Proposal Paper
Dear Board:
The game of softball is composed of offensive and defensive plays. It requires players to work on specific skills in order to be effective at fielding the ball defensively to complete the play as well as offensively being able to connect the bat to the ball for a well placed hit allowing the hitter to get on base as well as potentially scoring other runners. One of the key skills to focus on is hitting the ball and getting on base. Improving hitting skills necessitates the repetition of motion and training muscles to swing in the same manner for each at bat.
One way to ensure constant and consistent repetition drills is to put up a batting cage. Batting cages offer the maximum amount of repetitions because it eliminates some of the major problems that slow down practice. The game of softball is spread over a large field and involves hitting a ball that is anything but soft.
In a normal practice when players do drills like soft toss, hitting off live pitchers, tees, or pitching machines, and pitching practice, there has to be a great deal of room as well as shaggers to make sure no one gets hurt by a stray ball being hit. This can slow down the speed of practice as people must stand around watching instead of being actively engaged in practice themselves.
Having a cage will control where the balls go and allow for the field to be used for defensive work on fielding or base running. Players will be able to work quickly and use both machines and live pitchers to hit within the confines of the cage. They will not have to have shaggers standing around doing nothing but chatting waiting for their turns.
Without an outfield fence you have to do a lot of extra work that is not necessary because by the time you get to the ball they have made it all around the bases. It is not far because if you had a fence they would only get a base or two depending where they hit it. Each field should have a fence because that is how the field is supposed to be. When hitting a real home run, you should be able to jog around the bases not sprint them. When we do hitting it takes more time because you have to go a ways out to get the balls instead of most of them hitting the fence and being able to throw them in right away. You have to have everyone shagging which takes time out of practice where they could be working on there skills. We want our field to look like an upscale softball field with all proper equipment for the facility.
We will do fundraisers to also help with making this possible. We can do simple things like car washes as well as selling items like cookie dough, candles, or discount cards. We can also do projects like raking leaves in the community.
Another way to make money to help buy these items for the field is to sell advertising space on the fence. Different businesses in the community can buy a sign and rent space to hang on the homerun fence. They will pay annually to rent the banner sized signs posted around the field.
Having both an outfield fence and a batting cage will help us improve are game because you can do different things. Some can be hitting and others can be working on defense. All college fields have fences so if outfields want to play at the next level they need to practice and reading ball of the fence and also how far they have to throw home. High School softball is just as important as college ball so the players should have a field that they can call home and be proud of. If we get a fence I think it will change how a lot of the girls play. They will feel like a really softball team.
The figures I came up with are: the batting cage is 1228 dollars for the whole kit and plus the net that goes over the frame (batting Cage Inc). For the outfield fence I found a kit that has everything you need to build it and it is 3867.55 (Hoover Fencing Co.). When you total them up it comes to a total of $5097.55. I feel like these are two well deserved items that the school needs. They have won two state champions they deserve to be treated well because they are working hard to represent there school well and I think they should be represented as well.
