Interview with Matt Wolcott
Coach Wolcott is the head football coach as well as the PE/Health teacher at La Grande High School.
What skills are required on a day to day basis?
Working hard, being prompt is very important for a teacher, Matt indicated. Staying organized and preparation are key in having an impact on the lives of young people in schools. One skill that my day to day job requires more than any is being professional, when you are around some kids all day it sometimes becomes a challenge to maintain ones sense of professionalism at times, though Mr. Wolcott explained that this is common among PE/Health teachers because the courses which he offers are most often taken as electives among students.
What is the background of your superiors?
The administrators in the La Grande school district most likely have had experience teaching prior to taking a position as a principal, for example. Normally teachers who wish to step up into these positions leave and complete their doctorate education after having experience in the school system for some years. One must make the distinction between teaching and administration, in the PE/Health dept. I am the superior; however, at a college or university a sociology professor may not be the dept chair or faculty representative. These patterns in a work place are important parts to pay close attention to.
How well do you think I would fit in this profession?
Matt
stated that from his experience of coaching me at Eastern on the football team,
he knows how hard of a worker I am. As a
teacher Matt recommended that I gain more experience with high school kids,
whether it be through coaching, teaching, volunteering, et cetera. This experience will help you to determine if
this career is the best choice for you future.
I think you are on your way, since you will be receiving your MAT soon.

A few summers ago I had a masters class with Matt. At that time he was wrestling coach, so he's experienced head coaching in a few different sports. We had some fun in that class.
