Yoga and Pilates

I am finishing up my fitness testing this week and working out my workout plan.  I have three yoga and pilates work out tapes (that I have purchased and never used, for a while now!) and I am trying to find if I would consider them an aerobic activity or a muscle work out.  I know from past experience that yoga is very effective for strengthening and toning the body, but I don't think it ever got my heart rate up enough to consider it an aerobic activity (unless you consider the stress of trying to get yourself into some of those positions with other people around).  I have been looking on the web for advise and it is consistently split, some say yes and other say no.

Anyone have advise for me on this?

i believe it would fit the description of a muscle workout since itworks on different muscle groups and yes you are right that is also aerobic if you want to count anxiety as a tool to get your heart rate up! Sense of humor priceless $$$

In further research I did find that the CDC lists or classifies Yoga as a muscle strengthening workout and I will be incorporating in into my workout plan as such. Thanks.

cdc

could you explain what "CDC" is? thanks debra

Congratulations on finishing up your fitness testing, I plan on doing that this week. I run every morning, but that is it. I need a good muscle work out, as well as get out of my comfort zone and try something different. Except for a few classes , I have never done much Yoga. How are the tapes working for you? And can you recommend a good one?

The CDC is the US Health and Human Services Center for Disease Control and Prevention, sorry I am so use to using accronyms for everything there are alot of them in my employment.

Honestly, I have not tried the videos yet and I have only participated in yoga one time a couple of years ago. I will say I was skeptical of it when I started, but it really does work. I am not very coordinated and some of it was difficult, but it still worked even when I could not do everything perfectly. I am hoping the tapes are good, because going to the classes is way out of my comfort zone!

I have my plan basically worked out, but need to complete my fitness testing on Friday, so I plan on starting the videos next week.

I am not very coordinated either, that is why I would like to do it at home, however in the classes I did take their were some people that were as uncoordinated as I was...
Let me know how your yoga is going. I think today I will look up on the internet for a good recommendations for a Yoga DVD.

If you find out a good one please do not hesitate to share! I have the Winsor Pilates tapes I have only used the a few times but it is definitely a work out!! I also just bought a Wii fit and they have a little yoga section it is kind of fun but it just makes me realize how off my balance is : )

I took a yoga class a few years ago, and LOVED it! It was at college and I was always so relaxed when I left! I have tried to do a few of the poses since and found that it really does use muscles you don't normally use! And if you do decide to venture out to a class, trust me when I say if you find a true beginners class there will be plenty of people falling all over the place! At least that was my experience! GOOD LUCK!

I found a Yoga DVD I really like. It called Yoga for yourself with Ann Richmond. It is only 30 minutes longs, and targets abs, thighs, gluts and arms. I am doing it in the morning before I go running. It is a nice way to start the day!
