Presentation for P.E. Workshops for Classroom Teachers

Our school district is looking at having to make $1.5 million for the 2010-2011 school year.  P.E. teachers will most likely be one of the casualties in this fallout.  If so, classroom teachers will be left to shoulder the responsibility of teaching P.E.  After many conversations with these teachers, I came up with this proposal in order to ensure that teachers get the proper training and support necessary to providing their students with a high quality physical education program.

It really is unfortunate that p.e. funds and staff are often the first to be cut when childhood obesity is reaching such an outrageous level. Your proposal addresses this problem in a great way that could save physical education for these children. Motivating teachers to want to teach p.e. and really care about doing it is one potential drawback that I see, but this is a great solution to a widespread problem.

Wow! I think Andy is right. When are we going to recognize the importance of PE. We need to do more to keep PE teachers training kids in PE. I think if it was a state standardized test, educators would become more focused on PE.

Interestingly enough, First Lady Michelle Obama (along with her hubby) is pushing an initiative called "Let's Move" in order to battle the prevalence of childhood obesity within this generation. The Obama administration is also consolidating federal funding in order to efficiently and effectively address this growing issue in various ways. Unfortunately, it wont probably be enough to save my job. Meanwhile we have to think ahead and address the "obstacles" that hinder classroom teachers from teaching P.E.

I love the idea! I would recommend putting a reference page at the end of your PowerPoint. Also, is the purpose of your proposal to present the need of a workshop to be started and an skeleton of what it shoud include, or are you putting one together yourself? What would it cost? How would it happen?

Great questions Angela. In my paper, I go much more indepth on how the workshops would be presented, administered and funded. I didn't put a lot of those details into the power point as it would be redundant to those who read both.
The cost of these workshops would depend on whether or not the trainer was currently a teacher within the district. If yes, then the cost would be minimal as the trainer would conduct the workshops during designated staff meetings. The school district would only need to pay for the materials.
How would it happen? I (the trainer/facilitator) would meet with each grade level on specified days and go over age appropriate skills & activities, the P.E. standards, P.E. models and block plans. The teachers would work in their school site teams and determine what and how they would implement their P.E. program. The focus of the workshop would be to make sure that the classroom teachers leave the workshop motivated, and with an actual plan on how to implement a high quality P.E. program.

Ok, I read the paper now! :) GREAT IDEAS! I'm going to save it in case I ever see the need in the district I end up in!

A few questions: What would the teachers miss in their staff meetings? (Would missing them be a problem?) Would teachers meet with the facilitator once a week through the whole year? Would summer sessions be an option?

For grading purposes, you might want to reformat your Reference page, having it on its own page and all the same font with no indendations. You sure have a lot of sources! Good job!

Nicely done! Having a child in elementary school, I understand how important PE is and how stretched the classroom teachers are to come up with their classroom curriculum and then a seperate PE curriculum. I'm sure this would be a greatly appreciated program in our school system.

As Angela mentioned, for grading purposes, I found and error on page 2, in the "How to get there?" para, if should be in, I believe and you may want to add a title page.

You did a terrific job.

After just seeing the powerpoint presentation I agree with Angela, I think that you need to add a reference page at the end. The presentation itself looks very professional and appears to have a good amount of information about the problem. You do talk about it being costly, which you may want to put in the value in a couple spots for those who do not see both the powerpoint and the paper. Some may only skim the actual paper if they are going to sit in on the actual proposal presentation and may not 'see' or 'remember' the cost when they are determining to approve or deny the proposal.

The paper is well put together. It appears to flows from one section to the next pretty seamlessly. I would caution though that your resource section is different fonts. I would make sure that this does not happen when giving it out for the actual presentation.

Great questions and suggestions Angela Bragato. I've been out of town for the last few days and away from the computer and will be working on your suggestions of attaching my references and fixing the fonts.
With regards to staff meetings, we are required under contract to meet every Tuesday from 3:15 to 4:30. Most principals will only meet with their staff about once a month as the meetings generally consist of going over administrative procedures, district notifications and mandates, and meeting with our union representatives. So the time slot is available to have these workshops throughout the school year, which would be ideal as I (the trainer) would be able to assist each school site with their fine-tuning their programs. Having the workshop during the summer wouldn't be as ideal as having it due to cost to the district. I think that our district would be much more receptive to having these workshops during regular scheduled meeting rather than paying extra for their teachers to show-up for a day long workshop.

This is a great idea. Our schools and society need to emphasize the importance of physical activity and if they are going to cut physical education teachers they need to ensure that our regular school teachers can do an adequate job teaching P.E. This presentation is well thought out and it seems like it could be a very effect program. Great presentation

Thanks for your input. I'm going to go back and work on the suggestions that you've made.

This is a great project and proposal you have created! It is extremely unfortunate that the school is experiencing these buget cuts and is therefore having to cut its PE teachers. However, I think your ideas for properly training the classroom teacher to teach PE is extremely important and should definitly be put in place. Simply because of buget issues, the students should not "suffer" in physical education with a lack of learning the skills and techiques they should learn in PE because thier classroom teacher is forced to teach it now and may not be completely prepared. Also, throughout this quarter as part of PES 359 I have been teaching 1st grade PE with a partner at an elementary school in La Grande and there the classroom teachers are forced to teach PE because they also had to cut thier PE teacher. I know the teacher is extremely thankful for us coming in and teaching PE and she has said many times she is learning great things from us to use to teach them when we leave. It would be great if your proposal could potentially be put in place at any school where the classroom teachers teach PE!

Thanks for all of your constructive comments. I've gone back through both the presentation and paper and tweaked them as best as I could...I'm not happy with how google.doc reformatted my paper. For example, it took several attempts to get my reference page to start on a separate page. One thing is for sure, I do not have a future in the computer industry. Hopefully my Pink Slip get rescinded.

