Coaching Football Successfully by Bob Reade
Coaching Football Successfully
By: Bob Reade
Recently, I was handed a book from a long time coach here at the high school in which I coach. It is titled Coaching Football Successfully and was written by Bob Reade. Bob is somewhat of a local hero here in Illinois and holds the NCAA Division III record for consecutive wins. He coached Augustana College to five National Championships, four of which were consecutive. He won sixty games in a row between 1983 – 1987, and was his conference’s Coach of the Year nine times.
Reade started out coaching at the high school level and quickly became successful. He had the opportunity to coach at any level, but chose to stay at Augustana because he loved the school. His book is jam packed with information that is invaluable to any coach. Bob of course ran the wing – T formation with a slight variation. Some coaches refer to it as the wing bone offense. He also complimented the offense with a smash mouth 5-2 defense which he describes in the book.
Bob Reade’s book is a great resource for the young coach and I would recommend it to anyone interested in coaching. Although his main focus is football, his coaching philosophies and insights would be valuable to any sport. Next time you find yourself looking for a good read in the book store, check out Coaching Football Successfully by Bob Ready.
