Proposal Ideas
I've been having a hard time thinking of a good proposal idea. I came up with 2 potential ones and would appreicate feedback.
1) Propasal to add personal trainer certification classes to the PHYSH degree plan. I know a lot of poeple, including myself who are interested in becoming certified, however our degree does not equip us for this.
2) Proposal for EOU to host a marathon/triathalon. I know a lot of people who run in these and have to go to Portland or Seattle to participate. What if we had one in Eastern Oregon?

I really like your proposals. Personal trainer certification classes would be a great addition to the PHYSH program. I am a P.E. major myself and would have loved the opportunity to take these classes if they existed. As with most things, in business it comes down to costs and benefits. Offer EOU enough benefits, that is, how the addition of these classes would benefit the university, and I'd say there's a chance. As for the "marathon/triathlon," are you proposing two separate events or two different races on the same day? Either way, this event(s) should probably take place during the summer for optimal conditions. You can get away with running a marathon maybe late spring or early fall as well. The water would surely be too cold winter and spring for the triathlon. You can probably get away with a triathlon early fall too. How long of a triathlon are you thinking? If you want to attract any serious competitors, I advise making it a true competitive distance such as Spring, Intermediate (or Olympic), or some sort of ultra distance. It would be cool to run a marathon that incorporates the little surrounding Union County towns such as Union, Elgin, Imbler, Summerville, etc. That way support can be drawn from not just La Grande.
Thanks Andrew for your feedback!!!
Your idea for the triathlon is a good one. I know that the City of La Grande holds a sprint triathlon in late August. It takes place in conjunction with the summer festival, "Crossing the Blues". It might not be a bad idea to contact them, they were a little low on volunteers last year and with Eastern visible that would be great PR.
Both would be viable proposals. Also, both have some already existing models in place to go from. We have offered a personal training certification in the past, as a class. Other schools do this too. And, there are some local "fitness" events already in place that could serve as a model: 3 Rivers Race (which has a marathon option), Solstice Triathlon, and EOU basically runs The Werst Race.
I think the idea of offering a personal training certification as a class is a great idea. I know that I want to receive my certification and think it would be awesome to be able to take it at Eastern. As Professor Sather mentioned that this has been offered once as a class here would be a great start for you. You can see how the class worked and more importantly why it’s not offered anymore, and if these reasons would be easy to overcome and to get the class implemented again.
I heard that EOU offered personal trainer certification in the past and that it was fairly popular. I am looking to get certified and would love to have the opportunity to get certified on campus instead of making the trip to boise or another close testing facility.
Of your two ideas, I would be more interested in teh personal training certification. I would like to know what all the class would involve or if it could be done through distance education or if it would have to be done on campus.
Angela, I really like the marathon idea. With enough promotion I think it could be succcessful as well as benifit the surrounding communities. Besides, who would not enjoy the beautiful area in this region if they were participating or spectating. The only draw back I would see is getting here if comming in by air. It can be time consuming and costly.
