Great Rubric! Very detailed! Good job Noelle!

Wonderful. You really broke down the movements. Thank you.

I think this is a good way to break down the movements. There is one detail I was unsure about... From my personal experience in gymnastics the starting position is standing with your leading foot forward and arms extended up. You call it the "standing position" and the extending of the leg forward is not mentioned for the movement. It is something that is needed just in order to do a cartwheel-I am wondering if the "rock back on back leg" is the student stepping back, or how this would work. I only wonder because if it confuses me, it will probably confuse a student. I think numbers 3-5 are excellent, but the first two you may want to find different wording to make it more clear.

You have the important components here, but a couple important aspects need to be more explicit. The first hand placement must be clear that it is the same hand/arm as the forward leg side (i.e. "the bent leg"). Surprisingly, a common mistake is to try to go with the wrong hand first. Another key is to emphasize the bent front leg, which is perhaps the most important point for a proper move. Also, Grace's points about the rocking are good too. For the last point, I wouldn't use "same position" because this can be interpreted as the same place, and you want to be facing in the opposite direction not the same direction. I can tell you have the right concepts in this rubric, it is just that the wording needs to include more clarification and accuracy.

My daughter always tried to put her "wrong hand" first and it seemed so weird to me. I'm glad to know it is not uncommon!

I came into the course having gymnastics as a weakness for me, but after reading the textbook and notes, the lesson overall is pretty good. I agree, the placement hand wording is sort of confusing, and the student may have a hard time determining which hand to plant first.

Thank you all for your comments! I have edited my rubric so hopefully it makes more sense. And also added my references. Grace- for the lead foot forward idea you were mentioning, I am a little confused because when I was reading information from the book on how to do a cartwheel they had you stand sideways, so your side was facing down the length of the mat. You werent starting facing forward so that you would have one foot forward infront of the other. Basically I am thinking that we are talking about two completely different ways to begin a cartwheel. Does that explain what you were asking?? Also how I interpreted the rocking back was that it was more of a weight adjustment to gain momentum rather than an actual step back. Hopefully this clears some of the confusion up! Thanks again for the comments!

I like this but also agree about the wording. I too was not very educated on gymnastics before this course, Im more of a stick and ball kinda guy myself but I could follow your rubric. As pertaining to the wording, I know that if I saw it demonstrated I would be able to know exactly what to do so I dont think thats too big of an issue. Overall, I think Im ready to go try a cartwheel!
