Rock on! I think the reintroducing of a PAH majors club is a great idea & I'm all for it. In fact, I know this is jumping ahead, but I've come up with a proposal for the club to pursue--if there is a mutual consensus--that I am adding into the collaboration. Check it out, I hope you guys are interested in getting involved. :)

I am all in for helping get the PAH majors club reintroduced as well! Jody, I think that getting the pool re-opened is an awesome idea and I know other people that agree as well!

For sure. I love the idea of getting the pool running again. Its just sitting there taking space. It will help the university with more than just provding a place to exercise as well.

This does sound like a great collaboration. As online students from acros the country we have limited availabilties to extracurricular activies, and this gives us a platform to work on and be involved in. I cannot believe that a school with such an intense and reputable physical education program would have a pool that is not in operation. Not only are the health benifits being overlooked, but there are so many courses and electives that could be added to the curriculum if you had an arena to practice them in. Maybe if we added some fundraising/marketing to the club we could raise some funds to use with initiatives such as this. I will attempt to contribute in any way I can.

Keep the ideas coming. Susan had a good idea that I saw in the comment revisions, about having a mission statement, but I didn't see this added into the document yet. Please add this, and other ideas, directly into the document like some of you have already done. I would say another good thing to add is a timeline for how the club should come to fruition. Someone ought to go talk to the ASEOU too, and ask about the process for and availability funds for majors' clubs.

Being an on-line member and not in physical proximity to the campus itself, I believe that my help will be limited, especially as far the limitations of my physical fitness abilities have gone over time. But I can develop a mission statement and at least try and give a purpose to the endeavor. The mission statement that I would propose may be suitable for presentation to board members or those who oversee such projects and purposes at the college level. "In light of the Healthy People 2010 Guidelines, EOU is symetrically aligned with its plans for the benefit and promotion of it students physical wellness and provides a unique and all-encompassing gym on- site to encourage and increase the health and wellness of its students. Through various levels of adaptation training, the gym is here for both the beginner and the inexperienced to gain a better understanding of the importance of good health, endurance and incorporation of these values which will , in turn, increase academic learning and proactive participation for the good of all involved". What do you think? Does anyone want to edit this?

Although I think this is a great idea for the school, I am having difficulty seeing how this would benefit the on-line students in anyway. I hear how it is intended to be a voice for our curriculum, and that I can understand, but how would this voice be heard? Most likely by the students on-site. I am trying not to be close-minded here, but I am not coming up with any ideas to spread this into the on-line community. Please let me know your thoughts and ideas, and hopefully someone will get me to see the light!

Dana, I'll outline and clarify the concept I've been thinking about. Online students in our program have very little common meeting place like our on-campus majors have. Our on-campus students see each other all the time outside of class, in areas like the dorms hallways, fitness center, and Quinn Gym. Online students are more-or-less on their own other than some interaction in discussion boards during class. There is no venue for communication beyond classes, and a majors club could foster and support this. Perhaps online students prefer to go it alone. Speak up on this! I may have a misconception, but I've often heard online students lament about their isolation and difficulty pursuing their degree from off campus. Perhaps another good idea is a new student "orientation" for online students whereby experiences students can mentor.

One thing I think this "club" could do would be to provide health education and activities to the students. We could set up information meetings and teaching sessions in regards to workout/weight loss plans, weight lifting techniques, meal planning/nutrition, healthy lifestyle choices, etc. We could also host free aerobic, yoga, weight classes to get people started. We could adverstise and present on campus, as well as have a video forum that online students can watch and submit their own presentations. We could have link off the PHYSH webpage.

I really like the idea about the pool too...why did it close in the first place? Lack of funds?

Good ideas Angela. Off and on we have had group fitness INTACT classes run by students like the ones you mentioned. A club would be a good way to organize these in a more sustainable way, because they are good experience for students to teach and the other students benefit from these classes. I was just recently talking to Jody about indoor cycling classes with the new bikes we are supposed to get in Quinn.

The pool is a controversial issue and with it being empty so long, it may take too much to recover it. The club could look into it and get the interest going again. Costs were the reason given for its closing a few years ago.

