Fitness Media: Killer bodyweight workout

This is a very good, quick bodyweight workout. It only takes a few minutes depending on how many reps you do. it is a full body workout which is what I really like about it. You get full body in just three exercises, which is very nice for those people on the run and in a hurry.

Nutrition

Reading through the chapter on nutrition brings up concerns about my eight year old son’s nutritional intake.  He has celiac disease:

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/celiac-disease/DS00319 (defined).

This simply put means he cannot eat anything with gluten in it.  This poses a problem in the whole grain department, because gluten is in wheat, barley, and rye.  There are alternatives like pasta made from corn and rice or breads and flour made from corn and rice, but if anyone has ever tried these products they do not taste very good and getting an eight year old to eat it is difficult and generally impossible.  Read more »

Zumba Dancing your Calories Away

I chose this video from YouTube because it gives a depiction that any person can join into Zumba. Throughout the video you see all body shapes, men and women, even a pregnant woman, participating. My local YMCA just started offering this class through their Healthy Lifestyles program. I have participated once and thought it was awesome. It gets your heart pumping, makes you exert muscles that you didn't even know you had, and you are working out while you have fun. I personally has a blast joining in and trying it out. Once particular website, www.zumbaexercise.org, estimates that you burn between 500-1000 calories per 1 hour session. Read more »

A Healthier Option

In today’s world there are many concerns over food production and food safety like; genetically modified crops, pesticides, herbicides, hormones, and recalls of contaminated food.

In an effort to eat healthier I started growing my own fruits and vegetables in my backyard. Initially it was quite overwhelming but it is actually much simpler than it sounds. I started out with the easier vegetables to grow; tomatoes, radishes, peppers and carrots. After I was comfortable growing them I moved on to onions, egg plant, lettuce, spinach, strawberries, and potatoes. Read more »

Needs Assessment

To improve the nutritional value of the school breakfast and lunch menu at Greenwood Elementary school children ages 5 years to 11 years old by September of 2011. We will begin our plan in the beginning of September of 2010.  The objective of the plan is to decrease high fat, calorie, and processed foods from the school breakfast and lunch menus and increase healthier foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables. In the process of the plan I will be educating the children to make better food choices now and throughout their lives. The Elementary school breakfast and lunch menus need to meet the Dietary Guidelines and Federal Regulations.

Hot Topic: McMinnville High School

I found this article today and it definitely hit home because I am a high school football coach. We as coaches have no idea what kind of supplements our players are taking if they are taking any.   Read more »

question for Professor Sather

I was wondering why I cannot review my quiz answers once I take a quiz in Moodle.  It would be nice to know which questions I am missing. Thank you.

My Estimated Energy Requirement

When I used the formula provided in the text used in Dr. Brogg's personal health class, I ended up with some absurd number just over 6,000 - and was amazed that, in order to function, the text was essentially telling me to eat non-stop during all waking hours.  Dr. Brogg confirmed the calculation, though, she did point out that it was a very loose estimate... thankfully, I hadn't changed my diet yet ;)

The formula for calculating EER for men is: EER=662-(9.53 x Age)+(15.91 x body weight in kilograms)+(539 x height)

So... here goes nothing:

EER = 662 - (9.53 x 27) + (15.92 x 122.73) + (539 x 1.6) ==>
EER = 662 - 257.31 + 1953.86 + 862.4 ==>
EER = 3220 Read more »

Nutritional Analysis

Media File:

Attached is a nutritional analysis completed in January of this year in Dr. Oja's nutrition class.  Whether you're studying HWS/PES or not, I recommend her class if you want to learn about nutrition, health, and weight loss.  With the help of the software used in Dr. Oja's class, and the material presented, I was able to modify my diet to limit carbohydrates, increase protein (while keeping fats at reasonable levels), and lose weight.

I started her course shortly after I moved to Phoenix from Ohio (I moved August 24, 2009, started the course January 2010) and have, since Dr. Oja's course, lost 85 pounds... which is nearly half-way to my weight-loss goal. Read more »

Disabilities

I had originally intended to do a massive essay of sorts on the construct of disability from a psychosocial perspective and to analyze the political and economic factors which promote disability - but then I realized that it's pretty likely nobody here is nearly as interested in it as I am (my capstone is on the impact of personally and socially perceived abilities upon functional limitations... basically, how do what you and I think about what I can do, change what I can do)... that being said, I've just got a few things to say... I'll try to keep it  short.

