount then threw a punch that dropped the Boise play to the ground.  To make the issue worse, Blount totally lost control of himself, going into a tirade, yelling back at Boise fans.  Blount had to be physically guided back to Oregon's locker room.  That very next day it was announced that Blount, Oregon's star running back would be suspended indefinitely. Technology In Sport

Technology in sport is a very sensitive issue to lots of people.  I think I am going to take the view of getting technology into the game of baseball.  While there is now instant replay for home run balls, I think that there should be instant replay for the entire game just like in football or basketball.  This last World Series just made me a strong advocate of getting instant replay for every aspect of baseball.  Read more »

Current Topic: Tim Donaghy

Last night on 60 Minutes they interviewed Tim Donaghy, the disgrace referee who was caught betting on NBA games as a referee.  He also bet on games that he was actually reffing that night.  I put a link on this paper that shows the whole interview from 60 Minutes.  I think that watching this interview will tell you a lot of stuff on Tim Donaghy's situation.  I think that this was kind of unbelievable.  I can't imagine how you would bet on a game you were reffing.  This interview tells you everything from the way he would go about reffing games that he bet on to what players they gave preferential treatment and which players they would try and get into trouble so that the team he bet on would win.  Donaghy does say however that he is not the only ref th Read more »

Wrestling: Sport or Not?

When one looks into the world of pro wrestling many conflicts arise. The biggest question that people ask is if pro wrestling is a sport or is it just entertainment. my own personnel views is that it's just a form of entertainment. I would put pro wrestling in the same category as a magicshow before a football game. Nothing that they do is real. The so called professional wrestlers just do fake fighting for people's entertainment. no one is actually showing skill when they are preforming. When I think of a sport, I think of someone who actually has to practice and shows dedication. Now real wrestling is most definitely a sport. The athletes who do real wrestling have to practice a lot . they learn their skills and move over time and effort. Read more »

CURRENT TOPIC: 'Fair Play' goal

Attached below is an article that deals with a soccer match in Italy, where a team(Ascoli) allowed the opposing team (Reggina) to score an uncontested goal.  This was an attempt make up for a play earlier in the game when a Reggina player tried to kick the ball out of bounds so he could receive medical treatment.  An Ascoli player intercepted this kick, passed to a teammate who then scored.  The Ascoli team, as a whole, decided to let Reggina have a free goal in an effort to make up to Reggina.Fans are outraged and now an investigation has been initiated into whether the goal was legal since nobody attempted to stop them. Ascoli eventually lost the game 3-1 Read more »

The recession and athletics

Most Americans have witnessed the calamitous economy over the past year and continue to wonder when the hurt will be through.  Though recession’s insidious nature is ubiquitous and severe, some industries have had the safety net of bail outs.  Lamentably, one of the hardest hit and seemingly least responded to, is the education system and more specifically, athletics.

Relationship Between Physical Education & Athletics

Throughout history sporting events and athletics have been a driving force for many human beings. Needing to compete and win or even the drive to participate in any given sport gives a euphoria or pleasure that encourages many athletes today. Many men and women have been given the title of athlete but the question remains about the definition of this term. Read more »

Technology in Sport

When someone talks about technology, people think of cell phones, computer, satellites, etc. We think of how technology is always changing and it seems to be for the better. What about genetic enhancement? Genetic enhancement is where an individual injects DNA of an animal into themselves. This individual then quickly becomes faster and stronger. How will athletics change with this new technology? Are there any ethical issues with this athletic enhancement? What will this do to the future of sports? Read more »

Looking at Myself

The other day I was thinking about the discussion on performance enhancing drugs that we had in class a while back. I was taking my medication before going to bed. A thought then occured to me, that I was taking these prescription drugs for a heart problem and asthma. I then realized if I was not participating in a sport I would not these medications. I do have severe asthma but it only affects me in exercising. This is the same with my heart condition in which I am on a steroid for. Neither medications I take are on the banned substance list, but the main purpose of me taking these medications is to be able to participate in sport. Lumpkin, Stoll and Beller pointed out that winning is moviation of taking performance enhancing drugs. Read more »

Thank you Nascar Technology.

