Fitness Testing Due This Week
Fitness testing is the focus this week, as everything should be done by the end of the week. After the fitness testing, you can turn your focus to the upcoming topics listed in the Plan section of the Learning Guide. I will be evaluating your work in more detail shortly, so look for an email to come through with feedback and grades. The Application Rubric contains the criteria that is used, which is linked in the Guidelines section to the right.
Jobs for PE teachers
I know it is hard times for PE teachers and they are being cut. In my opinion this is just as important as math or science it helps kids function more effectively, healthier, learn better and more easily and much more. I am working on an idea of having a private company that hires out PE teachers. Right now a lot of un qualified teachers are teaching PE and doing it incorrectly and dangerously. My goal is to find a way to set-up contracts through the schools and have a company provide them. The teachers would come with all the supplies and the education, maybe even train other teachers to help! I am still working on it but does anyone have any ideas to get this started? Or any reason why I shouldn't, one i recently heard was that the union would get very angry. Any help is great!
Online database
I tried attaching a .txt but it said it wasn't accepted in the paper or media section :(

As Fall Sports Start
As fall sports start, it is important to follow your body. If you feel sick stop, most importantly watch out for the dreaded dehydration. The following Article is a great reference and has reasons on why we must watch out intently for dehydration. Read more »
Culture of Change
For my entire life I have been a fitness seeker. I read, learn and do new fitness concepts. The latest craze in the fitness culture is “Caveman” work outs. I was reading an article the other day in Fitness Rx (a fitness magazine) and I started thinking about Chapter 5 and the Genes, and Culture that was discussed. Read more »
Diet and nutrition websites
I am a member of our company's Health and Wellness Committee. One of the programs that we have is a weight loss challenge that usually lasts approximately 3 months. It works like this: A person pays $1 to join and $1 a week to weigh in. Then if the person gains any weight, they must pay $1 a pound. At the end of the 3 month period, the top male and female 'losers' split the pot of money collected. One of the biggest issues I have trying to motivate people is finding an easy and FREE way for them to track calories in and calories out, whether it is through a website or a exercise and meal log. If anyone has any websites that they have used or any attachments that I would be able to print off and hand out to my participants, please attach or revise. Read more »

Staying Motivated
Motivation can be a challenge. We become motivated for many different reasons. Some of the catalysts are: "I want to look better, feel better, know more, be better, run further, or sit up quicker than I have in the past". Often we have an impressive start. We let everyone around us know our intentions with loud fan-fare. If it's a diet, we explain it to everyone we encounter. If it is a new sport, we explicate that too. We jump in with many expectations, but sometimes it is hard to hold the momentum. When our interest starts to wane, or life's challenges get in the way of carrying the initial drive, this is where we have to look deep inside and grab hold of something/someone to help us through the rough spell. By asking for help from Read more »

Research Articles from the Database
While searching the EOU Library database, I found some research articles which were interesting to me. I have included the information as a PDF file.
PE class and health education combined?
After experiencing many PE classes in my past and thinking about how these classes and experiences could have been more beneficial, I was curious about something. It is know that many Physical Education classes do not educate, advise or instruct kids about healthy behaviors that incorporate health, nutrition and wellness principles. I am not saying every PE class is like this, but a majority of PE classes touch briefly on the topics listed about and really revolve around activity (which is great and essential). These activities involve stretching, fundamental games, sport education and fitness tests. These are all great for our youth of today. Read more »
10th and Final Week of Class
We're nearing the completion of this class. I've seen some good work presented this term. Next week (10th week) is the last week to submit work for the class. Make sure to schedule any final work you would like to complete as outlined in the Apply section of the learning guide. Continue to provide quality comments on others' posts through the week. Also, it is important to contribute a collaboration (like Amanda's), and then move it through to the complete state. Read more »
Master's help
I recently found something that aided me in finding the right master's program and to find out exactly what to do. I hope this helps at least the people in Oregon :)

Childhood Obesity
On average, students spend over 1000 hours in school per year. Schools are second only to parents and peers in their influence on student’s habits. Whether they like it or not, schools share a responsibility in the fight against childhood obesity. Children and adolescents who are overweight by age eight are 80 percent more likely to become overweight or obese as adults. “More than 9 million U.S. children ages 6 to 19 are overweight, according to the 2006 Shape of the Nation Report by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education and the American Heart Association.” (Robertson & Spivak, 2006). A measurement called percentile of Body Mass Index (BMI) is used to identify overweight and obesity in children and adults. Read more »
Rubric Collaboration - Please EDIT or ADD COMMENTS!
One thing that I am really into is RUBRICS!! Over the past few years my school district has been enforcing the use of rubrics in the classroom for EVERYTHING you do. I really have found this to be helpful to me and my students. I think once I complete my PE degree I am going to have to start working on some of these rubrics because they can really help simplify. So with that idea I thought this would be a great collaboration project. I am going to insert a great rubric I came up with and I would like to get your opinions on how this rubric can be modified or just comments on what you like about it. Feel free to edit the document or add a new document. After reading threw this rubric I really liked the content but thought it might be to hard to use this every class with every student. Entire Class Nutrition
After reading many "mission and goal" statements from most you in this course, I noticed that there were consistent remarks and comments regarding personal health and wellness. Some of us stated that we want to continue our healthy lifestyles and many of us stated that we want to continue bettering our healthy lifestyles and increase our physical activity etc. No matter what all of our short term and long term goals were, the majority had health and wellness was plugged into the equation.
