Lateral Thigh Trainer
Earlier this week, I began to think about how I could incorporate some type of aerobic workout in my work place. I knew I only had a small area in which to place 'something' to use as a workout medium. I finally decided on a stair stepper.
When I went to the store to purchase a stair stepper, my eyes caught a box that said "Lateral Thigh Trainer". Instead of the steps going straight up and down, the stairs on this machine go up and down as well as side to side, for a more complete workout. I was sold on the machine right away. Read more »
Reduce Stress by Eating
In the last section we read about emotional eating and i was interested on how to find foods that could replace the unhealthy foods we choose to eat when we are stressed. Here are a few healthy choices that I found on MSN.com.

I choose natural vitamins over supplements
There are single supplements and multi-vitamins. The debate goes on to which ones the body will breakdown distributing nutritional value and which ones do not. They both claim to be beneficial. I grew up taking the individual supplements and then later went on to try the ever so convenient multi-vitamin. Read more »
Stress Vulnerability Questionnaire
I completed the stress vulnerability questionnaire on page 391 of our text book, and I rated as highly vulnerable to stress. Some items that damaged my score were my lacking of "religious beliefs" that "provide strength and guidance in my life", not enjoying my job, and not having a network of friends that I spend significant time with.
I believe this is well rounded with questions relevant to overall wellness, and these results are a little scarey to me.
being motivated
It is not enough just to think about being healhty and getting fit, a person must be motivated. Just looking ina mirror at your body and saying, "Wow, I need to get into shape so I can look better." is not much of a motivation for most people. Other people may find this as a motivator. So what should motivate us to be healther and what can we do to stay motivated? First of all I should have a goal, if I say I would like to get fit or I am going to try a new exercise regime, this is not sending a strong message to my subconscious mind. In fact, it really is saying that I am not really serious in making the change. So I should try to be more specific. Read more »
Determining Cardiovascular Intensity
220-23=MHR of 197
I had a resting heart rate of 54
197-54=HHR of 143
60% TI= 143 x .60+RHR=140 bpm
85%TI= 143 x .85+RHR=175 bpm
Polar Heart Rate Monitor.
I have a polar heart rate monitor that I don't use to often. I see it as helpful in some aspects but in other aspects I can see it as desturbing and something that gets in your way of working out.
This device always seems to be helpful to me when I am starting a new workout activity or I am doing something I have not done before and I am trying to see what zone I am comfortable in or I am trying to see how high I can get till I am at my limits. I only wear my device during these times because of other reasons. Read more »
Prohormone Ban/ Health Topic
With the issuance of the final rle the Deputy Administrator classifies the following three steroids as anabolic steroids. Boldione, desoxymethyltestosterone and 19-nor-4-9 androstadienedione. These steroids and their salts, esters and ethers are schedule III control substances. They will now be controlled by the CSA. These products are products such as phen, tren, and bold products. All these products are is a "water down" low class steroid that they say does not have all of the effects that steroids have on a person. Read more »
Great Class/ Improvements on fitness test
I believe this class has helped me make some remarkable changes in my life. It has inspired me to do the healthier things in life and persue being a healthy individual. At the beginning of the class I was very out of shape all I had been doing was working out lifting weights all the time and was not worried about diet or cardio. After reading the book and looking on some important websites it made me realize no matter how many times I worked out lifting weights everyday it wasnt helping me get any healthier. Maybe I was working on my muscles and not lossing them on a daily basis but I was not working on becoming a healthier more fit person. After reading and getting into the class I started running and changed my diet. I know eat more nutritious meals Read more »

Wellness Lifestyle Questionare
I took the wellness lifestyle questionare in chapter 1 because I really liked the outlook on it. It made me realize that even though I was excersing on a daily basis that I was also doing some other things wrong. My eating habits were bad, I was not eating 3 times a day and when I did eat I probably over indulged myself. I was eating foods high in saturated fat which is unhealthy and I was drinking alcohol on a often basis which also was not a good idea, because all I was doing was killing the positive effects of what my ultimate goal was. To me it made me see that I was really working out for no reason if I was going to continue doing some of the things I had been doing. It also made me realize that lifting weights was not the only thing I should be doing Read more »

mypyramid.gov VS. Diet Analysis Plus.
During this term I have had the opportunity to analyze my diet twice; once for Nutrition using the Diet Analysis Plus (DA+) software that came with my text, and another for this class using mypyramid.gov. I will talk about the pros and cons of both and compare and contrast the differences between the two diet analysis methods.
The biggest difference in the two programs is that mypyramid.gov is a free program and Diet analysis came with my $160 nutrition text. The Diet Analysis program is, however, on all of the computers in the learning center computer lab. Read more »
Weight Loss: Emotional Eating
Emotional eating is when a large quantity of food is consumed in response to feelings instead of hunger. The type of food typically ingested is junk foods which are commonly referred to as "comfort foods". It is estimated that roughly 75% of overeating is caused by emotions including stress, sadness, depression, anxiety etc. It is not secrete that food can bring some form of comfort or happiness. However, this is usually only the case for short-term. The problem with emotional eating is that it prevents an individual from learning the skills, abilities, and strategies needed to effectively and efficiently resolve the emotional distress that one is going through at any given time. Fitness Goals 2010 -- Revisited.
At the beginning of the term, students were required to set goals. I began this assignment by creating a table which listed my social goals, physical goals and nutritional goals. With that in mind, I reviewed both short term and long term goals today as this is the last day of class. Also, the instructor requested at the beginning of the term that we try something "new." While I am not the athletic type, I have always been involved in dance as this has always been my passion. Fit TV provided a "Shimmy" class, which is related to belly dancing. I used the Shimmy class to stretch on April 19, 2010 and April 22, 2010. The "Shimmy" program incorporates many type of movements. Those performed were called "hip-pi Read more »
great motivation/class
great class!
With life being so crazy, it was nice to be able to focus on my own training routines.
Iam by no means in top shape, in fact this class has helped me realize that my fitness level is poor. Being a personal trainer, I am blessed to be able to help others achieve their fitness goals but somewhere in the process,I Stoped focusing on myself.
Sometimes , It takes something to turn the light on. like seeing a bad picture, I now see myself in the true light.
It may sound silly but, I feel refocused to reach new all time highs in all areas of life.
Thanks and good luck-
Stress Eating
I am a stress eater. I eat ice cream, chocolate, cookies, potato chips, and pizza- a lot of it- when I feel like the overwhelming list of issues is going to smother me. It is always at it’s worst during midterms and finals. I want to be a healthy person, so why do I do this to myself? It’s terrible, I usually feel worse about myself by eating all of it (even though I enjoyed every morsel), and vow to never do it again. Know what I have in my kitchen? The freezer is stocked with pizza and ice cream, there are potato chips in my cupboard, and I have Dove dark chocolate strategically placed in my backpack, purse, desk, and kitchen. How in the world can I promote living a healthy life with this out of control secret? How do I even b Read more »
Wellness Lifestyle Questionnaire Reviewed
Per Kimberly’s suggestion, I retook the Wellness Lifestyle Questionnaire in Chapter 1, just to see if anything had changed. It had! Originally, I hadn’t realized that my weight training regimen was severely lacking. (I didn’t like weights, so I didn’t use them.) With that in mind (and the requirements of this course), I started looking for weight bearing exercises that I would like and stick to. Now, I am doing strengthening exercises 2-3 days a week and can see and feel the difference! I love feeling better! Read more »
