The way we were
During the last several weeks as I have read, commented and now, flag projects, announcements, group collaborations and media projects, I attempted the media project, AGH! I wondered what could I add to this class? The conclusion I came up with was a commentary. A moment with Debra : I grew up in the 60's there were no fitness centers and hi tech exercise equipment. We went to the YMCA for fun not fitness. We took long walks outside, not on a treadmill. We rode bycycles outside not in a spinning class. We climbed mountains not rockmountains inside a building in downtown Portand. We did'nt need a pedometer to monitor our steps, we were to busy walking. We didn't swim for exercise we swam for fun. We ate pizza on Friday night without concern for fat content before we went rollerskating. We didn't play video sports, we played baseball, basketball, volleyball and tennis with our friends. We didn't equate every movement and moment with caloric output and concern ourselves with the latest fad diet. Although, I remember my mom and dad going on the Atkins diet in the 60's. When Mom and dad went on this diet I was subjected to the same diet. It was Awful. Then there was the Grapefruit Diet another bad idea, what kid wants to eat "bitter" fruit for breakfast? Thank you for indulging me, Always Debra

I even though I grew up in the early 90's I did and do very much of the same things that you have just described. I feel like many of my class mates missed out on their childhood spent inside. I was almost never found in front of the TV as a child and I still almost never watch TV. The time the I have spent in playing outside and in the outdoors are priceless and I will never regret how I spent my childhood and how I choose to live now.
Hey Kody and Debra, I grew up in the 60s too. We did spend much more time outside riding bikes, walking, playing ball and playing in the park. We never thought of it as exercise. I don't remember many fat kids. My family wasn't fat either. I can't remember my parents dieting. Food just wasn't such a big issue. We always ate dinner together at home. It was expensive back then for a family to eat out so we only did it on special occasions. One of the reasons families eat at McDonald's today is because its a cheap way to feed a family. I feel fortunate that I started running years ago when I thought it would be fun. It still is. Therefore, I never really had a weight problem.
Kody, I just wanted to say, I think you are right, many of your classmates did miss out spending their childhood inside. Years after my own children grew up, my step children came to live with us. It drove me crazy that they never wanted to play outside. It seems all they wanted to do was play video games. I think they missed out. Even today as adults they don't spend a lot of time outside.
Debra it might be a good idea to have your bone density checked, as high protien diets during adolecence and growing is harmful to children. The body needs enzymes excreated from fruits and vegitables to break down the protiens we consume, when on a high protien high fat diet with limited carbs (like Adkins) our bodies are unable to digest many of the protiens and fat we consume and in turn turn these excesses into body fat. Furthermore it deplets our body of trace minerals needed for optimium growth (for growing children) and health.
I have been on a modified Adkins diet for years. In 1983 I lost a portion of my pancreas due to a ruptured appendix. I was insulin dependent until 1984 when my doctor placed me on an Adkin type diet and I have done this diet every since. From taking nutrition I have learned how I have robbed my body of necessary nutrients, particularly while I was pregnant and nursing (just one more thing to feel guilty about).
Anyway, I believe the old saying, moderation is important while maintaining an active lifestyle.
Have a wonderful break everyone!
