Risk Management Project

Risk Management Project

I examined a workout club that is open to people in the community upon purchasing a membership. The facility does not share the building with anything else, and is large with multiple rooms and workout areas.

The possible Risks of the fitness facility I observed:

1.  The health facility I evaluated didn’t have any first aid kits that were in visible sight to the people using the facility. The only first aid kits were behind the counter where the employees were stationed.  The facility could put first aid kits around the facility so they are accessible to members.

2.  The facility is a small area with a lot of things within the confined area making it very crucial that the floor be clear of tripping devices. To solve this, the facility needs to make sure all of the equipment, as well as the personal belongings of members is safely stored and off the floor.

3.  One main safety hazard that I observed was the entrance doors of the facility. First when exiting the building the doors pull towards you. Another safety hazard of the doors is that one of the exit doors is broken and does not open. All entrance doors should be in good condition as far as not being broken, but also they need to be push exits in case of a fire or some other instance where a quick exit of the building is needed.

4.  The workout facility had rooms where the walls where covered in mirrors. The potential hazard with the mirrors was that they had cracks in them. These mirrors could easily break and be hazardous to those around; the mirrors need to be replaced in order to solve this potential problem.

5.  The floor of the health club is tiles throughout one of the rooms. This floor has cracks, and missing pieces. The floor needs to be replaced in this room.

6.  The exercise equipment at this facility was older equipment and needs to be inspected regularly for the safety hazards involved with older exercise equipment.

7.  I was observing the fitness club when it was raining outside, and because of the rain there were tubs set up around the floor because the roof was leaking. This is a major hazard because the tubs are set up in the middle of the room, as well as the hazard of the water leaking onto the floor where someone could slip and fall from it.

8.  The weight racks were not securely fastened to the floor. The racks were wobbly and need to be fastened making them sturdy.

9.  People were able to “sneak” into the club without showing proper identification proving their membership. This is potentially hazardous to the club because these non members have not been properly trained to use the facility. The desk needs to be manned at all times that the club is open checking the people who enter.

10.  Each time the workout equipment is used it need to be properly sanitized. Sanitizer need to be out and easily accessible at all times so the equipment is properly cleaned.

11.  The fitness equipment such as ellipticals and treadmills use power cords. The potential hazards of these cords are that they are plugged into the closest wall leaving these cords exposed. The cords should not be exposed; this could be solved by installing outlets in the floor next to the machines.

12.  Throughout the facility there were only one or two employees visual. The employees need be available to the members and need to be around in case of an emergency.

13.  The employees need to be readily available to those working out, as well as need to be trained in the case of an emergency. One of workers was around the front desk only and not paying attention to those working out. All of the employees need to be properly trained such as being CPR certified, and need to be fully attentive to all people around them.

14.  Some of the members at the facility were misusing the equipment. This is dangerous to them and potentially those around them. Each member needs to be properly trained on the use of the equipment.

15.  One of the areas in the facility was a racquet ball court. Two of the people playing racquet ball where not wearing the proper protection including lack of eye protection. Each person using the facility to be checked and the rules of wearing proper protection gear need to be enforced.

16.  As a new member to this facility when signing up I had to sign the facility consent form and pay my dues. Pre-Screening of new members needs to be implemented in order to ensure that the members are physically capable of working out and using the facility.

17.  This facility offers a pool and spa to its members. Upon observing the pool I found there was floating debris. The pool and spa need to be adequately cleaned on a regular basis.

18.  A major hazard in any facility is if there was a fire. Fire extinguishers should be visible around the building for immediate use in case of a fire. The facility had no visible, easy to access fire extinguishers. There should be available extinguishers in place in case of a fire.

19.  The facility did not have visible emergency exit signs over the exits of the building. As a safety precaution the facility needs to have well illuminated exit signs over all visible emergency exits.

20.  A perk of the facility to the members is a sauna. The hazard in the sauna was that the lining of walls and seats had wood that need to be sanded and repaired to make it free of splinters.

Comments

As a pool operator your item 17 kinda makes me sick. Debris floating? That is unacceptable! State Health Officials (at least in Montana) would probably give out a fine if the pool and spas were not cleaned up within a specified amount of time.

It looks like you got a pretty good view of things in the facility, was the cost of membership worth what is available?

Chelsea!

I was also going to do an observation at this same club. One thing I really noticed in this particular facility was the bathroom doors in the women's locker room. They have sharp exposed metal. The covers on the bottom of the bathroom doors have simply been removed. Every time I see them I can't imagine what would happen if you hit your foot on the exposed metal. WOW! I think we both need to share our concerns with the club.

Great job!

I can say I have never been in the pool just because of the sanitation issues I have seen with it. As far as the membership goes, it seems to be high compared to other areas facilities that offer more to their members.

Since I have read your comment, I took a few minutes to examine the medal exposed in the locker room and was very appalled by this hazard. Action needs to be taken on this as well as some other issues to create a safer environment.
