Rejuvenating Your Majors' Club

Project Purpose: Re-form the physical activity and health majors' club at Eastern Oregon University. The club should include both on-campus and online students, since there are a substantial number of majors in both venues.

Background: The physical education majors club existed in the past, and still exists on paper today. In the 1990s, the club was active at sporting events to raise money for their functions. They served a major role as the "Quinn Crazies" and collected money in fundraising efforts at the games. The club eventually diminished and is currently inactive.  Read more »

BODIES- THE EXHIBITION

When I was back home in Seattle over the Thanksgiving holiday I went with my family to visit the Bodies exhibition which features actual human specimens allowing people access to sights and knowledge normally reserved for medical professionals. For me it was an interesting and eye opening experience as I never really realized how complex and amazing the human body is. Every specimen was unique as it featured a different part of the human body from the muscle and skeletal system, to the digestive and reproduction systems, to the more complex bodily functions such as the nervous system and more. Additionally throughout the exhibition were a number of fun facts about the human body, these included:

- A human being loses an average of 40 to 100 strands of hair a day. Read more »

Peer reviewed research article

This was a very interesting piece on fractures that are caused by the loss of bone density. Osteoporosis is common in woman, especially when they reach menopause, but this piece focuses on men. The research was published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal and looks at the effects of bone loss specifially in males.

Every fight is not violent

In earlier weeks we were tasked with embedding a video and sharing it. Many students choose videos with persons doing exercises or demonstrating how to preform exercises or use equipment properly. As for i choose to embed a clip of a fight scene from the movie "The protector" obtained from YouTube starring the actor Tony Jaa.  I would first like to apologize to anyone that was offended by the post for that was not my intention at all. secondly i would like to defend myself and my choice because i was told it was an inappropriate video due to the violence it depicting. Muscle Confusion- Is there such thing?

Tony Horton's popular and intense P90X workout program is intented to transform your body in 90 days using a technique called muscle confusion based on generally sound nutritional science and a workout regimen that focuses on cardio and strength training. By working different muscle groups in such rapid concession, this supposedly allows your muscles to grow and apapt quickly without ever reaching the "plateau effect". Is there any truth behind this, or is it simply the intensity and deticating one's self to the hour or more P90X workouts six times a week that make this program effective. I'd love to hear any thoughts about the topic. Read more »

The concentration of my degree is exercise science.  I was wondering what i could do and be with my degree.  I found a pdf file that explained all of the careers that are associated with exercise science and sports medicine.  I did not realize how many careers there are.

CranioSacral Therapy (Great for Physical Therapists!)

For those of you who are interested (if you get to see this), there is a great therapy that isn't very well known yet.  It is called CranioSacral Therapy and helps the body heal with gentle manipulation of fascia.  You can read more about it and find classes at http://upledger.com/content.asp?id=26.  It's an especially good added skill for physical therapists! School of sport and health sciences

I have attached the URL for the University of Exeter School of Sport and Health Sciences.  They offer a MSc in pediatric exercise physiology.  The only major disadvantage is that they are located in the United Kingdom.  They also offer a wonderful undergraduate degree in Psychology with Sport and Exercise Science.
