No Child Left Behind Act
This Act of Congress was a reauthorization and major revision of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965. It was originally proposed by President George W. Bush and required states to develop assesments (annual tests) in basic skills to be given to all students grades 3-8 if those states are to receive federal funding for education. This Act relates to all aspects of a child's educational success, including that of physical education. This Act is working to make physical education a priority by holding schools accountable for moving toward a national goal for physical education. Modifications are in the works to strengthen physical education programs across the country to battle our nations overwhelmingly obese children by implementing national standards for time spent in the gym, ensuring every child has a fair chance at health as he/she does at learning.
