Risk Management

Risk Management

Parent meeting: Beginning of year I will have a parent meeting and we will cover all that will happen in case of an injury.  Also during this time we will talk about nutrition and how important it really is. Also at the time I will have a waiver, that the parents will have to sign, saying that if a player is hurt while participating in the sport, the coach and school are not reliable.

Warm-ups: Warming-up is very important.  It will be part of my practice plan so that it will ensure that they will before and after practice.

Water breaks: Water breaks are also going to be part of my practice plan.  Depending on the sport, whether inside or out, water breaks will be part of practice when they should be.  Also, players will be able to get a drink whenever they want as long as it does not interrupt with practice.
NFHS states how important water breaks are.  We do not want our athletes to become dehydrated.  Depending on what kind of sport it is, depends on how many water breaks you really need.  If outside in the burning sun, it is going to need a different amount of water breaks than someone who is indoors.

Certified Athletic Trainer: We will have a certified athletic trainer on site during practice and games.  In case of injury, the Athletic Trainer will be informed and will take the correct steps.

Physicals: Athletes will be required to have a physical by a physician before they can engage in practice or games.

Healthy diet: I will make it clear to my athletes that it is important to have a healthy diet.  During sports, they should not be dieting or eating the wrong types of food.  We will cover what are good things to eat during the season, what should be eaten before practice and games, how long before practices and games, and how much fluids they should be drinking.

Proper gear: I will make sure that the athletes are wearing the proper gear.  Such as in basketball they will be wearing ankle braces, in soccer making sure they are wearing tall enough shin guards and so on.

Safe environment: I will also make sure that the environment is safe. Such as if in a gym, that they gym is in doable condition and there will be no risks to my players if competing or practice in there.

First Aid: I will also, as a coach, be first aid certified in cases of an emergency and do to the fact that a certified athletic trainer is not present.

i like how you have a parent meeting before the training begins. I think that it is important to get the parents involved in their kids lives as much as possible.

Your risk management plan seems to be very complete. I was wondering what level you were talking about coaching here as you talk about a parent meeting the beginning that would make me think it was high school or below, but you talk about having a trainer on site and I dont know of a lot of high schools that have this available?

One thing I would add would be that your players are well condition so they don’t get caught off guard, because they are to winded to focus on what going on around them.

You have touched up on pretty much every point. Risk management is very important when you are coaching other peoples children. You did a good job by incorporating the parents, and making sure you keep an eye on the athletes nutrition. I also think it is important to have the proper equiptment and gear. It is very important that all the equipment works properly for the athletes safety. I also think it would be important to teach each player how to use to the equipment to minimize the amount of injuries and broken equipment.

I more than likely will be coaching high school. The trainer on site I would say is more of a in the building. As long as we have a trainer in the area, so that it will not take more than a couple of minutes for them to report to the injury.
