Nutrition for Athletes
Every coach has concerns about the nutritional habits of their athletes, especially females. Our state web page provides example of good habits for athletes, pregame. I often stress nutrition to our athletes, maybe the health/science background again, but feel it is so very important. The link follows:

I agree that nutrition is extemely important. I especially focus on advanced hydration with my players due to the heat and humidity in Florida. It is hard to convince teenagers that fast food and energy drinks are to be avoided though.

Nutrtion is something you hear about coming out of the mouths of my coaches all the time, for me its been about learning how to eat right all over again.
But this brings up a question, how do you get kids to eat correctly in the world that gives you bad food at your finger tips?
One thing that worked well with my cheerleaders, was to actually provide them with a list of healthy food/snacks that appealed to them. We had a snack schedule where girls alternated in bringing healthy snacks from the list for a before/after practice snack. I did the same for away game bus rides. I believe this worked in part because I modeled a healthy lifestyle and discussed the personal benefits of good nutrition throughout the season.
Also, my own teenage daughter recently told me she has noticed she feels better and has more energy when she eats more fruits and vegetables and stays away from heavy, greasy foods. She has become a pescatarian and I am having fun accomodating her new diet (I still enjoy meat). Perhaps doing an experiment of with one's team where they paid attention to how they felt after eating certain foods may spur some dietary modifications... I think it's important that athletes are aware of how their choices determine how their bodies feel.
I agree with Ryan's focus on hydration. The first routine I set up for my PE classes is having my students take a 5-10 sec. drink before we head out to the field. All of my kids know why it's important to drink 8-12 glasses of water every day. I also model this by drinking from my water bottle while they're at the fountain. When I coach, I have bottled water donated from our local water company on hand at practices/games and ensure they drink it.
I agree with you all that nutrition is very important. I to stress the importance of drinking enough water, and another thing to teach our players is what types of food to avoid on game days or before practice and how long before those activities they should eat. Some players truly think they should either something larger directly before playing... and it's important they understand nutrition in order to best the best they can be at their sport and live a healthy lifestyle.
This new joint position statement titled "Nutrition and Athletic Performance" by the American Dietetic Association (ADA), Dietitians of Canada (DC), and American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) is a very important one:

What a great detailed, informative article on the nutritional needs for optimum athletic performance. There are many great points made here that should be shared with our student athletes to avoid some of the common misconceptions among teenage athletes in particular.
A point made in this article that motivates me to engage in regular aerobic training, is that our bodies pull greater fuel from stored fat as we become more aerobically conditioned. It's also interesting that the article discourages daily weigh-ins.
Keep in mind that that journal link I included is more than just an article. It is a joint position statement by the leading authorities on this subject. These are the "heavy hitters:" ACSM, ADA, and DC. It reflects the current knowledge of research on the subject. You really can't get a more credible statement than that anywhere. The position may be different as research develops in the upcoming years, but for now it reflects our current knowledge.
I will bookmark this journal link for future reference on this topic. Your point is well-made!
Great information, I bookmarked it as well which led me to the question, how long will we have access to the information on this unicommons site. I would like to go back and copy a lot of the great ideas and work we've shared this semester. To me, the experience has been extremely valuable and I will be taking many of the new ideas and thought processes with me. Much thanks to eveyone.
My intention is to leave you work here available for quite some time. In other words, you will have access to your account and your work indefinitely. After all, it is your work. You can even updating it if you want. I foresee archiving or deprecating work at some point when it becomes stale or not as relevant in the future. In any regard, you'll still have access to the information you created any time you log in and view the work you have authored.
