I think this article highlights an excellent concept that I have emphasized with my daughter and even with many of my friends who have an unhealthy lifestyle. Who cares if you're a little rounder than average, weigh more than is recommended for your height and body type, or don't have the hips or stomach you dream of? If you focus on those things as motivation to try to change your nutrition and exercise habits, you're bound to fail. I've watched two girlfriends this year quit new regimens that were altering their body composition from fat to muscle, but because they weren't really losing much net weight, they felt like failures and quit. I agree that the health benefits need to be the primary focus in education and advertisement with superficial benefits of looks and pounds being second to all that. With a proper nutrition and exercise program, those things will come with it anyway!
I think it's great that you emphasize this with your daughter. The simple fact is we're all different and no matter how hard a person works they may never look like their role model, but healthy living is there for the taking.
