This is a good article I read today that reports on the importance of avoiding long bouts of sit time:

I was reading the article and what really caught my attention is the molecular and physiological changes that occur from sitting too much. I never thought about this before reading the article, but it makes sense. The body's response to a period of physical activity, after being inactive will increase their health risks. Especially when sitting for long periods.

Dear Professor Sathers, thank you for posting this article--it really drove home for me what I already suspected. I sit for long periods of time at my computer, my back hurts, my stomach hurts from doing this. I am now wearing my podometer around and tracking mymovement in my house and making certain I give myself breaks from sitting at the computer. Maybe my back won't hurt so bad each night when I finally go to bed!

I too am trying to take more breaks and get intermittent activity after reading this. While I do get longs periods of intense exercise during the day, I also spend hours in front of the computer, and this practice needs some modification.

As I was reading this article I started going feeling a little bit of panic! And felt grateful to be in a class that requires me to move. It is so crazy how I lived such an active life and how much it and I have slowed down!! I am not a huge T.V watcher but I can spend hours on the internet blogging and doing things of that nature. This is a good eye opener for me to give myself breaks from sitting so long!

Awareness is the first step. I am guilty of sitting too much in the winter. The "article" came back in short form in "The Enquirer." I was sitting and reading and there it was? Well, The rest of the weekend I was much more active and felt a lot better for it!