The best idea that I can come up with on this would be a sponsorship type program. This would be kind of like in the Military when we change duty stations, we are assigned a sponsor who shows us around the new base. Maybe that would be something to think about. Having a sponsor on-site to help answer any and all questions that the on-line students may have would be very helpful. Take me for instance. Although I have taken many other on-line classes, none were even close to the structure of your class, therefore, I was confused with what I was to work on.
Some students that come right out of high school definitely need the support group more so than older students who are choosing to continue their education. It is much harder to keep our younger students focused on the task at hand. Not all of you! I am definitely not trying to stereotype here, but most younger students are experiencing their first taste of freedom.
I think that I would like to have a sponsor on site that is taking the same degree plan/concentration as I am. We could share experiences and help each other out with assignments. I truly believe that the on-line students could develop the same life long relationships with other students if this were the case. Just a thought.

Dana, I think your idea is excellent. Maybe each group of incoming students can be assigned to a willing junior or senior "sponsor" if you will. They could be grouped by graduation year, alphabetical, major, etc. Said sponsor will give them an orientation to online courses and the various subject matters. They can be there for support, and almost as a tutor in some situations. Obviously helath and physical education is a difficult matter to study online unless you have some experience or knowledge going in. For those that have access to the campus they have an advantage of seeing and doing. Online only students do not have that ability, but I would not consider that a DISadvantage. I specifically chose this program since I was not required to be on site for ANYTHING. Other may find this a bit difficult and need the support. Again, excellent ideas in many ways.

Dana and Julie I think you both are on to something really good here. This is my first semester taking on-line classes and it was an adjustment for me. I have a bachelors degree in another field and I don’t remember my on campus classes being as time consuming or overwhelming as these on-line classes. If I only had half the clues now as when I started, I would have saved myself so much time. There have been times in this semester where I have had questions that probably could have been easy to answer if I had posted them to the board, but no I took hours struggling and trying to figure it out on my own. I know that if I had a peer (student) type mentor who I could e-mail off and on through the semester, I probably would have put myself in a better position when tying to complete tasks in a timely manner.

I think Dana, Julie and Katrina have a great idea. Have the older students helping the "new" students become adjusted to the whole system at EOU. A little buddy program would be great. And why not have the pool up and running while we're at it. It would be nice to have a swim team at EOU. I miss not having a pool to work out in. If we had the pool up and running, it would also help EOU "mingle" with the community (families) in La Grande.

Club is not a bad word to have in the title if it is preceeded by the proper name. The Downtown Athletic Club in New York, where the Heisman Trophy is awarded, is a good name. I am a member of the Commodore Club at Vanderbilt. The La Grande Athletic Club might be simple enough. Also, get the coaches of athletics involved in the club. Most people interested in athletics always enjoy being around the head coaches and getting to associate with them. My final suggestion to evoke interest is attaching a priviledge to being involved. Parking passes to athletic events and pre-game food are good ways to get peolple to meet each other and talk about events such as opening the pool.

George, I agree that it requires a more formal name, but I still think the name needs to reflect the association with the university. Le Grande EOU Athletcic Club to follow your lead. Since it is the institutions club and not the cities club it is my opinion it should included the schools name somehow. The coach involvement is excellent, and I would hope that all coaches as well as instructors in the Physical Education department would feel obligated to be included in the matter. They are an essential asset of knowledge and networking power for students. And, as always, what is a school without a POOL! Numerous courses, for credit, as well as physical activites for enjoyment and exercise as well as sporting competitions could be completed in this pool. You could generate revenue by charging non-students just $2 or $3 for an open lap swim or exercise class. Though it is costly to renovate a pool, work could be completed by the members of said club, as well as those with pursuit of swim coaching careers; it is an excellent way to learn the mechanics, literally from the ground up, of resurecting a pool and getting it up and running. You may even be able to incorporate a swimming pool operator course and certificate into the deal.

I think starting this club would be a great idea and by reading the comments above I think by next year we could have an outstanding club. I think we should start to officially get this club up and running so we start with all our projects on our "to do" list! This is an awesome idea and I'm excited for the outcome!

