Academics
A glimpse at how Coach Anji Weissenfluh (Eastern Oregeon Women's Basketball Head Coach) handles academics. This is a page in our academic notebook talking about academics on the team...
One of the recruiting promises that we made you was that our coaching staff would be dedicated to you on and off the court. Your academic success is very important to our entire staff and we are here to assist you in every way possible.
One of the many resources we believe will aid you in your efforts to obtain your college degree is your Academic Notebook. You must stay current on the notebook, update it daily, and you must bring your notebook to every individual meeting. Notebook checks will occur weekly.
Remember, we strive for excellence in the classroom as well as on the court. Our program prides itself on having successful student-athletes and we work hard to meet and exced the following academic goals:
- Maximize individual academic potential
- 100% Eligibility
- Team GPA of 3.3 or better
- 100% Graduation Rate
Academic Requirements
The word "student" comes first in the term "student-athlete" for a very good reason. Whether basketball or a college education is more important to you personally, being a student must come first if you want to retain the privelege of competing in athletics for Eastern Oregon University. The coaching staff will provide advice on academic classes and have constant tracking and supervision of academic progress as well as class attendance. We have created this Academic Notebook in an effort aid your transition into Eastern, help you to develop effective study habits, make you aware of campus, resources, and eventually guide you towards academic independence. Our goal is to graduate all ofthe student-athletes that play in our program!
Academic Responsibilites:
- GO TO CLASS EVERYDAY!!!
- Obtain prior approval from coaches on ALL adds, drops, withdrawals, and grade changes.
- Arrive to class on time and sit in the front half of the class.
- Be academically acountable.
- Fulfill your individual specific requirements
- Achive your academic goals
Requirements
Study Table:
You will be required to participate in three study tables per week if:
- You are an incoming freshman or transfer student
- Your term GPA is below a 3.2
- Your overall GPA is below a 3.2
- At the descretion of the coaching staff
There is then a list of resources such as the math lab, writing lab, etc. And also there is a list of the University requirements of how to be on track to graduate.
As you can see academics are taken very seriously by Coach Weissenfluh and her program. The academic notebooks contain all of our class schedules, contact info of our teachers, every assignment, test, and project and the score we earn on them, goals, graduation plans, etc. We have meetings regularly so Coach Weissenfluh knows exactly what is going on and there are no surprises. I think it is an excellent way to stay on top of grades and it has helped me earn better grades. When I am a coach I plan to use a similar program as this.

Comments
This sounds like a rather intense program, but it seems that Coach Weissenfluh probably meets all of the goals in her program. I think that as a coach it would be important to be so on top of all of the students and their academic progress. Coaches have a very influential role and their opinions, advice and rules about scholastic achievement probably mean the most, especially when in relation to a sport that the athlete is playing!
Great example!
As coach said in sams' interview, she expects great things from her team, and she pushes her team to be the best that they possibly can.
all the things you have listed here do seem rigorous and thorough, but they are all goals that can be reached with hard work and dedication.
Salude!
Wow Shaylee those are some high standards from Coach Weissenfluh. It’s great to see a coach that puts such a big emphases on academics and the meaning of student-athlete. It seems that Coach Weissenfluh doesn’t just tell student-athletes that they need to do well academically, but is also very involved and provides the student-athlete with tools needed in order to meet the academic expectation. I remember having a problem with an art history class while playing volleyball in college. I was missing a lot of class because of the games and the coach made me aware that this was my problem. I never really got any guidance from the coach. It was the only class I every failed in my academic career.
