Rejuvenating Your Majors' Club

Project Purpose: Re-form the physical activity and health majors' club at Eastern Oregon University. The club should include both on-campus and online students, since there are a substantial number of majors in both venues.

Background: The physical education majors club existed in the past, and still exists on paper today. In the 1990s, the club was active at sporting events to raise money for their functions. They served a major role as the "Quinn Crazies" and collected money in fundraising efforts at the games. The club eventually diminished and is currently inactive.

Discussion: This is project is presented as a collaboration, so that anyone can edit the document to formalize the plan. This was discussed in PES131 class in La Grande and it was clear that the club was a good idea and should be pursued.

Call: Below is the start to a plan. Please edit directly and provide comments under the discussion tab above. This is being presented to a few different "key" classes for discussion and contributions.

Advantages of a majors club:

  • Voice for issues related to curriculum, requirements, and equipment/supplies for majors.
  • Lobbying efforts for university equipment and facility decisions.
  • Opportunity for leadership experiences for professional practice and resume building.
  • Fund raising and organizing trips to professional conferences.
  • For athletes to have additional support and encouragement during events.
  • To create fitness classes and community activities promoting healthly living.

Name Ideas: "club" may not be good to have in the name.

  • University Physical Activity & Health Organization (to get things started)
  • EOU Physical Activity & Health Advocates
  • Eastern Oregon University Athletic Club

Our Mission Statement (open to revision!)

The purpose of the Physical Activity and Health Organization is to provide a forum for professional dialogue about the overall goals and objectives of Eastern Oregon University to promote issues related to curriculum and establish curriculum requirements that are in line with the national standards. In addition, this organization will provide an outlet for open discussion about fund raising, professional conferences, university equipment, while establishing a vehicle for leadership experiences amongst the student body.

OR - Another one:

The Eastern Oregon University Athletic Club exists to bring on campus and online students within the PHYSH major together for the purpose of leadership development, peer mentorship, community change, and unity among like-minded students. EOUAC serves to students a voice related to curriculum content & program requirements, equipment & facilitiy modifications, and an avenue to create a culture at EOU of school spirit, through support of athletics, and of health and wellness, through the facilitation of fitness classes and community events that will educate and promote a lifestyle of healthy and active living.

  • Vice-President
  • Curriculum Advisor
  • Activities Director
  • Outreach Coordinator
  • Ways and Means Officer (Fundraising/Treasurer)

Officer duties should be explained at the first meeting and nominations given. Canditates can prepare a short speech to run for an office to be given at the 2nd meeting, were elections will occur.

Ideas to pursue:

  • Reopen the university pool! (Or work to keep the community pool open)
  • Enhancing a sense of community for online students (correspondance/mentorship, webcasts/skype meetings, online forum)
  • Convention travel (fundraising, student presentations)
  • Membership and/or continuing education in professional associations and societies within the realm of health and fitness
  • Peer mentoring program for oncampus and online students (Assign mentors for correspondance via email)

  • Online members may contribute by providing feedback on agenda topics and offering fitness activities throughout their community
  • Invite coaches, community members, administrators to be guest speakers/contribute
  • Develop a library of used textbooks to check out for a term
  • Host community events ("Fun Run," PE training for Elementary teachers, Wellness workshops)

Scheduled Meetings: To be held on campus AND as a live discussion/chat online to initiate a decision making process and organized activity. Nominated officers should provide leadership and commitees should be set up to steer and accomplish the projects and goals outlined above.

How to Incorporate Online students:

  • Create an online community (Use Unicommons) where meeting agends and audio/video files can be posted and comments made.
  • Assign each on campus student 1-2 online students. Give them names & emails and have them be available for any questions.
  • Post the meeting agenda 5-7 days in advance so the online students can comment and contribute. Liason will voice their comments in the actual meeting and post on campus comments afterwards.
  • Online students can watch a webcast of the meeting and other on campus events
  • Online students should be encouraged to post their own videos and tell of their own community projects (via Unicommons)
