PE class and health education combined?
After experiencing many PE classes in my past and thinking about how these classes and experiences could have been more beneficial, I was curious about something. It is know that many Physical Education classes do not educate, advise or instruct kids about healthy behaviors that incorporate health, nutrition and wellness principles. I am not saying every PE class is like this, but a majority of PE classes touch briefly on the topics listed about and really revolve around activity (which is great and essential). These activities involve stretching, fundamental games, sport education and fitness tests. These are all great for our youth of today. However, my concern is that although the majority of students love PE class because it is a time to play and have some fun with sports, there are many students that dread PE because of various reasons. In fact, many kids will do whatever they can do to get out of PE as frequently as possible. For the kids that do participate in PE, how much knowledge do they acquire about the second half of being healthy? The second half is health/wellness education and basic nutritional principles. They are practicing tons of fitness and activities each time they have PE, but physical activity is a small piece of the pie. I began thinking about how neat and effective it would be to have PE class and Health class combined. Keeping the physical activity portion of the class present but structuring it around health, wellness and nutrition education principles. For example, creating games and physical activities that incorporate health and wellness trivia. Of course not all games would work but there can be many games and activities that could be created on this premises. I just think that maybe the reason many of these kids do not see a point in participating in PE is because they don't know why they have to or why it is important. I would like to get some insight and feedback on other ideas of how more health and wellness education can be presented to the youth in school. We all know there are Health classes and PE classes. But are these really effective when looking at the child obesity rates? There has got to be an idea that is new, different and better than a Health class and PE class. I agree both are beneficial, but maybe a degree of change needs to be implemented in order to spark new excitement and enjoyment within both of these subjects. What other ideas methods can schools adopt to successfully teach both of these subjects?
