Lewis' Normal Institute of Physical Education was the first attempt to prepare physical education teachers of the U.S.  The first course ran for a period of 10 weeks and also involved a type of student teaching where each student had the opportunity to lead a small class.  During the seven years of it existence, the institution graduated 421 men and women.
