The Quintessential Physical Activity & Health Student

Characteristics of the quintessential student major in physical activity & health

  1. Relishes the challenge of education: The coursework required in physical activity and health is challenging, and this challenge is welcomed by student major. In general education classes, the physical activity and health student enjoys outperforming students from other “hard” majors. This is also part of exhibiting profession pride (see #3 below).
  2. Never misses class: Education is expensive, but the knowledge obtained is substantially more valuable. Failing to participate in class is a waste of money—either the student is wasting money by not participating in what they paid for or the instructor is wasting student’s money by not improving students’ knowledge. In the latter case, the student should challenge the instructor or provide meaningful feedback to help improve instruction. Students should invest time in education, because the return on investment is great. Seemingly insignificant decisions to miss class end up being million dollar decisions in the long run (e.g. entrance to graduate school, higher paying jobs with increase competence, better decision making aptitude).
  3. Exhibits professional pride: Many “PE Majors” suffer from an inferiority complex of their own making. When people ask what their major is, a sheepish answer ensues. There are very few reasons not to be confident in the physical activity and health profession. In reality, people are probably jealous that you have a fun job where you get paid for what you do.
  4. Constantly asks good questions: The content provided in classes should conjure up some questions. Be ready to ask these questions or make comments in class. If you don’t have questions, then the information needs to be studied in more detail until questions arise.
  5. Successfully balances a variety of activities: Students in physical activity are athletes, coaches, students, mothers, fathers, campus leaders, etc. The quintessential major balances all these activities through good time management and prioritizing appropriately. Furthermore, the student major takes on leadership roles in intramural activities, athletic teams, professional organizations, student organizations, and student government.
