Elements of a Good Fitness Test (with Audio)

The following characteristics are important for a good fitness testing program:

  • Reproducibility: Make sure the test can be repeated periodically with most variables the same. For example, a test on a 400 meter track is better than trail or road.
  • Specificity: The test should measure performance that characterizes the target activity, both in intensity and type of activity. For example, when the training for a marathon a good test will be running for endurance. In this case, a 1.5 mile run may not be a good indicator.
  • Standardized: Using a test that has established norms allows for comparison with others. Even if norms do not exist, there are standard distances that often allow for performance comparisons from published race results (e.g. 40k time trial in cycling, 10k run, 1000m row). However, reproducibility is more important for personal comparisons.
  • Diversified: Use several different tests to give a more complete picture. Tests should also be done on tertiary fitness components. For example, test all health-fitness related components of cardiovascular, flexibility, muscular strength, and body composition.
