Updating Linfield Athletics Website - Proposal

Comments

I was very disappointed that I couldn't figure out how to add a quicktime movie into the presentation in powerpoint or google docs so this isn't as interactive as I wanted it to be.

I think this is a great idea. Eastern Oregon updated our sports website this year and I think it has made a big difference with interest in the program from outside sources. I think you did a lot of good research and found out some great details on how to make this project actually happen. Would you limit the games broadcast to just basketball?

I think this is a graet proposal. As a volleyball athlete at EOU, I know the times my parents coulnt come down or make it to an away game they truly enjoyed having the ability to watch the game and see live stats. And I am sure many parents of those athletes at Linfield would appreciate this option as well. It sure lookes like you have completed alot of research and have you bases covered, hopefully this comes to reality!

Nice idea, I think that the school might think it was actually worth the cost of not charging the public to view the site if they could get the visitors up, which could increase attendance for the games.

Ashlee, actually I was thinking that because their football does SO well and has gone to Nationals (including winning nationals a couple years ago) that it may be worth also posting those games online as well. Their football program makes twice the amount in revenues than the basketball program does. I am not sure of the legality of it all but I think that if you offer it for 2 mens sports that you have to offer the services for two womens sports to be in compliance with equity laws but I am not sure.

Kristen, I like the slide presentation. You really captured attention by stating that Linfield was the only school in the conference that did not have this system is place. Also it was very effective to use George Fox and their proven success as an example as you did on slide seven.

I agree with Carla in liking how you compared Linfield’s lack of live stats with the other teams in its Conference. Also, I feel the same as Noelle, in being a volleyball athlete at EOU the live video and stats was very beneficial to my family when I was playing and they were not able to make it for some reason. Considering the success of the athletic programs at Linfield, I am very surprised that their website does not offer this technology, but having been to their campus I was also surprised by their weight room and how much it needed updated as well.

This presentation caught my eye since it seems like now-a-days everything is ran through technology, and a school like Linfield that enjoys success in sports (mostly football) year in and year out doesn't have an up to date webpage! A thought about this system though is that for live stats updates would require someone at the game watching and getting the live stats into the webpage feed. At a basketball game so much is going on that it would be recommended to have 2 people watching and keeping the stats up to date with live time. How would you propose getting people to do this? Would it be a paying job, or a volunteer thing that students at the university who are interested in that aspects of sports want to do?

I included the people portion in the paper but not in the presentation. I would propose that it be part of an internship (unpaid) that students could commit to to get experience in sports for say, a sports management position or a team manager position. Currently the Sports Information director is the sole person taking stats at the game. I definately agree that ATLEAST one more person would be needed to input/run the live stats on the web especially since the Sports Information director's stats have come into question many times.

On a side note, I actually think the SID would be the ONLY road block in getting this proposal into implementation. The AD and Head Basketball coach both are on board.

What does the SID think about it? At EOU I know we hire someone to tape the game, the SID and grad assistant run everything else that needs to be done to have live web coverage of the game. (I'm not sure all they do...)

I think this is a great idea and your proposal seems like it would be really doable. It really makes sense to add this to the website.

One questions, what does "website value" refer to?

Also, I think the title "Bringing Lindfield Athletics Website into the 21st Century" sounds a little demeaning. I would recommend changing it to "Add Live Video feed and stats to Linfield Athletics Website" or something simple like that. Your current title communicates a negative attitude.

Otherwise, great job on this! I hope it actually happens!

Website value refers to the amount the website can be sold for. It takes into account the traffic to the site, the revenue generated from the site, how many other sites link into the site, and other various factors to produce a figure that the site is worth. The SID didn't express any opinions towards the proposal however this topic has been brought to their attention numerous times especially in the past 5 years when all other teams were upgrading sites and Linfield did not and he was opposed to the changes. I didn't intend to imply a negative tone with the title and I will change it to reflect a more neutral tone.

I can tell that you were passionate about this presentation, possibly because your brother goes to Linfield?
