Coach search
Thought I would share with everyone the process of finding a new coach. Recently the EOU soccer team has been in search of a new head coach, this process has taken over four months and has not been easy. As a senior I was not involved as much as the returners but I did get the opportunity to sit in and listen to interviews for potential coaches. This was a very good way for me to watch and learn how coach interviews typically go, to prepare myself for up coming job interviews.
So here is how it went. First the coach went on a campus visit and talked with Rob Cashell our athletic director, then they would sit in a class room with the soccer team without Rob, this was just to let the girls meet him and see what his coaching philosophy was and to just kinda get a feel for how he would run things if he were chosen for the head coach. A few questions the team would ask were: " what is your past coaching experience, what do you look for in a player, how would you handle academics as well as athletics, what is your idea about team rules and consequences" and so on. We would spend a good hour asking him questions and allowing him to ask questions of us as well. How the different coaches would respond to these type of questions told us alot about that certain coach and how they would fit in to our program here at Eastern. I am happy to say that the search for a head soccer coach here at Eastern is finally over as we have selected a coach to steer us in the right direction for up coming years. The biggest hint I would give to people in this field would be to be very honest about how you coach and youryour coaching philosophy. The players like someone who isnt afraid to say the wrong thing because every coach is different.
Hope this post was informative for everyone looking to be a coach at the collegiate level.

I've been hearing so much about this whole search for a new soccer coach here. Nice to see that you guys have found one. Interesting, the fact that the athletes did the interview with him. I think that is awesome in that they are the ones playing for him and can get a feel for what they think. Not just going to be a big surprise in Fall. I thought they way he was interviewed was very interesting. Never knew that, good to know. Thanks for sharing. :)
yep no problem! and one more thing about college sports is that they are essentially year round so not having a coach for four months in the off season takes a major toll for any team having to run their own ship for a while. glad I was able to update you on this process
Courtney what a great idea to post something like this for class. I never thought about sitting in on a coaching interview before. Looks like you can gain some really good insight. I would have to say it is also very useful to talk to coaches that have been through an interview processes to find out what their experience entailed.