We owe a lot of thanks to Nascar and Car Racing Technology.  Today’s passenger cars have borrowed several helpful things from both stock cars and Indy-style racing (Peterson, 2009). Here are the top 5-1. Keyless Ignition- luxury passenger cars are now offering a similar push-button feature. 2. Semi-Automatic Transmissions- this can increase gas mileage by up to 10 percent. 3. Door cushioning-foam is inserted into the doors to absorb as much impact as possible, (a good thing if you are T-Boned). 4. Lightweight Body Materials-fuel-saving opportunities as total car weights can be reduced.5. Soft Walls. Read more »

Current Topic: Iverson has a Change of Heart

I came across this story on SportsCenter on ESPN. I wasn't really watching the television but suddenly was drawn to the screen when I saw Allen Iverson with tears in his eyes giving a heart felt press conference about being signed back to the Philadelpha Seventy Sixers, the team in which he began his career and spent 10 seasons with the team, including 2001 when he was the league MVP. He claims that he just wants to be a part of this team and get them back to the playoffs. This is a complete change of heart, because Iverson had previous been released from a couple teams because he wanted to start on the teams he was on. Iverson who is 34 is no longer the star he once was and must now except a the role as a role player on a team if he wants to experience success again. Read more »

Football Coach Resigns: For Abuse?

University of Kansas football coach, Mark Mangino, just resigned. He has led the Jayhawks to their best season ever, making a mediocre team a powerhouse over his eight year tenure. So why is he resigning three years before his contract is up, making over two million dollars a year!  It has been an internal affair, information shared with only Mangino and the Kansas administration, regarding Mangino's  "settlement." All we know is that it is "satisfactory" to both parties. Read more »

Biggest Loser

I have been watching the "biggest Loser" show for a couple year now. I had always thought it was a really great show and that finally there was a reality  T.V. show that was interesting and did good for people at the same time. But this morning it hit me that I had learned in my HWS 250 class that it is unhealthy to lose to much weight to fast. Then I thought to myself how can it be healthy for a person very overweight to lose anywhere from 5-20lbs. a week? and then continue this for several weeks?Another aspect to the show that blew me away is the fact that they have the biggest losers run a marathon! How can this be good on their knees and joints? How about there feet? Read more »

Current Topic: Ron Artest Admits to Drinking at Halftime of NBA Games

I was outraged when I read this article. In this article from ESPN.com Ron Artest, a forward for the L.A. Lakers admits that he drank at half time during his time with the Chicago Bulls. In the article he admits to partying and using marijuana on a regular basis. He also claims that the brawl that ended his season with over a sixty game suspension in 2004. He also stated that he still wants to fight Ben Wallace, of the Chicago Bulls, who pushed Ron Artest during the infamous brawl between the Pistons and the Pacers. Finally he goes on to trash a ref in the league for bad calls during last year’s NBA Finals. The questions that I have are why is this guy allowed to keep opening his mouth and voicing his opinion to the public and why are we still listening to this guy. Read more »

Morals and Values

Moral Values and the Importance in our Lives

Moral values are defined as “The worth each individual places on specific non moral values that affect and impinge on others” (Lumpkin, Stoll, & Beller, 2003). The four major moral values identified in the book Sport Ethics: Application for Fair Play are honesty, justice, responsibility, and beneficence. I believe that these four moral values are universal moral values. I believe that they apply to every situation in our lives. In everything we do we should ask ourselves is this fair? Am I being honest? Is this going to do harm to others? Am I being respectful of others and myself? If we addressed these questions for every situation I believe that we would make better moral decisions in our lives. I believe that these concepts absolutely belong in sports. Read more »

Moral Values

The four primary moral values are honesty, justice, responsibility, and beneficence.  I do believe these four moral values described in the book are universal to all people in all situations. I believe these four values should be a major part of our lives, and even though they are separate values they all work together to achieve a single goal, which is a high character, high quality human being.
