My Proposal
My Proposal
I play a lot of Frisbee Golf and at EOU we only have a 9 holes course. My proposal is to add onto the EOU Frisbee golf course in La Grande, OR. With an additional 9 holes it would make it into a traditional 18 hole course attracting more players as some of the bigger 18 hole courses do.
Frisbee golf is a fun, inexpensive, healthy and friendly game that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities. It is much like traditional golf; except for hitting a ball into a hole you throw a Frisbee into an elevated metal basket. Trees, shrubs and terrain changes in and around the fairways provide challenging obstacles. The winner is to complete the course in the fewest number of throws or tosses. There are now over 2500 Frisbee golf courses throughout the U.S. It is one of the fastest growing activities in the Nation. Frisbee golf is taught by a number of P.E. teachers from schools around the USA. With a full 18 hole golf course, students are able to practice their Frisbee throwing skills they learn in school on the Frisbee golf course.
There are few activities that offer the high benefit-to-cost ratio. It has a low capital and maintenance costs, it can also be played year-round in all climates. Frisbee golf offers opportunity for socialization and relaxation while it promotes physical activity and fitness. An additional 9 holes to the EOU Frisbee golf course will provide an inexpensive form of recreation for people of all age and skill levels, as well as a more encouraging way for people to become more physically active.
Frisbee golf makes is a recreational activity that can be enjoyed without the worry of cost. The course is already free to the public and open year-round and the only equipment needed to play is a Frisbee, ranging from 12 to 28 dollars. It only takes about an hour to play 18 holes, even with groups. With the additional 9 holes adjacent to the existing course being located on the EOU campus it makes it more very accessible for the community to participate.
Frisbee golf is an environment friendly sport. Frisbee golf course does not require any alteration of the existing landscape. However, since the course is on campus the grass is mowed during the spring and summer months and the landscape is maintained year round, which actually improves the condition of the course for the players.
It is recommended to use an experienced disc golf course designer to design the course. However, since the new 9-hole course will be an addition to the existing course on campus, we will utilize the resources we already have, the students and the community. We will hold a contest for a 9 hole course design that is up to par with the PDGA regulations and then we will have the student body vote on the course design they like most. From talking with my fellow students they want the back 9 to be more challenging with some longer holes, having a couple of par 4’s and par 5’s.
In addition to the course design contest we will be hosting several tournaments throughout the school year. A website will be made to offer more exposure and information what’s happening. Flyers will also be posted up around town and advertisements put in the newspaper and on the radio can increase awareness of community.
A Frisbee golf tournament will be held on the existing EOU Frisbee golf course. The tournament will have entry fees that will go towards financing the new course. There will be a traditional individual play tournament, as well as a scramble tournament. Prizes will be given to the winners. Prizes will be certain donations given from different companies that are willing donate.
Finances cost are golf targets, tee boxes, signs per hole, bark, concrete and posts for each tee box.
Golf Targets: $2800
Signs: $1600
Concrete: $200
Bark: $100
Posts: $200
Total Cost: $4900
These cost can vary depending on if we can get some of it donated.
Volunteer and the grounds crew for the college, will make sure the course is up to par and no damage is done when installing. Each hole will be laid out and measured according to the plan of the course design. Disc targets will be placed into the ground 2 feet and cemented for added stability. Tee boxes are created with the posts and bark chips. The tee boxes should be made into a square of 4 ft. Bark will be 2 inches deep within the tee box. signs will placed at the beginning of each hole next to the tee box, listing the par of the hole and showing a map of the hole.
By adding 9-holes to the EOU Frisbee golf course will make it for an inexpensive enjoyable upgrade to the existing course. By involving the student body in the design, this increased awareness and will encourage more people to participate in playing the course. Having a full 18-hole Frisbee golf course will attract more players and it will be a plus feature for the school and community.
