Evaluation of an Interview Tool

Evaluation of the City of Bozeman’s Lifeguard I Interview Tool:

Currently the City of Bozeman has a different evaluation tool for each position.  At the Swim Center we have three different tools for my position, which is the Lifeguard III, down to the Lifeguard I position.  For this assignment I am going to review and edit the current Lifeguard I Interview Tool used during the hiring process.  It has been over ten years since I went through the Lifeguard I hiring process.  After looking at this I can tell that it has definitely been improved since I was hired.  Some of the questions are the same, but some have been changed to reflect the change in the social environment and position.

The interview team consists of two individuals, and in rare occasions three are present.  The individuals are the Aquatics Director and Assistant Aquatics Director.  The third person in these interviews is the Recreation Supervisor (the supervisor of the Aquatics Director).

The tool is set up to be based on a points scale.  Each question on the first part of the tool is worth 0 to 5.  There are 14 questions for a total of 47 points.  These questions are about the individual, their qualifications, and why they are applying for the position.  The second part of the tool is for the interviewer to use for the purpose of finding out about personal conditions, criminal actions, and how they feel previous employers view them.  This is also a section that allows the interview team to ask questions, and then for the applicant to ask the interview team questions.  The last part of the interview is an actual swim test.  The individual is scored based on the American Red Cross Swimming Level to see if they have a proper demonstration stroke for instructing swimming lessons.  After demonstrating their swimming stroke, they then have to complete a timed 200 yard swim for a score, 5 minute pass/fail tread, and perform both an active and passive victim rescue.  There is maximum total of 105 points for the entire interview tool.

The tool is straight forward and the individual hired is chosen from the highest score of the applicants interviewed.  I do think that this is the fairest way to find the best qualified individual for the position.  It makes it really hard for an individual to be hired through discrimination.  Experience with children is a major part of the position.  The current tool does not explore this area enough to draw out the applicant’s skill level.   Regardless, I do believe that this tool is still effective for hiring Lifeguard I for the Swim Center.

Although the actual interview questions will not be provided, the scoring for both the impressions of the applicant as well as the current swimming and lifeguarding test and scoring are shown below:
