We have been discussing this issue for the last couple days in class at EOU in La Grande. Here, I'm opening it up for discussion before we proceed.

PROBLEM

There is a need for a good overview timeline for the history of sport and history of physical education.

SOLVING THE PROBLEM

First, we need to see if anything already exists that solves this problem. Then, if there is a need or we think we can do a better timeline, then we should go about coming up with our own timeline.

In the mean time, I'm going to start working on a way we can put together timelines on this site.

Please add input on the document using the "edit" button. Discussion can take place here with "comments." Then, we'll proceed with this project.

I like the idea of comming up with our own time line. I'm sure that there probably already is one somewhere but I think that it would be neat to set up our own! Then we can look at what everyone else has posted and research subjects/sports that we don't know much about. If we are going to do a timeline, I'm not completely sure of how to access that. I have some information but am not sure how or if we are supposed to post it yet.

I did find this timeline:

http://www.historyworld.net/timesearch/defaul...

It is quite long; and has everthing from board games to sports.

Here is another timeline. I am not sure if this was what you are looking for. This timeline seems to be more organized, and easy to move around.

Thanks for finding these. I figured there would already be some good examples of what I was looking for. The first one more in line with what I was thinking. We need to examine these in more detail to see how comprehensive they are, who maintains them, accuracy, etc. Can you ad these links to the document so we have them there as we progress the project along.

We may decide we need to focus on a timeline just for physical education if other sources are good enough. Let's keep looking and examining these sources in detail.

Unfortunately, it is not your computer but some settings that I do not have control over. I'll delete those posts extra posts for you.

Also, please enter your link directly in the document using the "edit" tab at the top.

I think competition between men has always exsisted. When orgainiation occurs with rules and regulations is when it evolves into sport. I believe sport goes back beyond ancient Greece. Here is the link to the Chinese Olympic commitee. There is some interesting timelines regarding this subject.

How can we start to post events on the timeline? Right now i´m focusing more on international events since it is the topic i find to have a little more knowledge on. Thank you

I also need some direction on how to add events to the timeline.

We have no timeline set up yet. We're at the stage of deciding if we even need one. I still see no contribution to the document we're working on. Links should be added there so we know what we're working with. Until this is ready and we have a direct, we won't be starting a timeline. Some evaluation of the credibility or accuracy of the sources should also be examined too.

Like I said before...I think coming up with a timeline would be a fun and positive experience.

Here is a timeline that I came across that I found quite intriguing. Take a look...

I was thinking that when we do the timeline we could stick with doing the united states part, along with just the world, but when it comes to local maybe doing the history of oregon rather than just our local town of La Grande. I don't know though its just an idea?

I found this timeline while I was searching online.

http://www.worldlingo.com/ma/enwiki/en/Sports...

It goes through a timeline by decades since around 1850; However it does not include much from before than. I am not sure if I see it as the most reliable source, but it is another option to look at.

I found the history-timeline as I was looking as well. (the link has been posted above already) I do like how it is set up by sport or activity; therefore if you're interested in a specific sports timeline it's easy to navigate. For example, soccer is my main sport interest and I can look just at the soccer history timeline which I like.

Where is the edit tab to edit the timeline document?

ooops

I enjoyed looking at those two different timelines. I like how historyworld's timeline is formatted in the traditional way and provides really fascinating information, like when gladiators wore metal studs on their boxing gloves and fought to the death. I like how you can choose between past and present, and between events and people on the timeline index...very organized, makes it easy to find something specific.

Here is a pretty good website on the history of women in sports
http://www.northnet.org/stlawrenceaauw/timeli...

Here is an entire organization dedicated to sport hisory. Their purpose is: the North American Society for Sport History is to promote, stimulate, and encourage study and research and writing of the history of sport; to support and cooperate with local, national, and international organizations having the same purposes.
I can't get into the documents because you must be a member. Don't know if they would make an exception for us, I bet they could have some great resources for us on this project.

I will try this again. This should work.

I like the women in sport idea so I added this as a checkbox possibility, so the results can be sorted to women only.

I've got a first draft of the entry form up. However, I need feedback before we begin entering events. Take a look at the link below and click the "Add new entry"

Then, provide feedback. Feel free to enter some sample entries just for testing. I have a sample Title IX entry there right now. You can try editing that one too.
