Teaching Eval of Noelle Carsten's 1/20 Lesson
Today I observed Noelle Carsten teaching our first grade PE class at Central. After class we went through specific things I observed in her lesson with her. Here is another evaluation for her teaching.
Class Management 5/6
- Equipment and materials are organized for maximum efficiency and safety.
- Teacher maintains order and students are on task throughout the lesson.
- Good pedagogical techniques are employed.
- Appropriate tempo and flow is maintained for the activities.
- Time is managed properly.
- Transitions between activities are smooth.
- All students are supervised throughout the teaching session.
Feedback: Needs to focus on smother transitions between elements within activities and between activities themselves. Such as "Bring the Hoola Hoops here and then go sit down." Things got a little chaotic without the second instruction. Also not all students were adequately supervised. Some were doing the activity correctly while a lot were not. This is hard, but Dr. Mielke suggested that she focus on one part of the class at a time, then the next part, then the next. She showed good pedagogical techniques and the tempo was good!
Lesson Plan 5/5
- Content is well organized and readable.
- Adequate detail is provided.
- 2-4 instructional teaching cues are presented that are concise yet descriptive.
- The sequence of activity follows a clear progression from introductory activities to conclusion.
Feedback: Great lesson plan with more than enough activities! Easy to follow and stuck with it well. Teaching cues used in class were great and the progression of activities was good!
Activities 5/5
- Types of activities ensure maximum participation by all students.
- Games are enjoyable for the students.
- The instructional focus for the day is emphasized by the game.
- An adequate number of activities are scheduled for the class.
Feedback: All students were participating at all times, besides getting bored at learning a dance - games were enjoyable, the objectives were met, and there was enough activities scheduled with one more to use if needed.
Presentation of Information 4/4
- Accurate descriptions of sport skills, rules, and activities.
- Information is understandable and appropriate to the level of the learner.
- The teacher follows the lesson plan, only deviating when appropriate.
Feedback: Information was understandable and appropraite, she followed her lesson plan and did a good job of improvising when needed. Make sure they understand what "hop" means, some students were galloping and some were jumping.
Instructor Feedback 1/3
- Feedback is accurate and specific to the learner.
- Both corrective and positive feedback are provided where appropriate.
- Instructor moves around the class giving attention to various students.
Feedback: There was a lot of encouragement, but not a lot of correction. It's important to not only have them participating, but participating rightly. She didn't move around the class much. For somethings she needed to be in front, but for others she could have walked around a little more.
Sequence 2/2
- The activities and instruction follow a logical progression for the teaching session.
- The lesson is in a logical sequence in relation to the unit plan and overall curriculum.
Feedback:There was good logical progression to her teaching session and it went well with overall curriculum!
Overall: 23/25
Noelle did a great job! Some of the problems she ran into were unforseen and this experience will better prepare her to teach in the future. She has a great presence in the classroom. The kids really enjoy her! Good job!
