Discipline Project

Discipline Project

This discipline project is designed for a Middle School PE class.  It will be something which is presented to the administration and staff teams so they are aware of the policies and procedure in physical education.  Some of the disciplinary procedures are associated with the school wide disciplinary policy.  A mission statement has also been designed so students know the expectations of the class and ways to be successful.

DISCIPLINE PROJECT

PERSONAL PRINCIPALS

As a coach and role model for young women, I find it imperative to behave in such a manner that is viewed as morally and ethically upstanding at all times.  I will obey the laws of the land, make every effort to provide a safe and emotionally healthy environment for those I teach, and encourage character building, athleticism and personal growth in young women athletes.  I am a human that is capable of making mistakes.  In order to reduce human error, I am dedicated to continued education and I personally advocate for open and frequent communication.  A coach who is aware can take action to instigate positive change. INVENTORY PROJECT

The HS volleyball inventory project I completed is typically performed by the Athletic Director (AD) at the school where I coach.  When I contacted the AD to get a baseline inventory, he did not have an electronic copy of the document available to me, so I started the project from scratch.  This was truly a helpful project for me, as I believe it will help me to be more prepared prior to my season starting this coming Fall.  I will be able to make timely orders, track when the orders were made and to whom, and have supplies present when the season begins.  Better organization will allow me to be focused on other priorities during the pre-season.  In addition, it will be nice to have a net system (i.e.: working antennae holders) in place Read more »

SERVICE LEARNING

PES 470

Recently, I volunteered at Eastern Oregon University’s (EOU) last home basketball games to perform my administrative service learning project.  I worked behind the scenes alongside Barrett Henderson, Sports Information and Marketing Director for EOU.  The night’s games included a student senior recognition and “Pink Night” event for breast cancer awareness.  Proceeds of the Pink Night event will go to the Union County Center for Human Development for free mammogram services to women who cannot afford them. Performance Evaluation

The performance evaluation is for a head coach for any type of sports at the high school level.  The evaluation is a formal structured system which measures the coach on a rating scale basis.  This particular evaluation rates the coach on excellent, good, average, below average and poor.  Although there are numbers listed under each category, this evaluation does affiliate a total score with the success of the coach being evaluated.  The number is a way for the evaluator to indicate which rating scale they fall under.  Read more »

Equipment Inventory

This equipment inventory was conducted at a Middle School to help the teachers determine the types of equipment they had, total amounts of equipment and the condition it was in.  Item numbers were not included because equipment is ordered from a variety of companies.  The project will be very useful to the school so they have a base to work with.

Intramural Project

I put together a 6 team double-round robin intramural volleyball project to include rules, schedule, and championship bracket.  The final project is attached in pdf format.

Here's the audio of Steven Crugan and my interview with Rob Cashell, EOU 's athletic director. I had transcripted the interview earlier in the term and had a hard time figuring out how to do the audio. But here it is! :)

RISK MANAGEMENT PROJECT

The fitness center I reviewed included a cardio area (i.e.: electronic cardio equipment, bicycles, a rowing machine, etc.), universal and free weight areas, as well as an abdominal workout area and an indoor rubberized straight track for miscellaneous work. The following twenty items may pose risk to the patrons of the fitness center. Read more »

Risk Management Project

I examined a fitness center which included a cardio area, weight area and locker room. The following are twenty items that pose various degrees of risk to the patrons of the fitness center.

1.)    There were no floor mats when you walked in the entrance doors to the facility.  Mats need to be in place to allow patrons to wipe off their feet from water and/ or dirt so that what is outdoors is not tracked through the facility creating health and safety hazards for its users.

2.)    One of the entrance doors did not work.  All doors, particularly entrance doors should be in proper working function, especially in the case of an emergency. Read more »

Proposal Schedule

Next week is the time frame to present proposals. These can be presented any time during the week, but they all should be in by the end of the week (Saturday). Don't forget that each proposal must have a "presentation" which links to the "paper." The presentation is what everyone will read first. Once proposals start posting, discussion surrounding them should ensue. Everyone should view the presentations and ask questions of the presenter as comments on the presentation. Presenters should check their presentations often and answer questions. This should continue through the next week until Exam 2 is posted, which marks the end of the term.

Seeking Student Reviewers from EOU for WSKW

I'm still looking for a couple students to review papers for the WSKW Conference Peavy Papers. Participating in this provides several benefits beyond the learning experience you will get in a peer-review process. It will be good to include on your vita (i.e. resume) and it can acquaint you with someone who may someday hire you. Preferably, you will have some experience presenting papers or projects in a professional venue such as EOU Spring Symposium or a class. The process will include an online orientation session for reviewers presented by Eastern Washington University and then reviewing of some submitted papers later this spring. Read more »

Volunteer Experience

This isn't an administrative experience, but on Thursday February 18th I volunteered in the concession stand at Umatilla HS where the Big Sky district tournament was held.  I was in charge of the popcorn, and let me tell you it is crazy.  At first I thought this was a good job for me, my favorite snack at a basketball game is a popcorn and soda.  I actually rate all the venues in our league on the quality of their popcorn, so I kind of consider myself a popcorn connoisseur.  After doing this job I have a new appreciation for the person who runs the popcorn machine.  For one it is extremely hot next to that machine, and also you don't get gloves so I have all sorts of little burns on my hands and arms from reaching inside to fill the thing up.  I also l Read more »

Shadowing Robin Sullivan Tournament Manager and Secretary of the Gallatin Association of the USBC.

I have known Robin for many years now.  She is one of the many people here in Bozeman that has had an enormous hand in keeping the Bowling Association in Bozeman going.  She is the Secretary of the Gallatin Association of the USBC here in Bozeman, MT.  She is also the Tournament Manager as well.  I spent a few minutes talking with her about what she (as well as the rest of the association) must complete before a tournament can be held.  The association meets to discuss and approve: Read more »

Double Round Robin + Playoffs

Sports management in USA hockey vs. Canadian hockey

My 16 years old son plays on an 18AA ice hockey team in Southern California.  Which means that we travel all over California every weekend and pray that he doesn't get hurt or break a $250-$300 stick.  (We are averaging 3-5 sticks a season!)  On average we pay about $4000-$5000 per season (August-March).  That price includes games, tournaments, practices, uniforms, equipment and travel expenses (for the whole family).  Read more »

Copyright in Education

Rosette posted a good topic on copyright issues and lesson plans for another class she is taking currently. It directly relates to the legal topic that we are covering in this class. Please take a look at it here. You can comment here or directly on it in the other class.

My Blog

I am just going to go ahead and post the info for my blog which I recently started. It actually has nothing to do with Sport Management instead it is all about a passion of mine (which is saving money / couponing / looking for deals) and my family. I checked with Mr. Sather however and he said this was ok. The second portion of this was to include an update to a Wiki posting and though I updated the definition of catalina (which is also a coupon that prints out at a store, attached to a cash register, that triggers the coupon when you purchase certain selected items) I will be updating a sport related item in the next couple days and then post that as well on here. I just am trying to get a jump start on this project by getting this part submitted first. Read more »

Proposal

After much thought and deliberation I am changing my proposal to one that fits better with the guidelines. I am proposing that Clevaland high school purchase a large school bus for the athletic program. Due to budget cuts in Portland Public Schools there is not funding for transportation to and from any games at any level except for a once a month bus per sport that is allowed. The school currently owns 2 mini vans for all athletic and extra cirricular activities and this is not sufficent for the amount of students and athletes that are in need of this service.