This is a great project that I think addresses a major problem in the schools today. In my Physical Activity and Disease Prevention class this term we have covered the topics of obesity and overweight kids and the role of physical activity in preventing those issues. Physical activity is a key roll in preventing such things as obesity, some cancers, diabetes, cardiovascular health and even poor mental health. One day I remember talking about some elementary school had even put restrictions on physical activity during recess to "reduce injuries among the students". Starting kids out early in their lives with setting up regular physical activity can become a habit for the kids to carry through their adolescent years and into adulthood. A couple questions about your proposal: you said that under contract you are required to have a staff meeting once a week and you propose that the workshops be held during those time slots. If your required to partake in staff meetings once a week, would these workshops count under the contract as a staff meeting or would you also have to try to slip in there staff meetings that deal with administrative issues and district issues? With your proposal your proposing over a school district encompassing multiple schools, which would require all the schools to get on board with your proposal, but have all the schools in the district needs been looked into, such as funding, time, and facilities? With a proposal that is for multiple schools, issues like these would need to be looked into to better suit the entire proposal for multiple schools. All in all a great presentation and paper that I think addresses a major problem in schools around the country, not only in California.

Thank you Matt for your input and questions. With regards to using staff meetings as a forum for workshops I would probably only utilize one meeting per month in order to get each site started. Therefore, they would have the other three weeks of the month to go over administrative and district issues.
I've been entertaining the idea of going beyond our district and developing a proposal that would allow me to provide P.E. workshops to new classroom teachers in California. I met with a BTSA (Beginning Teacher Support Association)directer who provides workshops for new teachers within our region. She stated that she would be very interested in offering such a workshop for her program as there isn't anything like it available. She also stated that due to the current budget issues, and that it was a new workshop, I would need to charge $500 for a full-day workshop. She also noted that eventually as the demand would increase, the full-day rate could go up to anywhere as high as $3000. Creating a workshop that would incorporate other districts would be simple if I was working with one specific district at a time. The format that I proposed would be the same. However, if I were to do a P.E. workshop for beginning classroom teachers from various school districts, that would require a completely different format as the teachers wouldn't be working in their grade-level/school-site teams. I would basically be educating them on the developmental progression of skills from Kindergarten to 6th grade. I have some ideas formulating in my head, I just have to put them down on paper. Unfortunately, due to the our budget crisis, the interest for this workshop is definitely out there as the BTSA director has asked me for a proposal.

I don't think the majority of people understand the benefits of physical education. Teaching the benefits of physical activity to our generations at a young age will help ensure the longevity of their lives. How is that "somewhat important?" The reality of it is that the importance of physical education has been thrown under the bus because most people have never felt the true effects of vigorous physical activity. Our nations obesity rates are the evidence! Three out of four kids do not get vigorous daily exercise. That's 75%!If P.E. teachers are cut, it is the responsibility of the pencil pushers to enact a plan to educate the other teachers on the benefits of exercise and the side effects of not exercising enough. Also, it seems to me that teachers like to categorize a lot of students having ADD when in fact the reason they can not sit still or focus for long durations because they are not active enough. Approximately %75 of students do not get enough exercise, no wonder they can't focus or sit still!

I love this proposal! I find it really sad to see how so many people think the solution to our budget problems is to cut PE teachers out of the staff. WIth all the child obesity problems that lead to heart disease and other negative health issues you would think they would figure out that children need PE! I totally agree with Andrew on the 75% of student don't get enough exercise, no wonder they have problems sitting still in class all day! I couldn't agree more with the fact that if the general teacher is going to teach PE that they need to be educated on the subject, that is why this is such an important proposal! If they are going to be responsible for teaching our children how to exercise they need to know how themselves! They also need to understand the importance for it, I am working at one of the grade schools here in La Grande and I heard a teacher make the comment " dang I have PE today, I hate teaching PE" and that just made me sad because the kids love PE and need it! If the teachers don't feel the same then, they will not do the proper job that the children deserve!

Rosette, you mentioned that you need to charge $500, is that per person, per week? Why so expensive? Would the school district pay for it? How will that work with budget cuts?

Also, it would be interesting to see the results of your teacher survey. Did you pass that out already or is that a plan for the future?

I read over your proposal again and I think it's a great idea! I really hope you are able to get the funding, facilities, and whatever else you need to get this going!

I also loved your presentation. It had a lot of great ideas and good ways to implement them. As a minor thing I would add how often the CDC recommends 60 minutes of physical activity (slide 17) ex. The CDC recommends 60 minutes of physical activity each week, each month, or each day. That may help understand what goals teachers should be aiming for in regards to overall health of their students.

The $500 per day was a quote given to me by the Beginning Teachers Support Association (BTSA) Director who books and pays for various workshops relating to training new teachers from Kindergarten through 12th grade. Every new teacher in the state of California is required to do two years of BTSA before we can get our Clear Credential. She stated that her association would be willing to pay me that fee for a one day workshop regardless of how many people attend. The funding would come from the association which funded be each of the school districts. (Each school district pays approximately $40K each year, and there are 5 school districts apart of this association). The money is there, its just a matter of getting the proposal together and presenting it to her. Also, I would be able to sell curriculum (my own) and any other material at these workshops.

So the school district would pay BTSA a fee for having you come in, and in turn BTSA would pay you $500 for presenting the class. Am I ocrrect in this?

I think your power point presentation was very professional and well layed out. I would agree with the previos comments which suggested a reference page. I think it is important to let your audience know the information is not based only on opinion.

I completely agree with Andrew. It is ridiculous to cut PE programs. It will be interesting to see what kinds of federal money and programs will come about because the first lady has taken up childhood obesity as her platform.
