Badminton Skill Test
Badminton Skill Test
Grade Level(s): Secondary
Purpose: To build hand and eye coordination with the raquet and improve the skills necessary for the game of Badminton. This Self-Skill test also allows participants to determine how accurate they can hit the birdie and the duration of time they can keep the birdie in play.
Materials: Tape, Smooth wall, stop watch to record time, materials to keep score.
Procedure: The students will have 15 seconds to practice prior to this self test assessment. The duration of the test is three thirty second trials. Students will line up behind the starting line and then put the birdie in to play while staying within the restraining box that is taped on the floor. The objective is to keep the birdie in the air while hitting it above the tape mark on the wall (which represents where the net would be). Each time the birdie is successfully hit above the net, the participant should give him/herself a point. The participants goal is to attempt to earn as many points as possible. If the birdie touches the floor then a point is not issued and the participant is required to start at the beginning again (behind the starting line). Also, if the participant goes out of bounds, no points are gained. This skills test works on hand eye coordination, agility, foot work, the serve and grip.

This is a good skills test. I have a few questions, what is considered "too high"? The students and other persons giving the test should be aware of the standard. Also, if they go out of bounds, or the birdie hits the ground, do they loose points? When they start over is it from the beginning when they had no points? And lastly, what is considered a "good" grade. How will the student know they reached a satisfactory number of points?
Good point Grace. There actually is no "too high" in Badminton (unless you hit the ceiling), so I made that correction to the skill test and took that part out of the description. Regarding if the birdie is hit out of bounds or hits the ground, they do NOT lose points. There is no way to lose points in this game, just to gain points. What is considered a "good" grade on this skill test is different for each person. There are no standard amount of times that the birdie should be hit for each person. Success should be measured by each students progression, by whether or not they improved the amount of times they could successfully hit the birdie during each trial. This is why there are three trials (rounds). The scoring method of this skill test encourages students to set goals for themselves, to try to aim for a higher number each time!
