Interview a Coach

The coach that I interviewed was my one of my favorite coaches this guy to me is what I believe a coach should be like he is posed responsible, respectable, organized, manageable, understanding, He is a good motivator, and he puts his players first.  This guy is Coach Mike Peters of Miami Beach Florida.

Lee Louimeus: So Coach Mike how long have you’ve been coaching and why did you become a coach?

Coach Mike: Well I started Coaching while I was in college during the summer it was just voluntary but I loved it that much, when I was done with college I became a Physical Education teacher and became a full time coach. But between college and after college I would say I’ve been a Football/ Track coach for about 23 years.  I join coaching because I felt that there was a need for me to do something for my community and myself I wanted to make a difference in young people’s lives and I felt that by me loving to coach and teach young people this was a great opportunity for me, I surly love coaching it is a passion of my I truly cannot describe.

Lee Louimeus: What makes a coach?

Coach Mike: First of all before you become a coach make sure you truly love kids and what to help kids become responsible, respectful, mature adults. You must be understanding and patient and you must truly evaluate what coaching means to you and why do you what to coach. Also while coaching a coach has to understand a player's weaknesses and strengths. They need to know the sport and the athletes well enough to make good choices for the athlete, because over all we are primary there to help mold them into good adults. Ultimately Great coaches know how to communicate with players in a way that gets results on the playing field. The goal of great coaching is to guide, inspire and empower an athlete to realize and develop his or her full potential.

Lee Louimeus: How Do you feel about wiining and losing?

Coach Mike: Every one what’s to win that’s what you were hired to do but one must keep in mind that winning it’s everything these kids future is. The primary goal for everyone should be the development of every athlete physically and mentally.

Lee Louimeus: How do you come about to motivate your athletes?

Coach Mike: A successful coach is a motivator with a positive attitude and enthusiasm for the game and the players. The ability to motivate and inspire is part of the formula for success. Getting athletes to believe in themselves and achieve is something that can be a challenge for some young coach as yourself but you will soon have your own technique in coaching and how you what to motivate your players. Also you must keep in mind that Motivation is ultimately keeping the practices fun, fresh and challenging. When motivating a player, a good coach stresses trying to reach performance goals, not outcome goals. A coach should make sure that players understand that you can completely control your own effort and training, but can't control what your opponent does or the outcome of every match

Lee Louimeus: Is being good listener important. And do you ever regret giving all of your time to your athletes?

Coach Mike: Part of communicating effectively is listening. A coach should have a compassionate ear and should welcome the players comments, questions and input. I do not regret every helping a child, but when I first started coaching I did not know how to manage my time so I was taking a lot of home time away from my family, my one advice to you is to manage your time effectively between coaching and family time, and everything will be o.k.
