National PE and Sport Week

I wanted to share the activities I coordinated for "National PE and Sport Week" earlier this month. I think you could easily modify the activities to fit your own site and it would be well worth it. The link at the bottom of the page will take you to my folder at Googledocs. It contains all the flyers and information to run this week at your school. If you have any questions, please email me.

Pangrazi once said that the best thing we can do for our profession is PR. He said we should use any and every opportunity to share with our community all of the wonderful things about our program. With the budget crisis in CA and PE cuts being made left and I right, I thought this event would have a positive impact at my school. It was a HUGE success.

The first week of May is state testing week and many of my classes cancel to accomodate the testing schedule. The first week of May also is National PE and Sport Week (who knew??) So, I found myself with some time on my hands and I thought I'd use that time to make a BIG DEAL to celebrate this week.

I put together the following proposal and submitted it to my principal. He thought it was a great idea.

                                                             National PE and Sport Week

                                                                   (aka “Save My Job Week”)

Week of May 3-7

Motto:  “Move Every Body, Every Day, Every Way”

or

Meadows: No Child Left on their Behind”

Each class is assigned a team color. Classes of the same color make up a team. Every day the students wear their “Team Color.” Teams will earn Fitness Points for participation in the week’s events. Team with the most points (divided by the # of people on the team) will receive a trophy and extra 15 minutes added on to their am recess.

Activities:

·       Contests sponsored by NASPE. Guidelines in separate document (I suspect NASPE will hold some type of contest each year, but if not, you could run this as a school contest)

1.  Design a Physical Activity Calendar for NASPE’s Teacher Toolbox (created by each class) worth 50 Fitness Points

2.   “What Physical Education Means to Me” individual essay contest (gr. 1-12) worth 20 Fitness Points (These were soooo great to read. I displayed many on my PE board)

·       Governor’s Fitness Challenge – students record # of days in the month they were active for 30 + min. Goal is 3x a week or more. Calendar distributed week prior and are due 5/24. (This a program sponsored by Gov. Schwartzenegger)

·       Governators – Tues and Thurs mornings (5/4 – 5/20) 7:30am – 8:00 am. This is a before school physical activity group. We will play games and have active fun! Students will be able to mark off their 30 minutes of activity on their Governor's Challenge calendar before their school day even begins! Sign up forms go home the week prior. $10 per student. 40 students max in gr. 1-6. Money goes to PE fund for equipment.

·       Special fitness activities for all students will be available during morning recess and lunch recess (M-Th) Participation in the activities will earn the student 10 Fitness Points which will help their color team. Teacher participation is any activity is worth DOUBLE the number of student points.

Students’ hands will be stamped as validation of participation. Teachers will count # of participants after each recess and record on tally form. I will collect all forms daily and record points. Progress will be graphed on hallway poster and displayed for all to see. Activities:

AM recess:

Mon. - Hoops and Jumpropes

Tues. - Fitness Circuit

Wed. - Practice Whole School Flash Mob Dance

Thu. - Obstacle Course

Lunch Recess:

Mon. - Run 3 field laps

Tues. - Dance Party

Wed. - Mileage Club

Thu. - Practice Whole School Flash Mob Dance

·       Home Challenge - Each night, Mon – Thu, students will be asked to do a home activity. Each morning that week, teachers will tally the number of students who state (on the honor system) that they did the activity the night prior. This can be done first thing in the morning and recorded on the tally form for the day. Each activity is worth 5 Fitness Points. Teachers who participate will earn 10 points.

  •  Mon – Turn off TV and Video Games
  •  Tue – Take a 30 min walk or exercise with your family
  •  Wed – No junk food
  •   Wed - attend Family Fitness Night at Meadows (20 pts for this bonus activity)
  •  Thu – Help plan and prepare a healthy meal or walk/ride bike to school on Fri am

  •       Team Spirit – students who wear shirts of their team color (predominant color of shirt) will be awarded 5 points daily. Teachers who wear the team’s color will earn 10 Fitness Points for their team.

·       Brain Breaks – teachers will be emailed daily “energizers” aligned with their grade levels’ content standards. These classroom based physical activities can be used 1-3 times a day to give students a fun, active way to integrate physical activity with academic concepts. These quick activities may be a nice break before, between or after testing. Teachers will be awarded 15 Fitness Points a day for implementing these Brain Breaks.

·       Whole School Flash Mob Dance- a very easy dance will be taught to each class. Teachers will be given a CD of the song and a copy of the dance steps to practice with their class. They can practice the steps as a brain break or any time during the day for 15 Fitness Points. The whole school will perform the flash mob dance at a short assembly on Friday.

·       Jamba Juice – I’d like to ask this vendor to make all fruit smoothies during lunch recess on Friday. Each 8oz smoothie will cost 2.00. I will attempt to negotiate a 50/50 split of the total.  I am trying to think of other healthy vendors to invite during the week. I’m open to suggestions.

·       Friday AssemblyA short all school assembly to award the trophy to the winning class, recap the week, and perform the ALL SCHOOL Mob Flash Dance. If 6th grade’s dance is ready, they will perform there dance (I Gotta Feeling flash mob dance) for the school at this time.

·       Daily Fitness Total Totals will be posted in the hallway and morning announcements will include info and reminders about the week’s activities.

Thanks you, Prof. Sather.

This was great. I would love to use this next year. You obviously put a lot of thought and work into this. Did the honor system work for your students letting you know what they did at home? I just really love this
Great Job

Thanks, Terry. I was really pleased the way it all turned out. The feedback from parents, teachers and students was fabulous. I sent an evaluation to all the teachers the week after the event to get their input. One of the questions was about the honor system. All teachers said it was best that way. It was one less thing they had to check and since it was only worth 5 Fitness Points. One teacher made it part of her homework and wrote it on the weekly assignment sheet that goes home every night. She put a little signature box on that paper and she was happy with that, so I guess it could be up to the teacher.
The only partially negative feedback was the timing. It was testing week. Some teachers loved that it was a nice break from the rigors of testing and a few others thought it was just a little too hectic to add to this already stressful week. Never please 'em all, right. Were you able to access the folder on Googledocs?
Thanks for the compliments.
