My Day Out At The Cricket
For most of today, I devoted my time to professional development in the form of attending "the cricket." The match was the Prime Minister's XI vs West Indies, held at our local venue in Canberra called Manuka Oval. The home team was literally the Prime Minister's 11, a section of players by the Prime Minister himself and they were playing against the West Indies cricketers. The PM XI is an annual match that is played against a prominent team from another nation here in Australia's Capital.

Disc Sports Unit Plan
I have started a 'work-in-progress' unit plan for disc sports that I will be adding to in the coming days. The unit plan is for 5th graders that will begin with the basics of throwing/catching a disc (Frisbee), and then building these skills into teaching students disc golf and ultimate Frisbee. Disc golf will be introduced first, as this sport will give the students a fun way to practice throwing a Frisbee for both accuracy and distance. Ultimate Frisbee will be taught next, as it enhances the skills required for throwing a Frisbee and adds the different methods for catching a Frisbee into mix.

Quick Start Tennis
Recently, I attended a workshop for the USTA’s Quick Start Program. The program is designed to introduce the game of tennis to children up to age 10 (although, the activities are a lot of fun for adults, too). The program’s emphasis is to get the kids playing tennis without a lot of time spent teaching basic skills. Actually, basic skills are important, but are taught in a way that games are built into the instruction process, so kids learn the backhand, forehand, volley, serve, etc. while playing. The following link provides instruction in teaching lesson for the Quick Start Program:

Teaching #1 Lesson Plan
I had a chance to do my first teaching with a home school co-op. This was particularly exciting for me, because growing up I was homeschooled and involved in different co-ops, and I always felt that the lack of physical education offered through the co-op was unfair and pretty ridiculous. I was giving the change to take the students for a thirty minute time period, and do this twice that week. (Tuesday and Thursday) I decided to teach speedball to the students. Considering the amount of skills and rules needed to be taught in order to play the game, I chose to teach the skills on Tuesday with them and then let them play speedball on Thursday. The following is the lesson plan that I used with the students.

Ultimate Frisbee Lesson Plan: Great for rainy days!
Objective: Students try to advance the Frisbee past the end line of the basketball court by throwing it to their teammates.
Start with two teams (approximately 12 on a team) at either end of the gymnasium. The team members will throw the Frisbee to their team members with the goal of getting the Frisbee down the court and across the baseline of the gym.
As the game advances, team members will scatter all over the floor (some will stay back to guard their goal, and some will be on the offense trying to make goals). Read more »
Analysis of Teaching (#4)
The class came in and put their shoes on quickly and we were able to start right away. We used a new rule where one whistle meant freeze and two whistles meant go. I forgot once to whistle twice and they were quick to let me know that I forgot haha. We had all the kids gather in the circle while I gave directions for the first game. They spread out throughout the court and we played a game where they had to pretend to be whatever I told them to be. They absolutely loved this game. I was really scared that they were not going to like it at all, but they proved me wrong :) Their teacher was laughing the whole time as they were pretending to do some of the movements. I think when I told them to pretend to be a snake this was th Read more »
