Passing Cues

 

  • Hold ball in front of body.
  • Look in direction of pass swinging hands across body.
  • Spin the ball by twisting the forward hand up and pronating forearm.
  • Support the player by running behind immediately.

 

Drop kick

 

  • Hold ball upright with one hand on each side of the ball.
  • Drop ball nose down on the ground in front of the body.
  • As the ball comes in contact with ground, strike it with instep.
  • Keep the toe pointed on follow through.

 

Place kick

 

  1. Straight on: Place ball upright. Use a straight run and kick using toe.
  2. Round-the-corner: Approach from angle and kick with instep.
  3. Torpedo: Place ball at angle pointing through the top of the goalpost.

 

Set Scrum: Occurs when play is halted unintentionally by a minor infringement of the rules, such as an unintentional off sides, knock-on, or forward pass. Explain and practice scrum. Drill: Practice the scrum.

 

  • 8 forwards form a scrum: 3 in front, 2 in second row, and one in third row. The two remaining are on the sides.
  • All forwards bind closely together and drive opponents.
  • Scrum half puts ball into tunnel between both teams. The hookers (front player) for each team try to hook the ball back through the scrum onto their side. No one can touch the ball with their hands in the scrum.
  • Locking: locking legs to keep from going backward
  • Crabbing: Side stepping to shift the scrum and keep the other team from driving.

 

Ruck: Drill: Practice a ruck with players on the ground with the ball.

 

  • When one player is tackled, one or more players for each team close around and try to drive the other team away from the ball, which lies on the ground between the players who are on the ground.
  • The ball is made available by players channeling the ball backwards with their feet.

 

Maul:

 

  • One or more players close around a player who is carrying the ball and is not taken to the ground.
  • Ends when a player with the ball breaks loose from the other players.
  • The ball may also be channeled back to teammates.
  • If a ball is not immediately made available, a scrum is called by the referee.

 

Line-out:

 

  • Occurs if ball or player carrying it touches or crosses the touchline.
  • Ball is thrown in at right angles between the forwards of both teams.
  • Both teams must allow a clear channel directly in front of ball.
  • The ball must be thrown down the middle of the two groups.
  • Players may not push charge, bind, or lift until the ball is released.

 

Tackling:

 

  • Keep low to ground with arms out.
  • Contact opponent’s waist with shoulder.
  • Drive through to bring opponent to ground.
  • Smothering: A type of tackle sometimes use to wrap around opponent to keep them from passing the ball.

 

Basic rules.

 

  • Two teams of 15 play for two periods of 40 minutes each.
  • Play is started with a kick from a tee on the halfway line and must travel 10 meters but cannot travel past the goal line. All subsequent kickoffs must be drop kicks made by the team that was scored upon.
  • Each player may catch or pick up the ball and advance it by running forward or kicking it.
  • A player may not advance forward in front of the ball.
  • Passing is allowed laterally or backwards. Deliberately knock or throw the ball forward is illegal (called a knock-on).
  • A tackled runner must immediately release the ball, the tackler must immediately release the tackled player.

 

Fouls: team penalized retreats 10 meters and the other team either takes a quick tap ball (with foot), kicking the ball into touch for their own line out, or taking a penalty kick at goal.

 

  • Striking, hacking, kicking, stomping, or tripping.
  • Dangerous tackle with a stiff arm.
  • Charge, obstruct, or grab opponent who does not have the ball.

 

Scoring

 

  • Try (5 points): A player carries ball over opposition’s goal line and touches the ball on the ground.
  • Conversion (2 points): After a try, the ball can be kicked between the posts and above crossbar from a point in line with where the try was scored.
  • Penalty goal (3 points): A penalty kick is awarded for major infringements of rules such as high tackle, dangerous play, or obstruction.
  • Drop goal (3 points): During play, a player may drop-kick the ball from anywhere on the field. If it goes through the goal posts 3 points are scored.