I am an on-line student (I live in metro Atlanta, GA), and this is my first quarter at EOU. I have been out of college for 13 years and these were my first courses at Eastern Oregon. I could have definitely benefited from a majors club or some type of forum to ask questions of my more experienced/veteran peers in the P.E. program. I have felt very isolated at times and have struggled getting used to the classroom setup, forum, and learning how to manipulate a lot of the tools/functions on UniCommons. I also really like the idea of a new student “orientation” for online students where we can receive mentoring from more experienced students. I would love to give my input/suggestions as this move forward. Thanks….Eric.

Just like Mattea said, we need a to do list. The first would be electing officers, advisor. You know what would be really cool besides helping open the pool, trading text books with each other! Just returning a book yesterday and barely getting anything back for it, made me think that it'd be great to trade up and down with each other with our PE books. It would also help the on-line students, as far away as Atlanta!

Thanks for all of your input here. Good suggestions. I will leave this project open into next term, because I have some other classes that will be good to move this forward.

Feel free to continue providing input and edits to the post. I have added a ToDo list based on suggestions.

Phil, I think this is a grand idea. I always hesitate to purchase "used" textbooks not knowing what you will get, and I also hate to pay the full price for some of the less needed ones. The major courses do not bother me so much for I know I can use them later for reference....It would be great to have a place or board to post what you have available and what you are in need of. Great idea!

I have just bumped this into the Sport Management Fall 2010 class to continue work on the project.

This group would be a great way to promote what we all are passionate about. In reguard to the pool,it was closed, to my understanding, due to the financial situation that existed at the time. I am not sure if that situation still exists now. We can, as students, utilize the public pool here in La Grande at no charge, which is nice but somewhat problematic, especialy for those who live on campus or are without personal transportation. It would be much better to have the pool open on campus.

I'll address a question some had in class this morning about whether this is a hypothetical idea or a plan for a real club. Right now it is still very much in the concept stage, so any work on this should be examined with this in mind. However, since there has been real interest, this project could progress into an action phase whereby the club is formally re-introduced. If, in the process of the planning here, we decide the need or value for a club isn't there, we can abandon the concept. However, at the very least I would like a viable start-up plan in place.

Let me throw out another reason a club could become a reality soon. Last term I indicated that I am president-elect of the Western Society for Kinesiology and Wellness (WSKW) and called for EOU students to attend the conference in Reno this October. I have a few committed to go, and more are definitely welcome. One of the features of this conference is the Peavy Papers, which are student papers that are presented at a special session. Within a few months, there will be a paper review process that includes students from various universities. We need reviewers from EOU. If a club were to form, it could organize a select group of reviewers, raise funds to go to the conference, and coordinate other concerns in order to make conference attendance a reality. In fact, some simple objective like this may be good enough to drive the re-formation of the club and then other goals could later ensure its continuance.

I think the idea of having the club raise funds for students to attend things such as the fitness conference is much more beneficial, and realistic, than trying to re open the pool. We discussed in class this morning how there are other plans for the pool area and the school pays for us to all have a pass to the public pool in La Grande.

Brian we met as a class on thursday and came up with a few ideas to start this project. We picked officers and a name and came up with and idea of an activity. i was just wondering as far as just the project where should we post this information.

Sorry I was not in class Thursday, I did not recieve the e-mail until that morning, as I check my mail daily until 2PM. Is there anyone who is still in need of a partner for the administrator interview project?

Steven (and anyone in the class), you should get your work on this reflected somehow in the document by clicking the edit button at the top of this page and updating the information.

I am a strictly online student and don't live in proximity to campus either. I would love for an online forum to be set up (outside of classes) for just the club where I could go to ask questions of experienced students, ect. I too had a hard time getting used to the format after having been accustomed to the Blackboard type class setting and I would love a place where I could go to see what events, fundraising, etc was going on. I don't really like "going it alone" and would love to have a place where I could feel more connected to the school. On a side note, making others in the online program feel more connected to the school may increase alumni revenues in years to come. When students feel more connected to their college they are much more likely to contribute funds as an alumni.
