In some physical activity and health related field, certifications are even more important than college degrees. Below are samples of some certifications:
Teaching license/certification: Requires a bachelor’s degree, passing standardized exams, students teaching, and continuing education to maintain license. Each state has specific requirements. Oregon and other states require passing specific sections of the PRAXIS and or CBEST.
Athletic training: Requires approved bachelor’s degree completion for NATA certification (ATC).
Fitness industry (e.g. health clubs): Certifications are paramount in this industry. Specific certifications can be obtained for a personal trainer, aerobics instructor, spinning instructor, etc. Many certifications exist that maintain various levels of clout within the industry. Popular certifications include ACSM, AFAA, ACE, CSCS.
Coaching: ASEP or NFHS coaching certification is required in most states. Oregon now requires NFHS. State athletic associations will have details on the requirements to coach.
