Ultimate Frisbee Lesson, Teaching #2

Allotted Time: 20 Min.

 

Equipment:

-Wide open outdoor area or gymnasium free of obstacles and hazards.

-Several Frisbees.

 

Set Up:

-Instructor will inspect playing area for hazards.

-Instructor will mark field positions such as end zones, out of bounds marks.

 

Lesson:

-The lesson will consist of a brief explanation of Ultimate Frisbee and will include basic rules and techniques imperative to correct play of the game. The lesson will include a brief technical demonstration and practice of essential skills such as throwing and catching the disc. A game will follow the demonstration and practicing of skills.

 

Objectives:

-Students will learn what the game of Ultimate Frisbee is.

-Students will execute proper throwing techniques pertaining to Ultimate Frisbee.

-Students will execute proper catching techniques pertaining to Ultimate Frisbee.

-Students will demonstrate understanding of the rules of Ultimate Frisbee.

-Students will demonstrate all skills incorporated in instruction into a scrimmage game.

 

Procedure:

1). Introduction to Ultimate Frisbee. Instructor will introduce and go over the basic rules for playing Ultimate Frisbee.

 

2). Introductory activity: Passing with a partner. Student will get a feel for the Frisbee while the instructor gets a glimpse of what present skill levels exist.

 

3). Proper Throwing Skills: The instructor will demonstrate the correct grip, body stance, and execution of a common delivery method: the cross-body backhand delivery.

 

Cues for Grip

-Label up.

-Thumb over.

-Fingers under.

 

Cues for Stance

-Shoulder to target.

-Begin closed.

-End open

4) After the instructor has demonstrated the cross-body backhand with cues, students will take a few minutes to practice the aspects of the skill.

 

5) The instructor will inform and demonstrate several basic catching techniques. Techniques will include both the one handed and two handed “C”, and the sandwich technique. The instructor will explain the cues and relate them to form.

 

Cues for Catching

-Yippy Yap, “C” form.

-Mashing the Sandwich.

 

6) Students will practice the previously learned throwing skills and incorporate them with the different variations of catching techniques in a brief skill practice.

 

Closing Activity

-The closing Activity will consist of a scrimmage Ultimate Frisbee game. There will be up to seven players on each team (ideal). During the scrimmage, students will exhibit the major aspects of playing Ultimate Frisbee including rule knowledge, and basic skills including throwing and catching.
