Health Over Appearance

The following is an article I came across recently on the web, although the article is a couple years old I think the topic is just as relevant now, if not more so:

I think this is an important topic for everyone, but especially young women given the social pressures of looking a certain way. As our book states, "Hereditary factors play a big role, and only a small fraction of the population has the genes for a perfect body" (pg 131). A "perfect body" in this case being the unrealistic view that people have in their minds of what they should look like. These unrealistic goals are what ultimately discourage people to quit healthy activities such as a proper diet and exercise, because even if they do reduce body fat they still fall short of their unrealistic goal of looking like Jessica Alba, Jennifer Aniston, or Halle Berry.

After all, shouldn't moderate body fat with a healthy cardiovascular system be more sought after than genes that easily allow for a low body fat percentage even if you get winded walking up a few stairs? A long-term outlook needs to be taken, because even if a "perfect body" is desired now eventually a longer healthy life will be more important. Unfortunately, it doesn't work both ways, longevity is achieved through a life of healthy living.

I think we should all take the time to instill the values of health over appearance into today's youth with the hopes of a better and healthy future.
