Rejuvenating Your Majors' Club
Project Purpose: Re-form the physical activity and health majors' club at Eastern Oregon University. The club should include both on-campus and online students, since there are a substantial number of majors in both venues.
Background: The physical education majors club existed in the past, and still exists on paper today. In the 1990s, the club was active at sporting events to raise money for their functions. They served a major role as the "Quinn Crazies" and collected money in fundraising efforts at the games. The club eventually diminished and is currently inactive. Read more »
Self Evaluation Via Video
When I returned to my classroom computer after teaching today, I noticed this post did not publish last week due to some type of site error. Although this course concluded last week, I am posting this anyway since I took the time to type this out last week. I have copied it into a new project and hope it publishes this time. My intent last week was to share my observations of my teaching video and to highly recommend this method of self evaluation as follows: Read more »
Soccer Unit Plan
Introduction: Below is the soccer unit I taught fall. These lessons engage students and teach a good sequence of soccer skills. I use activities that embed the skills being taught into the objective of the activity. For example, many students start out wanting to do hard kicks when dribbling and passing before they have mastered control of the ball. These drills force them to keep the ball close and focus on maintaining control of the ball.
My "Red Light-Green Light" soccer game teaches dribbling/control by keeping the ball close to the feet in order to stop he ball successfully. "Soccer Hoops" also requires keeping the ball close to the feet and under control in order to dribble and tap the ball into the proper hoop. Read more »
Volleyball Terminology and Rules for the New Teacher
Please check out the reference sheet I made for the beginning elementary teacher who is getting ready to teach a volleyball unit for the first time. I wish I had this to use a few years back!

Olympic Basketball Trivia
Beth Judge's posting on Basketball History reminded me a piece of Basketball trivia I found impressive in reading our text for this course.
Our U.S. Men's Olympic Basketball team has taken the gold medal in all but five Olympic games (1972, 1980, 1988, 2002, 2004), since it was added as an Olympic sport in 1936! I also learned that the U.S. "Dream Team" was created as a result of our third place finish in 1988. This is when the U.S. Men's Team began to allow pro. players to try out for the men's Olmpic Basketball team. This strategy worked and we reclaimed the gold in 1992.
I like to open my sports lessons with sports trivia to hook my students into the lesson.
History of Basketball
History of BASKETBALL
Basketball was invented in December 1891 by James Naismith. Naismith introduced the game when he was an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association Training School (now Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts. Naismith had 14 days to create an indoor game that would provide an "athletic distraction" for a rowdy class through the cold New England winter. The game involved elements of American football, soccer, and hockey, and the first ball used was a soccer ball. Teams had nine players, and the goals were wooden peach baskets affixed to the walls.
How Do You Know You've Scored?
For those of you aspiring PE teachers, I thought you may be interested in seeing an "real world" example of a PE teacher evaluation by a school principal. This evaluation covers lessons I was observed teaching to K-6th graders between Aug. and Nov. this year. These lessons included fitness activities, circuits, obstacle courses as well as soccer and flag football units. Read more »
Interview with professional
I decided to Interview Mr. Armstrong, an Elementary School Physical Education Teacher and a Coach for the Middle School Baseball team for 5 years. I shared with him my interest in baseball and experience working with youth, as well as my goal in pursuing the same profession as a Primary level Phys Ed Teacher and Baseball Coach. In the Interview I asked him the following 15 questions and got the following answers: 1) Why did you want to become a Phys Ed teacher and coach? “My passion in sports and experience with kids. I always enjoyed having the ability to be influential to them in a positive way. I didn’t want to pursue a profession that involved sitting in an office in a suit and tie my whole life. I enjoy being active and directing activity.”
Guest Teacher Comments on My Flag Football Lesson
As promised, I scanned the comments left by my guest teacher last week and have included them here. Although she doesn't mention details about my flag football lesson plan itself, she describes the positive experience she had teaching my classes. By providing an indepth lessson plan, I intended that she'd feel in control of the very fast-paced lessons/day my school schedule requires.
I apologize that I had to substantially darken her comments for them to become visible on the scanner (in pencil). I belleve they'll post legibily via this link:

Flag Football Lesson Plan for Guest Teacher
Last week, I needed a guest teacher to teach my PE classes for the first time. I wanted to ensure my flag football unit moved seamlessly forward in my absence and that my students would enjoy the lesson format they are familiar with. The PE schedule my school requires is very fast-paced so I orgainized my lesson plan in a sequential manner as follows:
THANK YOU FOR TEACHING MY CLASSES! They're great kids who love PE. I hope
you enjoy them as much as I do!

Track and Field Lesson Plan
Grade level: 9th grade
School: Union Elementary
Equipment: batons, and a track
Warm up: start off by running one lap around the track. Then get into lines and do plyometrics- skipping, swivel hips, penguins, and knee hugs.
Relay: show them how to handoff the baton properly- when receiving the baton wait until your teammate gets a certain ways away from you and take off in a sprint ( don't look back) and when they say "stick" reach you arm back. When handing off you will sprint to your teammate and when they are within reach you yell "stick" and bringing your hand from underneath (not over) place the baton into the teammates hand.
Let them practice some hand offs and then let them race (dividing them up evenly). Read more »

Vote to Name the Majors Club
It may be too late to do this and perhaps it may need to carry over into next term, but I thought I'd take the names suggested so far and make a poll/survey. If you want to vote on your favorite name, follow the link below and do so. If you have a suggestion for a different name, add it to the collaboration and it will be addresses next term.
