Help with compressing video

I don't know how to compress my video.  I don't even know what format it is in.  I have had this video for several weeks and have been at a loss on figuring out what to do.  Can someone help?    And yes I did check out Sather's posting on how to compress videos...

I had a issue with mine too. Im no amatuer filmaker either so this was a learning experience for me as well. The format will usally show up after the name of the video like teaching.wmv or .mov etc. What I finally did was downloaded a free program called IM TOO MOV converter. This worked for me because mine were in a .mov format. This program converted my format and also compressed the size. It went down from around 180 mb per clip to about 20-22. There are other programs out there Im sure for your type of format, you just have to figure that part out first and then do a google search for "How to convert so and so format to so and so format" If you tried to upload the videos without compression, it will take hours, believe me I tried. My first one took nearly three hours to upload to the site. After compression, about 20 minutes. Hope this helps.

Sweet Baby Jesus! I finally got the damn video uploaded only after 15 tries! With the assistance of my son it took us ALL day to figure out what we were doing wrong after all the downloading, uploading, encoding, compressing, editing, re-editing, crying, cussing and all the other "ings" that took place in order to complete this assignment. I swear child birth was less painful and didn't take as long!

We used Windows Movie Maker to edit, compress, encode and upload (even though we downloaded Mediacoder). Mediacoder didn't work for us. Also, it helps to know that the P.E. video will only take up 300MG...

Congratulations. I'm still stuck in compression purgatory..... at this rate, I may never get out.

Just so you know, Windows Movies Maker does compress the video. Their export setting have options for different formats. The lower quality formats are compression, so if you can get the file small enough (but with decent quality) there is no need to compress further. MediaCoder is just a more powerful tool. I've found that some don't click the right link for MediaCoder to download it. They end up clicking an add for another program, so just make sure you have "MediaCoder" when you use the preset I provide and follow the instructions on my guide.