Diet and nutrition websites

I am a member of our company's Health and Wellness Committee.  One of the programs that we have is a weight loss challenge that usually lasts approximately 3 months.  It works like this: A person pays $1 to join and $1 a week to weigh in. Then if the person gains any weight, they must pay $1 a pound.  At the end of the 3 month period, the top male and female 'losers' split the pot of money collected. One of the biggest issues I have trying to motivate people is finding an easy and FREE way for them to track calories in and calories out, whether it is through a website or a exercise and meal log.  If anyone has any websites that they have used or any attachments that I would be able to print off and hand out to my participants, please attach or revise. Flexitarianism

When people hear the word vegetarian they seem to wrinkle up their nose and look confused. They tend to ask “why?” thinking it is all about the animals. It is not always the case. There are many different types of vegetarian diets; vegans, ovovegetarians, lactovegetarians, ovolactovegetarians, semivegetarians.

Vegans—eat no products that come from animals including eggs and dariy.

Ovovegetarians—eat no dairy, but will include eggs in their diet.

Lactovegetarians— eat dairy products.

Ovolactovegetarians—eat dairy products and eggs.

Semivegetarians—eat dairy, eggs, fish, and poultry. Read more »

10th Week and Fitness Testing

At this point, you should all be done with the Nutrition Analysis Project. Next week (10th week), it is important to schedule to do the fitness re-testing. Make sure you use the same tests as you did at the beginning of the term, so that you have a good comparison of values. I look forward to seeing how you do on these tests. Exam 3 is already available, in case you want to take it early. Otherwise, take it by the end of 10th week and that will wrap-up the class!

America's Fight Against Obesity

I recently read an interesting article about the concern over the increasing numbers of obesity in the Unites States. The article was titled “Bigger Bottoms Means Bigger Theatre Seats” and regarded how seats in theatres are being expanded to a 22-inch average. In the past 20 years, the seats in theatres have grown an inch to accommodate the “extra pounds”.

This is a good indication that obesity has increased dramatically over the past few years, as a direct result of today’s lifestyle that includes poor dietary habits and inactivity. They are hoping that in 20 years from now the seats will stay the same or perhaps get smaller, as the public become more educated about the significance of healthy lifestyles and regular exercise. A different aspect

Today I was thinking about a different aspect of well being. While in this class we have been mostly focusing in the physical well being aspect such as how to keep our heart healthy, how to be in great shape, how to prevent diseases and keep our body fit. The aspect that I am talking about today is inner satisfaction. There are certain things in life that we cannot change such as our identity as a person who we are, in which country we were born, the color of our skin( unless we go extreme),  to many cases the disease we get as a result of genetics. RamDev- Yoga Guru of India

Ram Dev is one of the greatest alive Yoga Gurus in the Indian Sub continent. He is widely popular among the normal people along with some celebrities in the Indian Sub continent. One of the major aspect that I like about Ram Dev is that he has modified the traditional Yoga and made it appealing to the younger and middle aged audience.

I found this video online and would like to share it with you.

Recommendations from “The Weight Loss Cure”

     The author, Kevin Trudeau, advocates that obesity is from an abnormal hypothalamus gland creating a low metabolism.  With a low metabolism, a person is unable to burn all the food one consumes during the day.  Many factors contribute to an abnormal hypothalamus, such as genetics, clogged colon, food additives, parasites, “yo-yo diets”, growth hormones, lack of sun, eating microwave or genetically modified foods, and many other factors.  It is important to reset the abnormal hypothalamus in order to achieve a higher metabolism and loss of weight and can be accomplished in four major phases.  While the author is a natural entrepreneur, I highly recommend his website for further discussion and information:  Read more »

Equipment Review Assignment - New Balance N5 Heart Rate Monitor

Media File:

My equipment review is on the New Balance N5 Heart Rate Monitor.  Attached is a picture of it.

I bought this heart rate monitor wrist watch a year or so ago at a consignment store for $7.00.  I wrote New Balance to see if I could purchase the chest strap and they sent me one for free. Once I replaced the batteries it was ready to use but I rarely used it until recently.

I put the chest strap and wrist watch on and used it for my warm up, workout and cool down on Friday, July 30th. Read more »
