2nd grade P.E. class

Central Elementary School

Teachers: Manny Aguilar and Steven Cragun

Poly Spot Dribbling

Purpose: To increase students’ cardiovascular health and to improve motor skill of dribbling and hand to eye coordination.

Length: 30 min

Materials: A ball for each child, poly spots, and numbered cards.

Warm-up (5 min): Divide into groups of 4 or 5.  Have students do leap frog the entire length of the floor in their groups.  Do it 2 or 3 times.  10 Jumping Jacks.

Explanation and practice (5 min): Each student gets a basketball or some other ball they can dribble.  Have spots spread out on the floor.  Each kid gets on a spot.  Hold up a card with a number on it and have the kids say what number it is and then dribble that many times.  Run through that a few times to make sure they know their numbers and get the idea.

Activity 1 (10 min):  Have kids jog around gym holding their ball while music plays.  When the music stops kids find a spot and dribble the number of times listed on their spot.  Then repeat.

Activity 2 (10 min): Place balls on outer edge of the gym.  Have kids hop on one leg while music plays when music stops have kids run and grab a ball then run to a spot and dribble the number of times listed on the spot.  Repeat.

Looks like fun! So the balls don't go rolling around during activity # 2, have a bunch of hula hoops around the perimeter of the gym for kids to put the balls in to keep secure. Just an idea.

Those look like fun activities! How'd it go?

This looks like a great lesson plan! It includes lots of cardio which is definitly a desire for a PE lesson! I especially like Activity Number 1. I like how it incorporates running to music which definitly makes any activity better, then it forces them to use the skill they previously practiced as they dribble a specific number. Overall I think this is a great lesson plan an shows a good progression of activities. Hopefully it went well!
