Winter 2009 PES470 Sport Management class at Eastern Oregon University

Proposal: EOU Pep Band

Here is my presentation for my proposal:

Also my written proposal:

I think EOU athletics have come a long way in building winning programs and the sky’s the limit as far as I’m concerned. I would love to see the school become a powerhouse in both academics and athletics. However, to get people to believe in your school and sports programs, I think that your campus and its student body need to exude a certain vibe. You can tell when you walk onto a campus or attend a sporting event whether or not there is strong school spirit and pride present. Read more »

Proposal Presentations - Sport Management Winter 2009

I am collecting all of the proposal presentations here, so we have an easy place to find them all. Make sure to ask questions of the presenters throughout this week.

Volunteer Service Learning

Last Monday I attended a work seminar in St. Augustine, Florida. The hotel was at the World Golf Village. It is also the site of the World Golf Hall Of Fame. During my free time, I took a visit to the two courses on site. They are the King and Bear, and the Slammer. The courses were designed by Nichlaus and Palmer. The pro shop showed me around the facilities and explained what it takes to host PGA events. Next month is my favorite sporting event of the year- the Masters. Taking the tour has helped me realize all of the preparation which goes into hosting a tourament regardless of size. If you are in sports management, there will propably come a time when a golf event will come your way.

Volunteer Service Learning

I fulfilled my service learning requirements for this class recentley at H.P. Hunnicutt stadium in Princeton WV home of the Princeton Rays, a minor league affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays. Eventhough the Ray's season hasn't begun yet, I was able to go through what a typical day or preperation for a Ray's game was like with Director of Stadium Operations, Mick Bayle. Mick explained the daily routine from preparing the facilities, field, and other miscellaneous all the way down to the daily paperwork that must be completed. We even did a complete pre-game walkthrough of what step would take place at what point in the game day, who completes it, and the general timetables for completion. Read more »

I made three statements. 1.Alabama's stadium capacity will increase from 92,138 to over 101,000 after the renovation to the south endzone in 2010. 2.Coach Nick Saban is now in his third year- not his second 3.Prior to 2004, Alabama played many of their home games in Birmingham- not always Tuscaloosa I chose this site because I attend most of their home games

Proposal Presentation

ARE YOU READY TO BECOME AN ATHLETIC DIRECTOR?                                                                                   Our school is a member of the second largest Division I conference. Since 1972 the university's budget has consistently been in a deficit. It was the year Congress passed the Education Amendment Act. Title IX was a piece of that landmark legislation. The school has had legal problems involving Title IX as well. The board of directors has requested the president to initiate a study. The athletic department has received a letter from the president asking for information on what Title IX involves and its financial impact. The athletic director feels the board of directors will not approve of decisions he has made concerning Title IX and the football program. Read more »

This was not so much of an edit as it was an addition. There was very little information about the stadium. I added the information of the stadium also being home to Princeton's middle and highschool baseball teams as well as information about the stadium's renovation in 1999. I remember this well because it was my freshmen year of baseball in which we played every game on the road due to the construction. I added this information to give a little more substance and updates to the original entry.

Proposal Presentations

Within the next two weeks, you should all have your proposals ready to present. These need to be presented in time for other classmates to ask questions about your proposal. As I mentioned earlier in the term, you will need a written proposal that you will submit as a "Paper" using the link to the right. I have not seen many drafts being worked on yet, so I am assuming you are keeping some of your own drafts saved and will be working on these here on our site soon. Use the "create paper" link to get these started. They are not visible to the group until you are ready and you check the publish box to show your paper to the group. You should do this when you also have your presentation ready. Read more »

Administrative Interview

I recently went with my nephew and brother-in-law to register for baseball. A few of the coaches said that the number of players were down this year. I saw Mike Davis who has been the youth sports director for fourteen years and asked him if he had time for my interview project. My questions were geared toward youth sports in general, not only baseball.

Question: What age levels do your programs administer to?

Answer: We offer programs for boys and girls from age four to high school seniors.

Question: Which sports have you seen the largest increases in participation?

Answer: Over the last ten years soccer has really increased in numbers. In the last two seasons, lacrosse is becoming real popular.

Question: Which sports have participation been decreasing in? Read more »

Proposal Paper

Dear Board:
The game of softball is composed of offensive and defensive plays. It requires players to work on specific skills in order to be effective at fielding the ball defensively to complete the play as well as offensively being able to connect the bat to the ball for a well placed hit allowing the hitter to get on base as well as potentially scoring other runners. One of the key skills to focus on is hitting the ball and getting on base. Improving hitting skills necessitates the repetition of motion and training muscles to swing in the same manner for each at bat. Read more »
