Practice Plan for Youth Basketball
Practice plan for beginning youth basketball:
Stretches for 5 min- Begin practice with various stretches. This is important for any age.
Warm up jog 5 min- Warm up by jogging around the court.
Practice Lay-ups for 15 min- Create two lines. One line will dribble to the basket with his right hand and lay the ball up with his right hand. The other line will rebound the ball and pass it to the lay-up line. The rebounder will then move to the back of the lay-up line. After 7:30 minutes move the lay-up line to the left side of the court. Dribble to the hoop with your left hand and lay the ball up with your left hand. Do this exercise for 7:30 minutes.
Basic Dribbling for 15 minutes- Start by dribbling at one end of the court with right hand. Once you reach the other end of the court crossover dribble to the left hand. Begin dribble back up the court using your left.
Practice shooting for 15 minutes- Practice shooting jump shots while using proper form between 2 ft to 15 ft. Do this for 7:30 minutes and have a partner rebound the ball. After 7:30 minutes switch with partner.
Passing for 15 minutes- With a partner practice chest and bounce passes.
Full court 5 on 5 for 15 minutes- Work with players on understanding offensive and defensive schemes.
Announcements and group talk for 5 minutes - Talk about the practice and let the players be involved in the discussion.
