Staying Motivated
Motivation can be a challenge. We become motivated for many different reasons. Some of the catalysts are: "I want to look better, feel better, know more, be better, run further, or sit up quicker than I have in the past". Often we have an impressive start. We let everyone around us know our intentions with loud fan-fare. If it's a diet, we explain it to everyone we encounter. If it is a new sport, we explicate that too. We jump in with many expectations, but sometimes it is hard to hold the momentum. When our interest starts to wane, or life's challenges get in the way of carrying the initial drive, this is where we have to look deep inside and grab hold of something/someone to help us through the rough spell. By asking for help from co-workers, friends, fellow students or family, we can get back on track. Occassionally this will take awhile, but with determination and perserverance we can re-establish the drive that caught our spirit at the beginning of our adventure.
This semester is an example for me to share. I began the term in good physical condition. I was excited about carrying on at that level as I have decided my life's direction is a degree in Physical Activity and Health, and I need to stay fit to be an asset to the field. However, many emergencies cropped up in my world which added to my daily living. My ranch was surrounded by forest fires, and my son was extremely sick in the hospital for an extended period of time. When I had these catastophies to contend with, they took up most of my thought and my time. Something had to slip, and unfortunately it ended up being my exercise time. I hadn't realized how detrimental it was until I had to submit my fitness levels. I was appalled at how much muscle tone I had lost. My first inclination was to throw up my hands in defeat. But then I looked deep inside, and realized I am not a looser, but had a momentary setback. I found my enthusiasm. I know I am just as determined today to finish my degree as I was when I first started. By back tracking a little, and working a little harder, my motivation is back!
