Pangrazi, R. 2007. Dynamic Physical Education for Elementary School Children. San Francisco: Pearson.
Throwing
Stage One
-2-3 years old
-Restricted arm movement from rear toward the front of body
-Feet are stationary
-Little trunk rotation
-Force originates from flexing hip, move shoulder forward and extend at elbow
-See video: http://pevideo.org/node/714
http://pevideo.org/node/715
Stage Two
-3-5 years old
-Some rotary motion is developed to increase force
-Lateral fling of the arm, with rotation in trunk
-Imitates a discus throw
-See video: http://pevideo.org/node/716
http://pevideo.org/node/717
Stage Three
-5-6 years old
-Body facing target, feet parallel, body erect
-Rotation and shifting of the body as a step is made towards the target with the foot that is on the same side as the throwing arm
-Many people do not progress beyond this point
-SEE VIDEO: SIDE VIEW: http://pevideo.org/node/719
FRONT VIEW: http://pevideo.org/node/720
Stage Four
-Contra lateral step
-Use opposition in order to develop max body torque
-Target is addressed with non-throwing side
-Step, turn, throw
-Lead with elbow, forearm extension, snap wrist
-SEE VIDEO: SIDE VIEW:http://pevideo.org/node/721
FRONT VIEW:http://pevideo.org/node/722
Teach the "T" formation
Catching
Stage One
-Both arms in front of body, elbows extended, palms up
-Elbows bend on contact to bring ball to body
-Trapping motion
-Head is turned away, eyes are closed
-SEE VIDEO: SIDE VIEW: http://pevideo.org/node/723
FRONT VIEW: http://pevideo.org/node/724
Stage Two
-Elements same as stage one except that there is an anticipatory movement made towards the ball
-SEE VIDEO: FRONT VIEW: http://pevideo.org/node/725
Stage Three
-Preparation
*lifting arms and bending them slightly
-Chest is used as a backstop
-Contact is made with hands fist, then object is guided to the chest
-SEE VIDEO: SIDE VIEW: http://pevideo.org/node/726
FRONT VIEW: http://pevideo.org/node/729
Stage Four
-9 years old
-Catching with hands
-Give with arms to absorb the force
-Legs bent
-Tracking ball
-SEE VIDEO: FRONT VIEW: http://pevideo.org/node/727
SIDE VIEW: http://pevideo.org/node/728
Stress Points
-Maintain visual contact with object
-Reach for projectile and absorbe the force
-Feet in stride position rather than straddle
-Place body in line with object
Kicking
Stage One
-Stationary body
-Kicking foot flexed in preparation for kick
-Kicking motion with single straight leg and with no flex at knee
-Little arm and trunk movement
-Complete focus on ball
-SEE VIDEO: FRONT VIEW: http://pevideo.org/node/730
SIDE VIEW: http://pevideo.org/node/731
Stage Two
-Kicking foot is lifted backwards with a bend at the knee
-Opposition of limbs
-More follow through motion with kicking foot
-SEE VIDEO: SIDE VIEW: http://pevideo.org/node/732
FRONT VIEW: http://pevideo.org/node/733
Stage Three
-Movement towards object
-Increase in distance the leg is moved
-Upper body movement is used to counterbalance the leg movement
- SEE VIDEO: SIDE VIEW: http://pevideo.org/node/734
FRONT VIEW: http://www.pevideo.org/node/735
Stage Four
-Extension of hip to increase range of motion (ROM)
-Run to ball with a small leap to bring kicking foot into position
-Kicking foot carries forward as the trunk leans backwards
-Small step forwards on support foot to regain balance
-SEE VIDEO: SIDE VIEW: http://www.pevideo.org/node/735
FRONT VIEW: http://www.pevideo.org/node/737
Stress Points
-Step forward with non-kicking leg
-Stand behind and slightly to the side of ball
-Approach from angle
-Eyes kept on ball, head down
-Arms move in opposition with legs
Striking
Stage One
-Feet stationary, trunk faces object
-Elbow fully flexed, force generated by extending the flexed joints in a downward plane
-Little force is generated by the body
-Force comes from the arms and wrists
-SEE VIDEO: SIDE VIEW: http://www.pevideo.org/node/738
FRONT VIEW:http://www.pevideo.org/node/739
Stage Two
-Upper body generates force
-Trunk tured to side in anticipation of object
-Weight shifts from rear foot to forward foot prior to contact
-Trunk and hips rotate into the object
-SEE VIDEO: SIDE VIEW: http://www.pevideo.org/node/740
FRONT VIEW: http://www.pevideo.org/node/742
Stage Three
-Stands sideways
-Arms extend in long horizontal arc
-Swing through full range of motion
-Weight transferred from rear to front plane
-SEE VIDEO: SIDE VIEW: http://www.pevideo.org/node/743
FRONT VIEW: http://www.pevideo.org/node/744
Stress Points
-Track ball as soon as possible
-Grip bat with hands together
-Elbows away from body
-Swing bat in horizontal plane
