EXS 311 Exercise Psychology
Final Paper
Starting out in completion of this paper, I wanted to look at something that I felt was relevant to my current situation professionally. As I researched my selected topic of Team Cohesion, I struggled to find articles that I felt were helpful because I wanted to use this assignment to improve my understanding of the topic. Since then, I have found that I enjoy the overall topic of Exercise/Sport Psychology and have done a little research and thinking about pursuing a PhD in the subject. Read more »
Hoosiers Movie Review
Over the weekend I watched one of my favorite movies of all time, Hoosiers starring Gene Hackman. It is about a basketball coach who arrives in a small town called in Indiana. The coach had been fired from a previous job for striking a player, and is a very strict which does not sit well with his current team. He ends up kicking one of the better players off the team for not following the team rules, and the best player in town has refused to come out for the team. The small town is not happy with the style of play that the new coach teaches and attempts to fire him in a tow meeting. At this meeting the best player in town, Jimmy, announces he will play this season but only if the coach stays. Read more »
COACH CARTER MOVIE REVIEW
Coach Carter depicts the story of a basketball coach's mission to remake a struggling high school athletic team at Richmond High, where many conflicts exist including lack of discipline, acts of aggression, physical assault, family dysfunction, lack of cohesion, use of inappropriate language, lack of adherence to rules, poor academic success, and yet the players possess a dynamic love for the game and each athlete can identify with the need to be a part of something bigger and better than the streets they live on. This becomes a driving force in Carter’s attempt to encourage and teach the Richmond basketball team value, hard work, discipline, courage, how to overcome adversity and find something pure and empowering in becoming a successful athlete, student, and team with a mission Read more »
How I will apply Sport Psychology
I am pursuing a special education endorsement in order to teach high school special education. I am currently coaching junior varsity basketball at the local high school. In the future I would like to become the head coach at the high school that is currently being built in town. I believe that this class will help me become a better teacher and coach. By understanding a individuals’ personality better, I will be able to relate to my students and players more closely. Not only will this knowledge enhance my connection with young people, my rapport with parents will also be improved.
Thought Stopping
Situation: It’s Its Redmond vs. Tualatin in the semi-finals in the men’s basketball state tournament at the Rose Garden. The score is 88-86 Tualatin with 14 ticks left on the clock. I get fouled with 4 seconds on the clock. Tualatin calls timeout to ice me. Negative self-statements I make during the time-out: If I miss, we most likely lose. My whole family is watching the game. My heart is pounding. My team is depending on me. Cue for stopping my negative thoughts “Relax” Four realistic, positive, and constructive self-statements that I can use to replace the negative thoughts.
Exercise Adherence
According to Weinberg and Gould, half of all exercisers drop out of their program within the first 6 months(Weinberg & Gould, 2005). Here at Gilbertson Health we have designed a plan for increasing adherence to our exercise programs. The goal of this exercise plan is to help the individual develop 100% self-efficacy in an ability to stay active for life. In order to achieve our goal, we are going to focus on two specific aspects of our exercise plans. The first change will be to get to know our participants individually so we can develop the right plan for them. Another adjustment will be to establish a youth exercise program in schools and community centers.

Aggression in Sport
In 2001, during an NFL match-up between the New Orleans Saints and the New York Jets an episode of aggression was displayed late in the fourth quarter. With the Saints trailing 16-9, Saints quarterback Aaron Brooks scrambled and was tackled at the six yard line by Jets defender Damien Robison. This was no ordinary tackle though, Robison grabbed Brooks facemask and deliberately forced it backwards. This was an aggressive play because Robison showed “behavior directed toward the goal of harming or injuring another living being” (Gould & Weinberg, p 534). In an attempt to get even with the Jets defender or maybe to protect his QB, Kyle Turley of the Jets proceeded to lift Robinson’s facemask in order to remove him from Brooks. Read more »
Aggression in Sports
It took me a while to find this video, but on February 21, 2000 hockey player Marty McSorley was playing for the Boston Bruins and struck Donald Brashear in the head with his stick with 3 seconds left in the game. As Brashear fell to the ice and hit his head he lost consciousness and suffered a grade 3 concussion. This resulted in a year suspension from the ice from the NHL, and an assault conviction and 18 months probation. This was only the second conviction related to an on ice attack, the first occurring in 1988. McSorley never played in the NHL again, but did however become the head coach of an American Hockey League team from 2002-2004. Read more »
Thought Stopping-Concentration
I have recently started playing golf, and I have never played a sport that I have so much fun doing, but can get me so frustrated. I drive the ball ok, I actually putt ok, but I can not chip to save my life!
Describe the situation:
Chipping onto a green from 5 yards out.
Identify the negative self statements you make to yourself:
- Don't hit the ball too hard
- Don't hit the ball to lightly
- I hope i don't miss the ball
- Don't chop at the ball
- Why did I start playing this game?!?
Signify a term to stop your negative thoughts:
"STOP" Read more »
Effective Communication
Here is a list of techniques or approaches I attempt to use when communicating with my players.
1. Stay focused- It's important to only bring up current topics, and discuss only one issue at a time. Especially in the age group that I'm involved in, focusing on multiple issues often confuses the athletes and in turn nothing gets accomplished. If it's a discipline matter, I try to only discuss the current situation and not bring up old items. Read more »

Communication
My experience as a coach has been in youth ice hockey. I started with the mini-mites and worked my way up to peewee level. As I moved throught the different skill levels I found that communication changed as well. In the mini-mites and learn to play levels communication was more designed around consistant positive reinforcement. There was never a bad moment at this level. As a coach I needed to ensure that I was building not only a strong fundamental basis of the skills needed for the game but also a love for the game. The kids needed to be built up consistantly. To accomplish this focused on teaching the fundamental skills and played alot of games. Some were to develop individual skills, such as Freeze Tag. This game not only assist Read more »
Performance anxiety
When researching ways to deal with performance anxiety, I found that this type of anxiety (aka choking) was related to two factors on game day, one having an audience and also having extremely high expectation of success. The thoughts that a player has going into competition can be controlled through a few different methods. The important thing is to focus on the task at hand as opposed to the outcome. Here a few things to focus on before a competition.
1. Allow the players to understand pre-grame jitters are common. Notice the energy but don't focus on it. Read more »
How I will use Sport Psychology
I hope to use sport psychology the most in my continuation of coaching high school girls basketball. I have been coaching for 6 seasons, and hope to coach for a total of 25 years. In the two previous programs I have coached at, the biggest factor was self confidence. Confidence has an effect on so many aspects of the game, the amount of effort, the out come on goals, and on general performance, it is the most important attribute a player needs in order to compete. As a coach it is finding that fine line between being overconfident, and under-confident that allows our players to perform at their best. Read more »

COMMUNICATION
Communication is the key to success in coaching and playing team sports. I likely overemphasize this point with my players and parents because I find it to be so crucial to making any progress toward goals or in building team cohesion and in having an understanding of my expectations.
Without communication you may become unaware of team dynamics and individual goals, frustrations, injuries, illnesses, struggles, personal triumphs, etc. It is essential for the proper organization of any practice or event. Failure to communicate effectively can be disastrous!
There are several techniques I use in communicating with my volleyball athletes which include both verbal and non-verbal messages. Five of those techniques are as follows: Read more »
